So, I've been trying to find this answer everywhere, but it seems like either nobody answers, or people give 10 different solutions that make no sense to me.

What I'm using: NEC 8x burner, Toshiba DVD Reader, RiData 8x DVD-R's

My problem: ANYTIME I burn a DVD, whether it's avi/divx->dvd, avi/divx->dvd (no encoding, just to play in my dvd player that plays divx) or a straight dvd->dvd, the audio is very low. I have to crank my system up, and then everything besides people talking is REAL high, and the dialogue is still low. This is bothering me a lot, as I am wasting tons of DVDs backing up movies with low audio. The original DVDs audio is fine... so what could the problem be?

I've used dvdsanta, dvdshrink, and nero to encode/burn, and it's the same thing no matter which program I use. 90% of the time I do a straight backup of a DVD, with dvdshrink.. the quality is great, but the audio is crap. When I burn a divx file with nero (no encoding) to play in the dvd player that plays divx, the audio is the same.

I must be doing something wrong, so PLEASE.. somebody help me out here. I am still fairly new to DVD burning, so try not to explain it in a complicated way. I feel a lot of people have this problem, but I can't find a helpful answer.

Thanks in advance, sorry for the long post :/

This seems to be a common "problem". It seems that most of my backups, and those of nearly everyone here has, or have, a slightly lower audio. I just turn up the volume a tad. I have read alot of forums here about this and have never seen anything other than "it's normal".

i just tried some burnt dvds in a different tv/dvd player, and it sounds a lot better.. i just bought my dvd player yesterday (philips dvp-642), and it had the same result (low audio) on my last dvd player (apex something).. are there any settings on the TV/dvd player that would make the sound louder?

Newer systems will downmix 5.1 automatically to stereo, if that were the only track available. Wouldn't hurt to double-check you players audio setup if you have a new audio system.

So I was mistake about one part of my original post :-/ ...the original DVDs sound the same as the burnt.. very low sound.

It must be something with my TV/DVD player, because it sounds fine on a different combo I have in my house.

You say to check the audio settings on my dvd player? What do I look for? I know the audio on the TV is set to "theater", with other options of "concert", "personal", and "speech".

There are many options in the Audio Setup of my DVD Player. Here is what everything is set to:

DOWNMIX -> Stereo (other option is "LT/RT")
DIGITAL OUTPUT -> All (other option is "PCM Only"
LPCM OUTPUT -> 48k (other option is "96k)
SOUND MODE -> None (options: rock, pop, ballad, dance, classic)
REVERB MODE -> OFF (studio, movie, stadium, church, club)
D.R.C -> OFF

I just want the sound to come out of the TV normally.. I have unplugged my reciever/speakers, so just normal audio from the TV.

just in case anyone else has any ideas.. here is something to show how low the audio actually is..

I normally keep my tv on 25 volume, where I can even hear it perfectly all the way in my bedroom (separate room). When I play a DVD with the volume still on 25, sitting about 5-10 feet away, it's almost impossible to hear. To replicate the loudness I listen to tv on, I have to put it around 70 volume.

Just thought that might help show how low the audio actually comes out.

Just an idea if you haven't already, output the player directly to the receiver, even with an optical cable if so equipped. Might help, might not...

J-Rad:

First, it is obvious that your problem has nothing to do with DVD burning or ripping, in any form (as you originally thought.) This thread should really be taken to another venue, in all honesty. Since your original commercial discs exhibit the same results, we know this; and, since the discs play fine on your other TV / DVD setup, you know there is some problem in your playback setup.

Second, it is impossible to diagnose your problem based on the above information you have supplied here. It is not at all clear if you are using a receiver, (and if so what kind!) or if your DVD is connected directly to a TV. Further, at one point you seemed to indicate that you might have a combination TV/DVDplayer... is this correct, or was that just a generic reference to your entire setup? (In one post you stated "It must be something with my TV/DVD player.")

Okay, if you want this problem solved without "people giv(ing) 10 different solutions that make no sense to me," then describe your home theater setup, in detail. Otherwise, expect the replies to be "hit and miss," or a crap shoot.

Examples: Does the audio from your DVD player connect to an A/V receiver? If so, is it stereo? DD5.1? DTS?
If the above is true, HOW is that audio connected? Optical cable? Digital coax? regular audio interconnects (RCA jacks, or phono cable?)

These things determine which settings are necessary in that DVD player's settings. They matter.

Or, is your DVD player connected directly to the TV? If so, HOW? What kind of cabling? And, does your TV have any sort of special capabilities for sound (does it have built in stereo speakers? simulated stereo, or simulated surround sound?)

Without this info, all you can expect is that people are jumping in and comparing YOUR settings with THEIRS, which may be irrelevent, since we may have completely different equipment, and cabling choices, etc.

Your DVD player has all of those settings to accomodate all of the different possible setups that exist in the world, from the guy who has 8 dedicated speakers and two subwoofers to the guy who just wants to send the audio directly to a 15 year old mono-only TV set. Choose the wrong setting, and you will likely hear nothing, or white noise, or reduced sound (like you have), or a very loud feedback.

Give US some necessary information, and there are definitely people here who can help. And, there are also dedicated home theater forums where you can find people who would love to diagnose your set-up error.

-Bruce

Thanks for the reply Bruce.

I know it has nothing to do with the actual DVDs now, but at first that is what I thought. To answer your questions about my setup, here it is:

I have a 20'' RCA TruFlat TV, and a Philips DVP-642 DVD Player. It has Component Video Input, and 2 L+R+V inputs. The DVD Player is connected to one of the L+R+V inputs (using basic RCA Cables), and my Playstation2 is connected to the other one (using basic RCA Cables as well). The Component Video Input is unused.

The sound type on the TV is MTS Stereo, and it has 2 built in speakers (1 going down each side of the TV).

All I want is the DVD player to play through the TVs speakers.. no reciever or other speakers are connected anymore.

If you need anymore information, let me know. I appreciate the replies from everyone. Thanks.

I had a similar problem after I copied my Dukes of Hazzard DVDs.. they played fine in one stand alone player but had no sound on another. Every other DVD I put in it played fine, including the original DVD. I ran a DVD Laser Lens Cleaner for several cycles in the player that was giving me sound problems and now the copies play fine with sound and all. If nothing else works you might give this a try.

im thinking it has something to do with my tv, but i have no idea what it could be
