I have the WinTV-PVR-250 and currently use the Ulead DVD MovieFactory software that comes with it.

The situation is I have mpeg-2 files in SVCD format that I want to back up to a dvd blank disk.

#1) Ideally I would like to make a dvd format out of these SVCD mpeg-2 files. So when Ulead starts up I choose a dvd project but when I use the Ulead software it bloats the size of the files I add to the project.

For example a file is 250MB and when I import the file it's now 750MB...hmm not good I thought so I decide to jump to option #2

#2) Ulead starts up I choose SVCD project...I've done several projects using a blank CD-R to create a SVCD disc for friends of mine...but this is the first time I'm doing it with a dvd disk...it should be the same process only thing is the media is larger hence I can fit more files onto the disc

But I'm attempting to add a twist...have Ulead insert break points in the files so when I hit the "next chapter" button the dvd player it will jump to the next break point...I just specify what increments in minutes for the break points. I tried this on a CD-R media with the break points and it doesn't work...meaning I try to hit next chapter to jump to the next break point it jumps to beginning of the file...so I have to watch the file from start to finish or hit the rewind or forward button to advice the position.

So where members step in is option #1 even possible and if possible explain why wouldn't this work?

I'm comfortable with option #2 but need recommendations on what I'm doing wrong with Ulead and the break points or advice on some other software...prefer freeware.

Also using WinTV2000 but would like to get the subtitles any software that could do this + similar features of WinTV2000?

Thanks

Hey alyssaC,
Good question; I'm not certain that you can put SVCD 2 on DVD and have it read properly. I think that the way that the DVD is written is different from that of a CD due to the structure of the disk but as I said I'm not certain? The fact is that SVCD is MPEG-2 and DVD video is also MPEG-2 so it sounds good from the video format perspective. I looked up SVCD, DVD, MPEG-2 in the glossary and it does say:

"Just like VCDs (and audio CDs), SVCDs require a specific way how they are burned on the CD -- just sticking all the required files into CD structure doesn't make disc a SVCD compatible. Most of the new CD burning applications support SVCD already, so authoring your own SVCDs should be relatively easy."

This suggests to me that likewise sticking video files on a dvd does not necessarily make it a dvd. If it is possible I would certainly be interested in doing the same thing as changing the SVCD evry 45 minutes or so is a pain. Anyway I use Nero Ultra 6 it can Encode Recode and do virtually anything that I've needed it to do. I don't have any video in SVCD format but I will get some and experiment with it this weekend.

I've tried option #1 and had the same result; Nero turned the 700 MB SVCD's into 1.5BG of data. Thery would have burned to DVD though (I didn't do it as the data was simply test vbideo) Why the data expands I don't know so I bet that you aren't doing anything wrong in option #1 but rather it has something to do with the way the data is stored on the dvd disk. I must admit that it was a good idea I woould have liked to put some of my episodic titles in SVCD format on dvd. I have yet to try option #2; when I do I'll leave the results here.

Hello Dissone,

That was a pretty good explanation and thanks for the info you posted.

Wow I can't believe you went through the effort to help me figure my problem out :)

Hope you can figure out option #2 since I have plenty of SVCD videos that are begging for me to watch and much rather stick them on dvds instead of cds

but if not oh well just post an update on your results ;)

When I try to build a new SVCD project Nero will not even recognize my DVD burner as a potential recorder; the only option available for a new project is my CD recorder. I don't think it's possible but hey I learned something and it was an intriguing idea anyway.

Sorry I couldn't help any more then this :(
