Thats not true... Mine does booktype on DVD5 +R disks just fine with DVD Decrypter.

yes its true in the sense that the hacked firmware needs no outside intervention from software... just use any burning app and the drive booktypes it for you! other wise you need an app...
but the standard drive can boktype with the aid of DVD Decrypter and dvdinfo pro i think? or was it dvd identifier? not sure now?

Hi everyone.. Another vote here for the Plextor 716A. I actually didn't buy it; Dell mailed the boxed retail version to me for free as a replacement for the Philips 8631 that came with the new Dell pc.
The Philips wasn't performing up to par so Dell support replaced it; they didn't want the Philips mailed back to them neither.
The only thing I did notice though, is that it doesn't like to play those smaller dvd's that are about 3 inches in diameter. My Philips would play them fine, but this Plextor doesn't do anything at all when I insert the disk.
I actually got that small disk as a sample that was affixed to a TV Guide some time ago; anybody else recieve one too? It was an Elvis Presley disk of some sort.
Anyways, the Plextor is burning fine for me so I'm pleased with that at least.

I love my 108s. You cannot booktype with them, but my pioneer & toshiba have no probs playing any back ups. I prefer + format, more compatible. I never make dvds for others, I do not want the hassle of "It will not work", or "it skips".

Hi Pulsar; thanks for that link! A wealth of helpful info. I recently stocked up with some Maxell 8x +R's because Staples had a decent on-line price for it. So far these are burning fine, and with no jitter or errors when I check with those test things through Plextools. As a newbie here, I am elated for sure.

Yeah, I was actually rather surprised that I had such good luck with them. I bought them because of the price that Staple's had on them, and also because they were listed on Plextor's website as being recommended.
Once I learn some more with DVDD and Shrink and I eventually use these Maxell's up, I want to try some Ty's or Verbs because I've read so many favorable comments about them here on AfterDawn. I'm even tempted to try some dual layer pretty soon, but that darn price of them!!!

Dual layer are way to expensive...give them a year they will be down to a dollar a disk or so....then blue ray will be on the horizon lol

i know for a fact you can't do it with dvdinfopro because it will only let you set the booktype on dual layer discs

flashed drive from hacked firmware back to original NEC firmware and it will NOT change booktype with DVD Decrypter.
it says it failed when i try to change it
do you have an official NEC 3520 or is it rebadged such as a Mad Dog?
the Mad Dog drives can do bitsetting out of the box with official firmware but OEM NEC drives can't

Wel I am not sure whats wrong with your drive but here is the exact one I have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152036
and I am telling you it does booktype right out of the box with Decrypter.. You know what I just remembered you have to use the BenQ setting in Decrypter? That was posted at the Decrypter site before it went down. I don't know why but it just didn't work using the NEC setting it was something lightningUK was working on before he got closed down ;-( Give that a try and let me know what happens?

The Ide plextors are around $120. I have two sata plextors and they are great in performance and price $60 with rebate. Although they can't burn dual layer, but burning dual layer is to pricey (10.00 each disc).

Believe it or not I have seen the dual layers down to 3.00 and change US currency. They will become the standard for a short while then going to blue ray...
