Cannot Burn DVDs

Hi,
I'm about at my wits end. I've tried everything to get my PC to burn DVDs. So far it has failed with two different brand drives, a samsung TS-H552U and a Sony DRU720. Both can read/write to CD's or read DVDs. It's just neither will burn DVDs. I'm running WinXP Home on an Abit KD7 mobo with Nero as my burning software. I've tried using various DMA and PIO settings but no joy. Even removed the Upper and Lower filter registry settings for DVD/CDROMs and re-installed Nero. Any suggestions anyone has would be incredibly welcome. I've read most of the other threads that are similar and tried the various solutions but none seem to help. Below is Nero's Info Tool dump.

I have a very important question for you....
What is the exact brand and type of DVD Media you are trying to record on? is it DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, or does it say DVD RAM?

I've tried both Ritek DVD-R and Sony DVD+R. That was one of my original thoughts that the Ritek I had was bad so I went out and purchased some Sony media.

Man that log is just so damned big and I really don't have the time right now so let me ask a few questions and give a few things you could try...
I see the firmware is up to date - good
I see ASPI is loaded and working - good
Do you have any other burning softare installed by chance? If so get rid of it Nero likes to play alone.. :-)
Do you maybe have INCD installed from NERO? That will definately have to go!!! Big No-No
Try uninstalling Nero - Make sure you download and run the General clean tool from Nero http://ww2.nero.com/enu/General_Clean_Tool.html
that will make sure you get rid of everything. Then go ahead and Install only package one from Nero. Then try burning a DVD if that works then you can continue installing the other packages from Nero, but DO NOT instll packge 3 ever!
If that still don't work you could try burning with DVD Decrypter just narrow down if the problem is with NERO or not?
One other thing get some RW DVD's until you get this ironed out that way you won't be throwing money down the drain. Unless of course you just have to much then you could throw some my way LOL :-)

Okay, deleted all burner programs. This includes removing all Nero products. Ran the general clean tool to remove leftover garbage. Did see where it said the registrychecker found and fixed an error.
Rebooted. Reinstalled Nero Burning Rom only. It hung as soon as I started to burn a compilation. Can't cancel it. Whole comp locks up. Only recourse is the mighty ON/OFF switch. This is same behaviour as previously. Forgot to mention that.
Next I tried DVD Decrypter. It hung as soon as I started it as well. It says down in lower alert box at the bottom Setting Write Speed and that is as far as it ever gets.
Still no joy in Mudville. :(

Hi dahak9: I just read your dvd burn problem. I just want to add my experience in a similar kind of error:
I'm working in a PC that present DVD burn errors. The DVD rom is a Samsung TS-H552U, installed in a HP Pavilion 7954 with a Pentium IV 1.3Ghz and 384Mb RDRAM.
Before we upgrade the memory size, the burn process hang up everytime. After instaled two 128Mb sticks, the burn process has complete, but work very slow. The Buffer level is down or reach only half bar meter. It takes too much time to burn a disc.
I tried to upgrade the Firmware to US06 (it was US03), Get the 4.7 ASPI drivers, change the DVD burn software to Nero 6.6 (it was NTI 7), change and test a Sony and Verbatim media, and change the IDE clabe.
Nothing get a better result, except for the memory upgrade...
My last resource is to change the DVD jumper configuration to prove that this is set correctly.
I hope, sombody can help us with this...

you're quite right - 256MB is not sufficient, 384MB is not too bad (i presume you're using windows XP). 512MB for me was not really sufficient so i went to 1GB and now have a shedload of breathing room

Hello dahak had a quick look at your log and what a log it is have you set your region for your dvd burner ? ie region 2 region 1 etc looks like to me reading the log you havnt if you havnt that can cause problems when burning dvd"s ok..

Can you actually post a log file from Nero of one of your failed burns?
You could try rearanging how you have the drive hooked up to see if that helps? What I mean is you have the drive hooked up as a slave right now on the same IDE cable as your hard drive. You should try setting the jumper to master and hook it up on its own IDE cable in your IDE 1 slot. This might help, and a little more memory would always be a good thing but for burning purposes you really don't use a lot of memory again it's hard to tell though unless you actually posted a log from wither Decrypter or Nero on a failed attempt? You just provided us with all your info, but that can't possible pinpoit where the problems are, but a log file from an incomplete burn might just shed some light?

My apologies for replying so late to your responses as I have been out of town.
I have tried using all the various IDE locations (primary master/slave, secondary master/slave) using jumpers as well as using the cable select option with no joy.
I am unable to provide a log from either DVD Decrypter or Nero as once I try to start a burn they lockup and never recover leaving nothing in the logs beyond saying the burn process has started.
Thanks for all the help though.
