Under speed I would change from Maximum to the 4x setting. I assume you are burning at 4x. Other than that all I can say is I've never seen worse PIE charts....strange there are no PIF's though???!!!

Thank you for the reply.
I reset the speed to 4x and retested the much derided Optodisk and the PI reading averaged 15 except for spikes at the start and finish which (without prejudice) looked good to me.

Does not the constantly increasing scan speed give a reflection as to what happens during a ripping of the disk?
Unless the ripping speed is held constant, does not the risk of errors increase and if so can it be held to a constant rate?

The Disc Quality Scan is testing the quality of the "burn" not the rip. If you burn at 4x I believe the scan should be set at 4x. I rip to my HD at max speed but I ALWAYS burn at 4x. As far as I know the rate that you rip should not be a major factor.

multitasking during the rip is absolutely fine, i always get all my surfing etc done during the rip as i leave pc alone during the actual burns..

Same here. I multitask while ripping. Batch encode with multi shrink. And do nothing at all while burning.

Actually I wouldnt recommend multi tasking ever!!

Now that being said I almost alway multitask with no problems, but the most important time to not multi task is during the encoding phase not the writing (burning) phase.. There is much more stress on your processor during the encoding phase (check it out sometime) while burning a disk hardly uses any resources at all. :-)

bbmayo- You don't recommend multitasking during encoding? I understand that it pretty much pushes my processor to the max, but what harm can it do other than slowing down your encoding time? I usually play games(freecell/solitaire) to pass the time while ripping to the HD, and have never had an issue. Plus I'll do the same every once in a while while encoding (although I usually batch process when I'm not at the PC). I'd be interested in an explanation of why not to multitask during encoding/ripping. Thanks!

i personally do the opposite to bbmayo, i have wrecked the odd burn by surfing during the burn. The odd webpage has caused the hard drive to go ballistic, causing the Nero buffers to drop right off, and CRC checking those burns revealed duff resulting discs. I agree the PC is not stressed by the burn itself and it's the encoding phase that stresses the PC to the max, however i've not once had a problem due to multitasking during the encoding. Not disagreeing with bbmayo, what i will add is that i use Shrink 99.5% of the time, with the odd decrypter usage. What i mean is I don't use a myriad of other encoding/ripping progs like most of you guys so can only comment re Shrink & Decrypter. I should really have stated that in my last reply.

Well I break my own rule all the time because I pretty much multitask during every process and I haven't had a problem with it yet.. (knock on wood) I was just stating the during the encoding phase is when your processor is at its hardest work usually above 95% so this would be the time when problems will most likely occur during multitasking just thinking logically here :-) Again though I don't condone that sort of behavior by you guys though so just don't do it LOL :-)

I agree my processor is working pretty much at max during encoding so at that time I just leave it alone, but I will do some surfing during the rip and burn stage.
