Better you than me. There is no way I would use my pc for anything else while decryting or burning. Just not worth the risk of a duff disc.

I too have mainly stuck to Ritek Go4 and 5 with never any problem (except one time when I needed updated firmware for the new dye) And I have used TY's also with no problems. I feel very comfortable with either of these two medias (in terms of SL Media) and usually buy whichever I get the best deal on at the time. As for the 'off label' Riteks (e.g memorex, maxell) I have run across packages that were later ID'd as Ritek but it's hit and miss. You can just as easily end up with a 'no-name' ID brand, all depends who Memorex/Maxell (et al) bought that current shipment from.
I believe that there are different levels of 'Disc Quality' from all the disc manufacturers and when a company, like maxell, buys their media to stamp their own name on the disc, it all depends on what quality they are willing to pay for. Besides which, in manufacturing you can never get 'perfect' media 100% of the time. Heck you can't even get an exact duplicate of the materials that the disc is composed of, there's always a variance and quality control only goes so far.
-- well thats the long version of what was meant as a short post ;o)

Well, I've got to ask a couple of questions after reading all this. I have ridata 8x and a tdk burner. I've been using dvd xcopy platinum for several years, but have now switched to DVDXPlatinum with AnyDVD. Thought every thing was going well, but all of a sudden none of our dvd players will read any of the burns. I just bought the dvdxplatinum and can still get my money back under their guarantee. But, before I do that, I need to fugure out what the actual problem is, the media, the speed of the burn, or the players. My originals will play, but it is my backup that won't, and with kids, I can't trust the, so I've started making cpoies before they get their grubby paws on them. Where do I start?

hi - to be honest -- i never did like the xcopy -- i had it and worked fine for a short while and then thats it - i never liked it anyway.
i am not sure about your disks - thats the first thing you should check out - if the disks are good - i would just use dvd decryptor and dvdshrink with Nero or dvdclone 2 is what i normally use - these are free besides the dvdclone 2 - but if you look around - i am sure you can find a crack or serial :) for dvdclone 2 - i have used all kinds of disks till i finally got one kind that works for me all the time - its ridata ritek - i have a nec 2500 burner and with those disks - always comes out perfect for me - i been finding them at office depot under there brand name and i just got maxell from them with the media id ritek R03 - i burn them at maximum speed and works great - and i browse around as i do this - i rip - burn and then check it with dvdshrink to make sure it can analyze it and then dvd info pro for errors - all while i use my computer - for me - this works great -
and the dvds come out great - i dont see why anyone would waste hours using 4 different programs and then burn at 2x or even 1x i read someone does - thats crazy - i do agree that different batches of dvds can be different media id - memorex and now maxell with media id ritek
R03 work great - if you find them - buy one pack and check them out - thats what i did - they were on sale - once i see the media id and burned a few great - i went back and got 400 more -

'crack or serial' - let's not talk about that kind of stuff, keep that kind of talk for the other websites out there. We all know what these are so they don't need mentioning round here :)

That's kind of what I did. I think I have about 200 more of the disks. I believe there was a link in an afterdawn newsletter in Nov-Dec and I grabbed them. I really don't know anything about how to find out if the disks are good, and I like one program simplicity. No need to mention cracks or serials, I wouldn't know what they are. But you would recommend dvdclone2? If so, I'll get my money back on the DVDXPLATINUM and buy the other. how do I get the media id? I think I'll go read other forums, too. I understand a lot, but am really uncertain of what it all means.

hi - i am not sure if dvdclone 2 is better than the one you have now - i just didnt like xcopy and i think dvdclone 2 works very well and its very easy - but the most important is that they come out very good --
great picture and sound - from what i read on here - there may be other ways to do it that may come out better - but you would use about 4 programs and its more complicated if you ask me - i never had a issue with the results from dvdclone 2 -

All Ritek discs I've tried are junk. I had 50 free after rebate and I wouldn't even take free ones anymore.

That would put you in the minority on most of these forums. I would urge those having media problems, to try rytek first, especially go4s & go5s, and not to pay a great deal of attention to timm129.

hi - i am no expert on disks -- but i tried so many brands and the ones that always worked the best were riteck - i have used ridata riteck 4X which burned at 6X -- i have a nec2500 8X burner - and i tried the 8x which only burned at 4x ? was told a firmware upgrade would fix that - but i left my drive alone - still under warranty - but in any case they all worked great - i found them at office depot also under the office depot brand and worked great and also i use memorex and maxell with no problems - so i dont know what to make of all the talk about riteck being cheap or bad - ? for me so far so good - i have used over a 1000 of these disks -

And there, expresso is the answer. It works for you. I took the plunge a couple of months ago, and uninstalled then reflashed my three burners. I had a 530 sony, that was always solid, and never had a problem with go4, or verbatum. Two others, a Pioneer 108, and a PD generic, wouild read only. After the tune up, all three burners work as advertised, the sony being the only one in which there was no noticible improvement. By the way, I now have little problem with very inexpensive media. I just never use it for the main back up.
