Great info on the forum guys. i am new here. I just got a sony DVD-RW DRU-800A 16x, double layer dual layer drive. I made the mistake (before coming here) of buying "stapes" brand od DVD+R and the first movie i burned got choppy about 20 min into it, froze and accually restarted the DVD player. Burned it again, at a diff speed and it got better but it now freezes when the movie starts. is this the cheap media?

Could you all please post your top "2" fav media to buy and show me a link to where i should buy it. All these "codes" are confusing so if you could send me direct links o the products on the page i woudl greatly appreciate it. Then i will buy some quality media. TY and Verbatium are fine with me for sure from what i read..

**also..i have an older (about 3 years) and a newer (about 1 year) DVD player. DVD+r DID play on my old one, so should i get the +r? advantage for me over the -R?

Thanks guys!!

Hello kered05 and welcome to AD. Taiyo yuden and the verbatim data life plus are very good.

I usually buy maxell, sony,or verbatims when they are on sale.I look on the wrappers for "Made In Japan",especially on the maxell and sony's. Staples have the maxell's on sale this week, spindles of 50 for $19.94. I will look for the ones made in Japan,if they don't have them, then I will take the add to walmart and get theirs for the same price.

Try a small pack of maxell in both the plus and dash format. Beware of the smaller packs of maxell in the plus format. C-mags are reported in them. Those are the ones we stay away from.Just look for made in Japan on those maxell's. After burning to each format, see if your pc drive/s and standalones will read them. They will decide which format they prefer off your sony dru-800A.

I think most people on here are going to tell you to go for Taiyo Yuden (you can buy this at best buy and try to hit a sale, look for the wording "made in Japan"... don't buy this if it says made in taiwan") or any verbataim. These are the 2 best i think if you polled the whole site. They are quality media and you can't go wrong. I have burned over 1,000 dvd's...and i can honestly tell you that is the best. If you don't take my advice do at least one thing...NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER buy compusa or memorex!!!!NEVER EVER EVER EVER!

Damn, this is really tough to choose because there are at least more than 2 brands that are definitely top notch medias.

Well, honestly, FUJI/Taiyo Yuden and MAXELL (both are in DVD+R MADE IN JAPAN) are 2 of my favorite medias so far. Other top notch medias are "Verbatim and SONY", these 2 are as good and reliable as the TY/FUJI and Maxell as well.

NOTE: to all newbies, whatever you plan to do i.e. back up PS2 games, XBOX games or DVD movies, just stay far away from "Shitmorex". Don't even dare to lay your hands on Shitmorex's products. If you dare to do so, don't come back in here and say I have a problem like this and like that, that my burning process failed, etc. Lastly, don't say that "no one" at afterdawn.com "did not" warned you.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

TY and Verbs for me~ :)

you can find them locally as other people have stated, but if you want a few links ONLINE, assuming you are in the U.S. here ya go:

http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-dvd-r-media.html

(these are all genuine TYs, take your pick of flavor depending on your OWN preferences of speed and or printable or not~)

http://www.rima.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=...

(same here, choose the ones that you like according to what you want to do) :)

http://supermediastore.com/verbatim-dvd-r-media-blank-dvd-media.html

(here are some Verbs, while the prices are not so great, you can find them cheaper locally when bestbuy, compusa, microcenter, staples, circuitcity, etc have their sales-but these are what you should look for, depending once again on what your purposes of backups are)

hope that is a good start, keep reading around to find the sales at local retail stores...good price range is approximately $20/50pk or $40/100pk spindle in either of the 2 types i mentioned~

good luck to ya~

Yeah, ditto what kivory666 said.... If you do your homework, TY's and Verbs are no more expensive than the "bargain" stuff. Yet, they are definitely superior quality. Save yourself from grief and rummaging through spindles looking for "Made in Japan." Just get the unbranded TY's online and Verbs on the street!!!

If you live near bestbuy and wait for a sale they usually go on sale like every other week. They are not on sale this week...but Verbs are usually 19.95 for a pack of 50. Then they do the sales for like 39.95 for a pack of 100. I saw once a sale for 29.95 and a 100 pack of Fuji's aka TY if they say made in japan. This week sadly they are not on sale is CMC aka Memorex...aka the worst you can buy. I went last week to my local store on a friday and they had 1 pack of verbs left...they do go fast!
