What DVD are you trying to copy? Also, try ripping it you your hard drive using DVD Decrypter, then burning it with DVD Shrink. To do this, you will need a copy of Nero.

Sony PCV-RS430G, 2.8Ghz P4 w/ HT Tech, 1GB DDR PC2400 RAM, 120GB Maxtor Internal HD, 250GB Western Digital External HD, ATI Radeon 9800 256MB All In Wonder Pro

Macintosh G4, Dual 1 Ghz, 1Gb RAM, 80GB HD, OS X Tiger and OS 9

The drive should be reading the blank disc. Explain exactly what you are doing and then someone can help.

just to clarify DVD Shrink uses Nero as an external burning software being that DVD Shrink does not have one of its own. you only need to use shrink if you are trying to backup a dvd with all the extras. The movie alone most times can be copied from your harddrive once its ripped is not bigger than a standard 4.7g dvd (please note 4.3g is about the size of the movie file you want to stay around). You can also try the combo of DVD Decrypter along with DVD43 and see if it rips your movie. Have you updated the firmware on your hp burner? http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDname=hp+640i&cdrs=&cdr... take a look at the link regarding your burner.

TDK blank disks
look at the second link in my signature and that should help you in deciding if your media is crap (i.e. cmc mag). Also your burner not recognizing your blank dvd could be a firmware issue. Hope this helps you get on the road to being a happy burner. Report back and let us know if you got it sorted out and once again welcome to AD.

@matt72

thanks for clarifying that, as i never knew it. i have only burned movies with all the features and what not. i agree, it really does sound like it could be a firmware update, but isnt the HP 640i a relatively new burner? correct me if im wrong, but it really shouldnt have a major firmware update already.

thanks agian

true it is one of the newer lightscribe (I think) dvd writers on the market. As far as the burner itself and firmware updates it may or may not have been tested with relatively known blank dvd media such as sony, verbatim and taiyo yuden as most folks who are burning enthusiasts use those. TDK is 'new' to the dvd media field but is a recognized as a media conglomerate from the cdr field.
TDK DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
TDK DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
TDK DVD+R 8x (CMC MAG.E01)
TDK DVD+R 8x (RICOHJPN R02)
TDK DVD+RW 2.4x (MCC.....A01)
TDK DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPNW11)
TDK DVD-R 2x (MCC 00RG200)
TDK DVD-R 2x (MXL RG01....)
TDK DVD-R 2x (RITEKG04....)
TDK DVD-R 2x (TDKG02000000)
TDK DVD-R 4x (TTG01.......)
TDK DVD-R 4x (TYG01.......)
TDK DVD-R 4x Scratch-Proof (TTG01)
TDK DVD-R 8x (TTG02)
TDK DVD-R 8x (TTH01)
TDK DVD-RW 2x (TDK502sakuM3)
TDK DVD-RW 2x Scratch-Proof (TDK502sakuM3

The above is some of the media codes you will find on TDK blank dvd media. cmc mag is basically at the bottom of the list of good/ decent media and are considered crap for the most part by most AD members as well as myself.

But back to your question even if there is no major firmware update if forto is using 1 of the above TDK with the cmc mag media code they may burn and seem great (if he gets it to work) but all in all they are known for errors such as pixellation, skipping and freezing after a few uses. Hope I gave you an answer you can understand.

Just because a burner is a relatively new model doesn't mean it will necessarily already have the latest f/w update. Latest f/w looks to be ES04. Look here. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2034

Also you need to download this free proggy and report back the manufacturer and ID of your TDK discs. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ If they are cmc mags that could be the problem right there.

Thanks mort since I'm at work I can't look at certain links (dang websense) especially the firmware ones. Seems the problem is either related to his firmware or tdk. In any event will wait to see the reply from forto.

im pretty sure the drive can read the disk, its just the software. im tring to burn seed of chucky, it can read it fine though. i cant use dvdshrink because i only have one dvd drive, if i have a dvd and a cd drive would i be able to use that? some other people had fixed it by switching their dvd drive to master instead of slave, but i dont know how to do that
thanks for all the replys

Since you're pretty sure your drive will read the disc why don't you use that proggy I gave you the link to in my other post and let us know the manufacturer and ID of the discs?

Dvd shrink will work with only 1 dvdrw. Rip the dvd with the dvdrw then it will ask you to install a blank dvd when ready to burn. I recommend ripping with DVD Decrypter first to get around css encryptions.

Depending on how your dvdrw and cdrw are set up, if they are both on the same IDE ribbon cable and IDE channel then all you need to do is change the jumpers on back to dvdrw master and cdrw slave.

All you need for most dvd backup programs is 1 dvd burner drive. You rip the dvd to your HD first, then replace the movie dvd with a blank dvd and burn back. Take a look at the guides off the guide tab at page top. It will show you how to use Shrink properly. Many guides for other programs there also.

you lost me there as I thought the original issue was the drive could not read/ detect the blank dvd. Also as jerry said you really only need 1 drive to backup movies. When you rip with shrink it stores the files in a temporary location but check out the guides at the top of the page for a tutorial on how to use DVD Shrink.

earlier I stated try changing your brand of media. If you want to test a different brand I suggest sony as they sell a 3 pk for about 9 dollars...7 if they on sale.
