HELP!!! converting home movies to dvd

I need to find free soft wsre to convert my home movies that I downloaded to my pc so I can burn them to dvd.

What kind of format are the movies in (e.g. AVI, mpeg, Video_TS)?

I'm not sure all I know is that I took the pictures with a sony dig camera and downloaded them to my pc and used windows movie maker to make a slide show. How would I find out what format it is.

For free ware to work it will take multiple programs and alot of time. I use Sonic My DVD. Your original capture should be in dv format. Unless you told Movie maker to capture them in WMV. With a program like sonic it's as simple as capturing video from camcorder, set up menues if you wish and click the burn button now I like that.

1) Are you talking about pictures or movies or both?
2) Checking the format is important for to find the appropriate program. Just browse and take a look at the extension of the movie clip files (e.g. xxx.AVI would mean AVI format, xxx.mpg would mean mpeg format).

OK I checked the pictures are jpeg but the slide show i made with the pictures all it said was windows media(TM)movie.
