Having read various posts on here I have become rather alarmed. I bought a DVD burner to go along with my digital camcorder because I wanted to record my home movies to DVD rather than copy them to non digital VHS. Now I am reading that DVDR disks go off over time (and the time mentioned seem a lot shorter than tape!). Can this be correct? I have CD-R disks that are years old and still play perfectly (audio) or work perfectly (data). Also I am sure I read in a PC magazine sometime in the past that DVDR recordings should be more stable than CD-R?

Should I start copying the DVD videos I have already produced to tape while I still can?

This is a rather lengthy article, however it is really great on describing the longevity of dvd's. If you read it you will have a lot of questions answered

just use really good brands such as Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim and make a couple copies on different kinds of media with different media codes and you should be pretty safe :)

cheap discs WILL go dead, sometimes within weeks

I am wondering about my old Memorex backups. ok..... I know about media now and have been using Taiyo Yuden and Verbatum! But when I was new to this 4 yrs ago I used Memorex. I just recently taken an old movie out and watched it..... still perfect.... and then I made a copy of it and it still was ok.... no reading errors. I guess the Memorex that I used then is ok for now...... I'll wait another 5 yrs and see!!! by then I might have new Blue-ray disks or better and transfered everything to that! who knows!

stick w/ TY and Verbs, then there will be no more arguments regarding media quality~ :) my memorex/CMC MAG have LONG since been at the bottom of a landfill by now, probably read just as poorly as the day i tossed them out~ :P

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

i don't insult a landfill with my utter rubbish media, any of my old crap media (shudders when he thinks of Bulkpaq Orange!) goes in the wood burner, at worst i'm polluting the atmosphere, but crap media deserves torture at high temperatures. Talking of original thread title, last night i made a start on redoing any crappy Bulkpaq's from my collection, it's gonna take a loooooooooong time as there's so many 100s of them. For a laugh i picked any old random 3 or 4 that i knew i'd watched fine, and boy did i have trouble copy/pasting from them.

CRAP MEDIA - make it stop!

I wasn't really exited about since it is not available in the USA yet. They just got some samples in 5 packs all disks individually wrapped. But my friend said they were being distributed in Europe and Korea first. They will be available here in Aug or Sept 05.

@ALAND - i must admit i stay away from PC stores as much as i can, i don't need any media/kit but even when i'm broke (often) i get tempted to buy stuff!; so i don't come across media in stores very often. As i can buy my Verb's online i stick to that, but keep my eye on so many posts that i'm happy you guys know what you're talking about re various media in case i need to lean on the knowledge but 'fraid i'm sticking to my Verb's for now..

I think were making head way Kivory and Creaky on convincing everyone NOT to use memorex (or anything that codes out as cmc mag)
which in some cases TDK uses so be carefull guys. Like Kivory and creaky said stick with either TY,Verbatium or any brand that codes out as TY ,you can add Ritek to the list of good blank media to use also.

Welcome and come all and join the TY camp that Kivory has started ,you will be a happy camper guys!!!!

:)

thank you for that vote of confidence aabbccdd~ i like how you think LOL :P

anyways, back to topic..disk life is VERY much dependent on the dye quality used at initial time of production, w/ CMC MAG, they skimp and cut corners any way they can to make more $$$; MCC and TY on the other hand, do NOT cut corners and care more about their GOOD REPUTATION and HIGH QUALITY. with the high standard they set and their extremely aggressive quality control, even the smallest of defects on their discs will NOT pass their stringent quality control and they are tossed out. CMC MAG, on the other hand, seems like they don't even HAVE a quality control in place, they will sell whatever their machines can churn out, as long as they make money.

so, bottom line is...do yourself a favor, stick w/ TY and Verbatim and your future burns will be MUCH more pleasing and you won't have to throw away your hard earned money on crap like memorex/CMC MAG media any longer~ spend it on something else more worthwhile and worth SO MUCH MORE~your peace of mind :)
