Ok i had the same problem as you... I have a slim ps2 with Swap Magic 3.6 and it says hdd compatable...How do i get it to work? Well i will give you the tutorial that i used and it works well. I warn you that the loading time sucks...USB 1.0 so intro vids are choppy and game load time is more than a disc. gameplay is good but loading sucks.

And Compatablity SUCKS!!! I have tried very many games and only 2 work out of all of them. Here is a site on compatablity but i don't think they are all correct. http://www.xafiers-home.com/ps2/gamelist.php

Thanks to meyer_m for the tutorial. Can also be found here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/189177

You need the following:

- USB Case with a Harddisk (I am using a 40 Gb Hitachi)
- SWAPMAGIC 3.6 disks (you have to buy these because the cd and dvd which you are getting are "stamped". This is for starting up the PSTwo.
- The tool USB Extreme (You can get it from http://www.ps2nfo.com/usbfaq.html) More info on www.usbextreme.com
- The tool USB Advance (I found no site for this, but I have got it from the newssites. You can found it at the moment in a.b.cd.image.playstation2. If your server has a good retention time it will still be here. Search on USBadvance cracked.rar. If it is gone send me a PM and I will repost it somewhere in the news sites.)

Steps to follow:

1. Format your Harddisk in NTFS.
2. Start up USB extreme. Go to the tab Disk Format and reformat the Harddisk. Close the USB Extreme.
3. Create a directory SWAPMAGIC on the Harddisk.
4. Burn the USB Advance on a CD using Nero (or mount the .bin using alcohol 120).
5. Copy the files of the CD to the harddisk in the directory SWAPMAGIC. Rename the *.ELF file to SWAPMAGIC.ELF. This is to make sure that the system starts up and goes to the Harddisk.(COPY THE FILES ON THE DISC....NOT THE .BIN/.CUE)
6. Now start the USB Extreme. Go to the games installer tab. Select the correct DVD/CD drive. Select the media type and your USB harddisk. Give the game a name and press start. It could take upto 30 minutes to read the game. When finished press OK.
Close the USB Extreme programm.
7. Make sure you disconnect your USB drive properly by stopping it within Windows.
8. Connect your USB HS to your PSTwo and put the SWAPMAGIC dvd in.
9. The SWAPMAGIC starts and after it USB Advance starts. Select your game press right and press X when you are on PLAY.

As I said..FEW Games work on it.

A program to use if you have the .isos on your computer and you don't feel like burning them to a dvd or mounting them wilth Alcohol 120 is this one...

This program is from http://www.xafiers-home.com/ps2/

If you have any questions you can PM me. I have this up and working but few games work on it.

Hi, i have tried loading my slim ps2 with my hdd using swapmagic dvd, and usb advance. I have formated the harddisk and copied a game onto the harddisk using usbextreme, however whenever i try to load the hdd via usb the software starts to load and the screen remains black. Is there some configuration i should do onto my ps2?

Everybody says formatted this and formatted that. HOW the crap do you format that thing. Are you simply talking about emptying out the contents of a IDE hard drive.

That doesnt answer my Q. I asked if formatting simply means emptying the content of a HDD or adding some files and tweaking a few settings.

Not sure where the term FORMAT is lost on you bud. Whatever hard drive you are gonna use, must be formatted to a ps2. After its formatted u can start to store things on it.

ok i have been reading a lot about his but am still a bit confused.

I have a slim ps2 and also a HP media drive HD which can connect to any PC and has its own power source.

Is it possible to install the correct software (I.E any of the HD Loader type programs that have been mentioned) and then load some Ps2 games on the harddrive and play them?

I know you can do this if you buy a network adapter and connect the HD, but is it possible for this to work just connecting the HD to the USB port on the PS2??

Meaning the loader program will load of the HD and then load the games off the HD.

Thanks in advance for ANY help on this.

Nicky
