I'm interested in being able to soft-mod my PS2 (first generation one), but I'd like to know what it entails (like, how to make/use one of these "slide tools", if I need to gut my PS2 to get the whole thing to work, and if I need to buy anything). I'd rather spend as little as possible doing this.

If you want to play backups you can either get swap magic or a modchip,

Swap Magic is a disk that with allow you to swap it for backups using a fliptop or a slide card, a fliptop is like a lid for the top of your ps2 and it allows you to swap the disks easy by opening the lid at the top, a slid card is a small bit of plastic that you use to pull out the ps2 tray.

Check this link out to see a fliptop & slide tool

A modchip is a bit of hardware that you normally solider to the ps2 motherboard but you can get non-solider ones, modchips work about 100% of the time with backups unlike swap magic which can't load dvd9 games (dual layer games)

You will have to buy a modchip or swap magic b4 you can play backups, swap magic is the cheapest and easiest way that you can do by youself unlike the modchhip unless you can solider.

you can also buy a neo-key usb mod chip it is very simple to install just plug into usb port and cost only $18.99 at console source (link below) they also sell other modchips with your PS2 version you can get very cheap modchips like there is a No-Solder modchip that works with your ps2 for only $9.99

Well i can tell you this, the cheapest way to go is to buy the swap magic , the cheapest i forund was http://www.consoleasia.com at $21.99 . Then you could make the slide card from a credit card. If you good le it youll find a guide. All the old methods are pretty useless and make it easy to screw your ps2 laser quick. Id rather buy the slide card for 1 dollars then mess with my ps2. Thats my style but the methosd above is the cheapest.

Slide cards in general can screw the tray; fliptops are the best and help avoid tray\laser damage.
