Hi there,

I would go with the BenQ before the HP one.

My answer is NOT based on facts, just that I prefer BenQ to HP brand name period.

For about the same price, or even cheaper, you might want to look into:

Plextor 716A
Pioneer 109
NEC-3540a (I think this is their latest one)

All the above ones seems to please several of the readers here...

I am quite happy with the NEC-3450a (Dell OEM of the NEC-3500)...

The Plextor product is always the best....they are always more but if budget wise you can go with it do it. Some of these plextors are serial ata that have 8 meg buffers...amazing for a dvd burner...check that model out. A cheap solution is any lite on product. They have suited me well for years and always work great.

hi

also to take onboard is bitsetting/booktype some drives can and some cant! so if you are useing +R and want to make make it to a more compatible format like -R then booktype needs changing!

i think benQ does it???

and yes BenQ over HP for me too!

but i would like a plextor!!!

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

I own a HP640c which is based off of the BenQ technology, if you are looking at buying the lightscribe then get the BenQ over the HP. Also, the BenQ will booktype, if you are planning on spending a little more money I then recommend the Plextor, may not do lightscribe but is a superb drive.

I agree I am not popping for the lightscribe media till it comes down in price, sharpie works great and they have all kinds of colors to choose from.

Newegg has the plextor 716 for 109.00. Not a bad deal, and superior hardware. If you have serial capability, consider going that rout.

hi

also to note is many drives now are RIPLOCKED to 1.5x / 2.0x for ripping dvds! so before buying a drive i make sure i can get a hacked firmware from here!

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

both my dvd drives have hacked firmware / region free / 2x on 1x discs etc....

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

It has actually been like that for a while. Almost all DVDRW's are affected by that rip speed. Better to just use a decent DVD Rom drive to rip with anyway..

I am a little puzzled as to why everyone loves the Plextor so much? I have the PX716A and a NEC 3520A. For $60-$70 less the Nec performs just as good as the Plextor in fact I mostly just use the NEC I guess just because I spent $120 for the Plextor so I am saving it :-) The only difference I can tell between the two drives is that the Plextor is bettter at ripping a DVD, but I don't use my burners for that anyway. I leave that to my trusty LiteOn SOHD-16P9S.. Cheers :-)

hi

yes doesnt that NEC 3520A have a hacked firmware that sets all +R to -R automatically? on booktype.

but yes those plextors i would never buy one the price tag sucks, if i had to plum for a drive these days it would be very very difficult to choose for me...

price + hack firmware is top of my list for staters...

bbmayo is your plextor riplocked? and howyou get over it?

I don't really like using hacked firmware so I couldn't tell you if that is true with the NEC, but it does do booktyping without a hacked firmware..

Cheers m8

Yes the plex is rip locked but as I stated above I don't use my burners to rip DVD's anyway.. The Nec is locked also.. In fact I don't think there are to many out there that will rip above 2x without a hacked firmware :-)

I do have seperate lite on dvd rom for ripping. So it would seem its just dvd burners are affected by this? For example on my laptop all i have is one internal dvd burner...its a sempron 2800 with 512 ram 8x dvd burner. Well that explains why it won't rip over 2x lol

I also use a Liteon for 95% of my decrypting to the hd. But the Pioneer seems to always read the occasional disc I have a problem with.

Dang Anibear you beat me to it :-)

I was just going to say that the only ones I know that arent locked are the LiteOn's and they have that Smart-X technology specifically designed for ripping ;-) Thats why I went with there DVD ROM drive and have been very impressed ever since... In fact is probably the best $22 I ever spent!

:-)

do you mean -R or ROM?

it requires hacked firmware to booktype single layer +R to ROM
it will booktype dual layer +R's with official NEC firmware
