I got a samsung ts-h552b dvd writer. I can burn any kind of cd's, never had a problem. Dvdrw's aren't an issue either, it burns any at any speed perfect. But when it comes to dvd-+r's i can't seem to get one that works!! i tried Ridisk,Verbatim,Tuffdisk,Pc-line,Maxell,Phillips, etc, i tried about 12 diferent types, and all of them stop somewhere along the burning process. With most of them i got dvdrw's and i got no problems whatsoever. I got the latest drivers, the best burning programs (NERO) but that still happens. Does anyone know of any brand that might be compatible to this writer, because it's really doing my nut in, and it's starting to be dificult to explain my wife why i have to buy new dvd'rw every week ( i got about 350 blank disks that i'm scared to use).

it seems to me that there is something wrong w/ your setup...perhaps a Nero log (since you said you used nero) could help us out here to find and resolve your dvd-r/dvd+r burning issues...out of the list of media you mentioned, i would ONLY trust Verbatim and maybe Maxell, what are the media codes you are getting on these 2 brands? and you say you have the latest firmware too...so, this issue MIGHT be setup/hardware related...need more detailed info, hence im asking for a Nero log, that might be a start~ :)

@permiggs,

I, totally am, agree with Kivory on this. You need to post (copy and paste) your Nero's error log and post it on here, so other members with more knowledge and experiences can determine what is best to fix your problem for you. You should have posted this in the DVD-R/+R for Newbies forum, or the DVD-R/+R Drives section. Anyways, I will still try to help you here.

Sounds like an DMA/PIO Mode and InCD issues to me. I highly recommend you to "uninstall" or get rid of Roxio and InCD if you have them on your computer along with your Nero burnig program. InCD and Roxio is a pain in the @ss, with that being said; it will conflicts with your other burning programs -- this will cause your backing up process to fail 99% most of the times, and that means "coasters". Additionally, you can check out this link to reset or enable DMA back on - http://www.burstcopy.com/dma/xp/ - if you're using Windows XP. If you've followed what to do on the link and failed after rebooting your computer, and your computer still show PIO Mode. Then you need to (a) "uninstall" its driver manually, (b) reboot your computer again. Then your Windows will "automatically" reinstall the driver for you when you restart windows. To "uninstall" your driver(s): do the following steps, and yes... it won't hurt to uninstall your other dvd-rom drive as well, if you have it on your computer, especially you're showing in PIO Mode now. This will make both of your "dvd-rom drive" and "SONY dvd burner" runs/burns faster or in another word it will be back on "DMA Mode" after Windows reinstall it for you.

((((( To enable DMA back on by "uninstalling" it's driver )))))

A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER", left click on "PROPERTIES"
B) left click on "HARDWARE", left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"
C) left click on +sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives
D) double left click on your DVD burner[SONY DRU] or your dvd-rom drive (do it once at a time and restart once at a time)
E) left click on "DRIVER", left click on "UNINSTALL", you will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system", just click "OK", now "SHUTDOWN" or "restart" your computer
F) once you restart your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner and install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!!

NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "uninstall" it from the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

*** these steps are after you'd already went to DEVICE MANAGER only ***
(A) left click on + sign of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
(B) double left click on either Primary or Secondary IDE Channel (NOTE: you have to know where your "DVD Burner" or "DVD-ROM drive" is installed to what Channel). Usually it's the "Secondary IDE Channel" because your "C: drive or Hard Drive" would be the main aka Primary IDE Channel already. If you're not sure, then you need to check it with "Nero Toolkit" first before you "uninstall" any of them. Once you verify with Nero Toolkit, then you can continue with the next step.
(C) click on "DRIVER", "UNINSTALL", "OK" and then "shutdown" or "restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!!

(bb) To verify your dvd burner/dvd-rom drivers with Nero: Open up "Nero Ultra" or "StartSmart", click on "Nero Toolkit", then click on "Nero InfoTool" (InfoTool will run and retrieve all drivers), now click on "Configuration" - this should show you where your DVD Burner/DVD-ROM is installed under either Primary or Secondary <--- make good note of that and you're ready to "uninstall" your dvd burner/dvd-rom drivers now.

NOTE: I recommend you to use high quality medias such as FUJI/Taiyo Yuden, MAXELL and SONY (make sure it's a 8X DVD+R and it says "MADE IN JAPAN" on the spindle/package box - they're the most genuine medias in the market. Another top notch media is "Verbatim", this is one of the top class media that is pretty well known, and it's as good as Taiyo Yuden/Fuji and Maxell as well.

Hope this help you a little and have fun burnings.....

Gen. Kiv,

Thanks for your generous words there Gen. hahahas... :-):-) Anyways, yours is also a good advice as well. Hey, I just put in my first 50 pack of Taiyo Yuden Printable silver top at http://www.supermediastore.com today. Have you used them "printable TY" before? I'm sure it's as genuine as the regular TY because it's an 8X DVD+R. I've been using them regular TYs and FUJIs 8X DVD+R for years without any coasters what-so-ever, but I just did purchased myself an "Epson Stylus R300 InkJet Photo Printer" at http://www.newegg.com 2 days ago, you know. I think I'm sorta tired of my "sharpie pen", it's starting to look plain. Now I want to explore something new, I like challenging stuff, and especially it's computer related.

So, you got any feedback or advice for me there Gen?

:) alkohol~

as a matter of fact, i have the R300 Epson as well and i wrote in a post MONTHS ago about how i preferred the "silver matte" TY printables over the white ones...they seem to "stand out more" adds a semi-glossy look to them~ yes, they are genuine just like the 8x TY as i have maybe 200 of them (silver printables). it comes down to personal preference...i like the "look" of the silver printables...many others prefer the white top printables as the colors seem to be more vibrant on those...whatever floats your boat i guess~ :)

i stick w/ my Sharpie only because im lazy to find the scanned pic online and load it up (i don't own a scanner so i can't do it myself) to print onto the discs. i have a few printed so far on those discs and it looks good in my eyes, and naturally since they are TY discs, they perform just as well as the others ones you and i are familiar with~

give it a go buddy, it's a great printer coupled w/ great media, you shall be pleased~ :)

Gen. Kiv,

Good to hear from you that it's as genuinely as the regular TY. I guess I may have read that thread you posted sometime ago, and I reckon some of the experienced members did preferred the "TY Silver Printable" over the White one. Thus, I decided to get the Silver instead. Yeah, I guess I will love my new R300 too, then, huh.

I'm pretty much experienced in regards to making labels -- I used to make Fellowes labels on my DVD+Rs using Glossy labels. However, I've stopped using it and go with the "sharpie", but now I'm ready for the next level. I have another Lexmark printer with all-in-one that I can scan pretty decent with the quality. So, I guess I'll be making DVDs like crazy in a couple of days from now. See you around buddy. :-)

First of all i would like to apologize for posting this in the wrong section.
I haven't got In CD installed because i noticed it was getting in my way, I don't know what Roxio is but it's not in my computer. I can't give you guys a print of the log because i don't get a chance for it. The burning just stops and everything keeps running as normal. If i try to open the tray nothing happens, if i try to close the program, i get a window saying that the cd won't be playable etc... And then it freezes! Nothing happens. I noticed that when i tried to shut the computer down, In CD was always not responding. I figured that In CD was conflicting with something there. Anyway i unistalled Nero, and reinstalled it back on. I followed that link you gave me and it said "Ultra DMA Mode 4". My hard drive is my primary IDE channel (...Mode 5), my dvd driver is my secondary IDE channel (...Mode 2) and my writer is the slave (...Mode 2). I don't know if that makes any sense to you... So basically DMA is enabled in here. Should i just try to buy anoter writer? Or will i have the same problem?
Thanx

@permiggs,

I'm not an expert on Nero, but without the "error log" it's hard to predict what's the real issue here. To view your error log or successfully burned, try to look at here: C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log - if you can't find it in there, then try here: (C:\Program Files\Ahead\NeroVision\NeroFiles\Nero History). For DVD movies, I usually backed up with either Nero Recode 2 or Vision Express 3 and have found the successful burned logs in there.

I could be wrong, but there is a possibility that your fan is clogged up or there could be too much of dusts inside your computer, thus it may be "over-heated" while you're in the process of backing up a movie. Have you tried cleaning the dust out and make sure your fans are blowing with airs running thoroughly inside your computer? What is the last time you did a C: drive or Hard Drive "defragment", perhaps, you might want to consider of doing it. Have you updated your dvd burner's firmware lately? If not, give it a try -- sometimes updating your dvd burner's firmware will solve burning issues due to the limited of media's compatibilities from the burner itself.

The link I posted earlier is just an example to troubleshoot in regards to DMA issues only. It isn't neccessary on the DMA Mode i.e. 5, 4, or 2, etc. The main thing is make sure it's not in PIO Mode, then you're safe. My Primary IDE Channel (Hard Drive) has "Ultra DMA Mode 5" on both "device 0 & 1", and my Secondary Channel is "Ultra DMA Mode 4 (dvd burner), and Ultra DMA Mode 2 (dvd-rom drive)", so don't sweat on that all right.

In the mean time, just be patience and someone with more knowledge will help to resolve your issue in due time.

Hello, Sorry had some problems with my connection. Also the reason why i dont apear at the same time as you is because im in London, so when its 20.30 here its 14.30 there... At the time you guys posted i was beeing slaved at work... Anyway, my computer gets defragmented several times a week because the HD is only 80GB and its about 70% full, i got its guts cleaned when my burner got installed... Theres no dust around any of the 3 fans. Firmware. Now, this burner didnt come with a cd. It was plug and play, so they said anyway. But i got it upgraded at the samsung website. I also got the manual wich told me this:

DVD Recommended Disc Types
DVD-R Media
Taiyo-Yuden / Taiyo-Yuden, TDK, Mitsubishi Chemical, Hitachi Maxell, Fuji Film, PVC, Panasonic,
RiTEK, CMC, UNIFINO / Taiyo-Yuden, TDK, Mitsubishi Chemical, Hitachi Maxell, PVC, Panasonic,
RiTEK, CMC

DVD-RW Media
TDK, Mitsubishi Chemical, JVC, PVC, RiTEK, CMC / TDK, Mitsubishi Chemical, JVC

DVD+R Media
Taiyo-Yuden / RICOH, Taiyo-Yuden, Mitsubishi Chemical, RiTEK, CMC / RICOH, Mitsubishi
Chemical, RiTEK, CMC, Prodisc, Optdisc

DVD+RW Media
RICOH, Mitsubishi Chemical, RiTEK, CMC / RICOH, Mitsubishi Chemical, RiTEK, CMC

Out of these brands, and among a lot of others I used TDK, Hitachi Maxell and Fuji Film, none of them worked.

I hear quite a lot of people in this site mention Taiyo-Yuden but i cant find it anywhere in England.
Sorry, im still in the dark...

if you really want TY try www.svp.co.uk (i'm in UK too and buy a lot of stuff from svp, but i buy mostly Verbatim, have only bought TY once, and that was from svp).

As for Verbatim, i buy datalifeplus - lots of them. MCC are top quality manufacturers. MCC (Mitsubishi Chemicals Corporation) is the parent company of MKM (Mitsubishi Kagaku Media), which in turn is the parent company of Verbatim.

well, just based on what you said from the manual...i would personally suggest the 1st 2...Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim~ :) as those 2 brands have worked wonders for others in the past...is there any way you could post your Nero log, both creaky and i can help you further if we see what's going on...but make sure you edit out the your Nero serial before posting on here...it should begin with a 1A#.

creaky is in the UK by the way, he can suggest where to purchase these discs~

I definatly can't get a log. As i'm writing this, the drive won't open the tray, the burn process has stoped and Nero is still counting the minutes to the end of the session... And that was on a Hitachi/Maxell DVD-R. I tried to find the Nero history and i can't find it! Im gonna dig a hole in this bloody machine!!

@permiggs,

Try here: To view your error log or successfully burned, try to look at here: C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log - if you can't find it in there, then try here: (C:\Program Files\Ahead\NeroVision\NeroFiles\Nero History).

Yes... I agree with both kivory and creaky in regards to genuine medias. Both of them are the few super sharp members that you'll ever find at afterdawn, regardless of what is the main issue. Not only that, but they're inevitably, knowledgeable and has got tons of experiences in pertains to hardware troubleshoot, dvd-r/+r back up, blank medias, etc. Last but not least, they're pretty cool as well.

Again, I just want to add and agree that you should continue to use genuine medias such as Taiyo Yuden/Fuji, Verbatim, Maxell, and TY/Sony in the future. Not much help from here, and unfortunately without knowing what is the main cause behind your computer, there's hardly any answers to it.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.
