Now, this was done on a DVD-RW, if it was on a DVD-R, the writer would of stoped just after the lead-in.
Work your magic gents...

good luck with that!, somehow me thinks dvds will take a backseat for quite some weeks/months :)

i got your logfile in notepad - have found a few problems, will paste results shortly; a lot of us around here are quite sad, we're here most days/nights..

Sad? You mean sensible! At least you're not outside robbing and stealing, or getting pissed so you can have your weekly fight. Trust me, it's much safer to be here on the computer trying to catch up on learning about how it works... I still get pissed here tough.. :)

@permiggs -

Yeah, you're definitely right there, sensible is good. Though I just got back from a week working in Germany, with some salesmen also. So was pissed every night, big food also every night; i was imagining what it must be like being a salesman, living like that all the time, can't be good for your health, eating and drinking to excess with customers every night.

- download dvdinfopro (free from www.dvdinfopro.com) and run one of those -R's thru it's media info check, pasting results here

My personal suggestion would be Verbatim datalifeplus from www.svp.co.uk.
Yesterday i burned a fair few 16x Verbs (at 4x). Plus it's best to keep to 4x to reduce chance of dodgy burns. ps not sure what maximum speed discs you can use on your drive, mine is ok with 16x though i still only trust burning at 4x. I tried 8x for a while but had the odd disc that wouldn't work so i went back to 4x

OK Let's see if i got it covered...

Got the winaspi file updated, but there's no setup file with it, will it auto update itself? There's an install batch file here, when i select it, it open a ms-dos window, and it just says press any key. On the aspichk it still shows ver 4.6 tough...

I have just downloaded the ts10 update from samsung.com but the download software doesn't seem to work. It just freezes.

I can't find a way to change DMA node in the virtual drives, tried the way you told me (i printed it on paper) but i can't find the channel. Both my drives are in the secondary IDE channel, where are the virtual ones?

Free up some memory? How do i do that, do i just delete programs?

I'll have DVD Shrink in a minute.

I have DVD identifier, is that any good? i can give you a log if you want.

Germany? They have the beer festival, it lasts for a week! Did you have a go at the autobahns? Mate, beeing a salesman is harder than what it looks, although you do do a bit of traveling wich isn't that bad at all.

Thanx

- that link i sent you has the exe file to download. download and run it..

you'd need to run it from dos or windows 98 boot disk i guess - i suppose you could visit www.bootdisks.com and make yourself a Windows 98 boot disk. can be far too much hassle but without more to go on re the freezing can't think of much else to suggest

i wouldn't worry about the ASPI for now then. as for Maxell discs, i don't use them myself, but believe they're pretty good. So, we're back to firmware as that's the crux of it, if firware is out of date it won't recognise media correctly/or newer media/or burn speeds etc

I have force aspi 17 installed on my computer, when i instaled it with the ms-dos batch, it installed without probs. But this new version, don't seem to be doing much, it opens, and nothing happens, it just says press any key.
Normally it would say software updated, reboot your computer, isn't it?

just had another thought. you may have to disconnect that other dvd drive to allow the flashing process to work. it's probably confused seeing two drives. or it's trying to flash the wrong drive cus you have 2 drives there..

I've disconected the dvd drive to see if it would do anything, but it still freezes, downloaded the ntfs flopy thing, to make the boot disk, but when i try to make it, it says that is missing the required component... For some reason the samsung flash program that i downloaded to upgrade the firmware, makes my windows explorer crash, so i have to restart the computer on the plug, any idea why?

i know what to do to get round this kind of thing but it's not the easiest thing to put into words or whatever. it's all do-able, just takes a little fiddling, or putting burner in a.n.other pc sometimes is easier

I've been messing around with this computer all day, i understand the problem is got to be the firmware. Tried Samsung's flash software, didn't work. Tried the boot disk, didn't work. Ran out of ideas, and pacience. I'll try again tomorrow. Thank you guys specially Creaky, You ARE the MAN!

@permiggs,

Maxell is another top notch media; it is as genuine as TY and Verbatim. I strongly deem that Maxell is also made by Hitachi Corp. (in Japan). In addition, some websites even list Maxell as top quality just a little higher than TY and Verbatim, but as far as I know, they're all equally the same.

Looks like creaky has taken care most of the issues for you already. Anyways, have you tried saving your Samsung's updated firmware into a cd-r disc? Once you're completed, then put the disc into your dvd burner and open up it's updated firmware from Star, Run, then browse to your dvd burner drive, open up it's firmware updated and hit OK? This is the only alternate way that I can think of updating beside just double click on its firmware after you've completed downloading. I did this method to update on my 2 yr old Toshiba dvd rom drive (that's what the readme notepad said) and it's working fine. Worst of all, I'd said just "reformatted" your computer and start from fresh.

Permiggs, here is an example of a successful backed up log from Nero. I'm using Maxell 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan" to back up "Million Dollar Baby" by using DVD Decrypter and Nero. Just for an example that's all.

sorry, been at work all day, finally time to catch up on things...seems like creaky has done his excellent work again in finding the problems...i personally think it's down to firmware now~ once we get that resolved...things should be good~ maxell is decent media, i have used a few in the past, but, not extensively~

hmm...about installing that firmware...once you download it from either samsung or rpc, there should be an auto exe file~ double clicking SHOULD just make the install start...lemme think about it some more...
