I have been using DVDShrink since March with no problems. Today I went to rip a movie and I'm getting estimated time quotes at 60 hours! My times used to be 30 minutes to an hour at the most!! What has happened? The only thing I've done to my computer is reformatted my HD, used a different Windows XP and installed Office 2003. I am very layman when it comes to computers so please explain to me like you are explaining to a 3 year old.
Thanks.

Is it going over to DMA or not.Have you tried uninstalling your drivers?

It is DMA. I've tried uninstalling the drivers about 5 times, I've uninstalled DVD Shrink & Nero and reinstalled them both - still the same problem.

Check the quality settings in DVD Shrink. Any quality settings especially compress video with high quality adaptive error compensation set at max smooth or max sharp will slow shrink down a lot but will also greatly improve video quality. If it's only speed you're after uncheck everything in quality settings.

Is this just on one dvd, or all of them?
Because it could be that that disc is dirty.

It is on the last 3 DVDs I tried yesterday. I don't understand the problem either because I havent had any problem before. It worked like a champ. Like I said, the only thing I did is wiped HD, reinstalled XP, installed Office 2003 - I don't think I am running any other program that could bother DVD Shrink.
When I tried a previous movie I got a bunch of CRC errors but I checked the DMA like you said, uninstalled the drivers for the ATAPI deal and reinstalled about 5 times. Now, let me ask this. I uninstalled the drivers, rebooted computer and then windows automatically reinstalled them....should I have used my driver disk to install or just go with what windows had.

for a start i'd look im your XP 'Startup' folder and remove Office's find fast' thingy. Other than that i'd say download Nero info-tool from here - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/neroinfo.html , go to the save icon & paste it's rather lengthy system setup summary here...

In the meantime I would update DVD Shrink to latest version 3.2. Much better app with added features and better quality.

My rig slows down when my HDD is nearly full. I have to delete some movies to get my speed back. I know you said you reformatted, How big is your HDD, and how full is it? My 160GB slows when its about 75 - 80% used. Also you might try using DVD Decrypter to rip the movie to your HDD it shows you how fast your ripping. Another thing, if your DVDrom is on the same cable as the drive your writting to it can slow you down. All that said Ive never seen a disc take 60 hours.
Like mort81 said update to 3.2.
Good Luck!

Ok, here is an update - I finally got the speed part back to normal. Speed is awesome. About 30-45 minutes from start to finish but there is one problem....IT DOESNT FREEKIN BURN!! I am so distraught. I've been using this system fine without a problem for months, what the heck? It goes through the whole process like it is burning and everything...you would never know it wasnt burning until you go to watch the movie - blank DVD. Any suggestions for this one? Anyone?
BTW, I've updated DVD Shrink.

OK. First -- thanks everyone for offering suggestions. I too just recently had this problem occur. It's not TERRIBLE, I guess, but I do run into the problem that when I'm burning now -- EVERYTHING runs slower (when I have an IM pop up for example, it's almost like you can watch each letter in the message pop in -- and it wasn't doing this a few weeks ago).
I've done the following.
1. Uninstalled DVD Shrink, downloaded a new copy, and installed it.
2. I went into the Device Manager (as the second or so post recommends) and checked my IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. (I have no idea what it means, but hey, LOL. at least the directions were clear.)
3. I checked both my primary and secondary IDE Channels. I was able to reset the Primary to the DMA if available setting and it took. In the secondary IDE Channel, I'm able to select teh "DMA if available". For device 1 -- its changed its current transfer mode to Ultra DMA Mode 2. HOwever for device 0, the DMA if available setting is selected, but it never converts to Ultra. The transfer mode stays on PIO Mode. -- Long story short -- does this mean anything.
4. I'm reluctant to uninstall drivers -- I know just enough about computers to screw it up. If someone could talk me through that -- if it would help, I'd love it. (I operate on Windows XP home -- I purchased it and its installedo n the comptuer. HOwever, because I'm moving soon, the disks are packed away and I'd rather not unpack for them.
As I said, I can survive, but I'd love to have it back the good old way. ANyone out there who can ehlp again :)

Give this a try. Go into device manager and locate device 0 in DVD/CD-ROM drives and disable it. Reboot and let windows reenable it. If that doesn't work go into device manager and locate the IDE channel device 0 is on in IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and disable it. Reboot and let windows reenable it. Check to see if it has switched back to DMA.

I had ripped Hitch on my computer and about a week later i had burnt it with DVD Fab and it worked great, but now I am trying another DVD and it keeps burning blanks, it's about to drive me crazy cuz I have like 5 programs that i had been experimenting with and none of the combinations are working!!!!! I have DVD Fab, DVD Decrytor, DVD Shrink, Nero, and also the DVD Fab decrytor...I believe I put it on my computer with DVD Shrink and burned it with DVD Fab but for some reason it isn't working now......The only thing different that I noticed is that a couple of the BUP files have the internet explorer icon by them and I don't know why, but I changed them to where Power DVD Player opens them instead of the Internet Explorer...Any suggestions, any would be greatly appreciated????

@shannon81 -
you mentioned Nero there. If Nero was used for one of these burns i may be able to help. Post LAST section of Nero log which is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number whichj begins with '1A21' or similar. Nero logs show details for quite a few things, and usually that's enough to get someone burning again.
and ps which movie was it ?

Hi,
The first thing to check is hard drive space. What type of CPU and memory do you have? How big is your drive? How big are your partitions? If the drive that it is being written to is too full, you could run out of virtual memory which slows the computer way down. HP all in one printers come with a nice program that resides in memory. Problem is is that if you don't have a lot of memory, this will slow it way down as well as it takes a huge amount of memory to keep it resident. If you see it in the taskbar right click it and quit the program. If you don't see it, uncover your hidden programs on the taskbar. You can also do a "control-alt-delete" and open the task manager. This will tell you if you have any large programs running in memory. Be very careful what you turn off as some of these are required to run the system. Generally a good rule of thumb is to look for programs on the right side of the taskbar. You can close any browser except Internet Explorer. This is needed by windows. You can close all messinger programs with a right click on the icon and follow the menu that pops up.
I have a P4 3.0/800 fsb, 750 megs PC3200 DDR Ram, 16x DVD-Rom Drive, 12x Burner and a 120 meg ATA-133 hard drive. Most movies take about 35 min. total from start to finish. I usually re-author and copy only the movie (Main Title). To me the picture quality I gain by leaving out all the extras is well worth it. I just put the DVD in the DVD-Rom drive, the blank media in the burner and let it do it's thing.
Once in a while it will freeze up, usually in the analisis but occasionally while it's encoding. If that happens get yourself a copy of DVD Decrypter and put the DVD thru that first. Make note of where the program is putting the files. Chances are vey good that if it goes thru DVD Decrypter with no problem, it will work with DVD Shrink just fine. Open DVD Shrink and click on open files, select the file and handle it just as you would files off of a DVD! I like the wide screen versions as I have a very good quality 19" monitor and they look great on it. Modified letterboy looks great too!
Hope this helps!
Sincerely,
theonejrs

this problem ruined my life for like a week, and i could have sworn i found the fix for it on ad.com, weird.
anyway, if anyone with this problem has musicmatch jukebox, this is the problem. a couple of months ago musicmatch updated the program with what it called a portable device fix or something. now it takes like a month to burn dvds. literally.
the fix?
system restore my man, of course dont delete the program and then restore, just restore. look for the update, it should be the day your life started to suck.
restore, then check musicmatch's options and look for the automatic update box and uncheck. while you're at uncheck every auto-update box for every program and update manually when theres actually a big fix, i hope this helped you i wouldnt wish the headache on anyone.
