I recently purchased a new computer with dvd burning capacity. The model is a HP Pavilion a330n with an Athlon 64 bit processor, 1 gig of memory. The dvd burner is factory. The name is HP dvd writer 640c and a dvd rom drive named IDE-DVD DROM6216. The burning software that came with it is Sonic, a brand I never heard of. After initially trying to use Sonic which only managed to burn 2 discs with numerous failures. I talked to a friend who clued me into dvd shrink. Shortly after I found your site and learned about dvd decypter. I installed both of them and they worked like a charm. However, I also installed a copy of Nero since then I began to get "incompatable format" errors. I uninstalled Nero bur am still getting incompable format errors on most discs I try to burn. I am using Memorex DVD+RW and Sony DVD+ discs. Even weirder, sometimes, when I have managed to get DVD Decrypter to copy, neither my home GO dvd player or my dvd rom drive will recognize the disc as valid. My GO player refuses to bring up the dvd logo or to play and HP dvd rom drive simple spins the disc also refusing to play it. They both work fine with some of the discs I have recorded and of course with precords. As I am new to the world of dvd burning, I would certainly appreciate any advice from experience burners. Thank you.

Hi there,

Well quickly, there a few things I can say.

#1- Check if you have the latest firmware for your HP-640c burner.

Quote:
Release Date: 2005-06-10 Version: JS04

Description

Description:

The upgrade includes the following features:

Improves write strategies for new brands of DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW and DVD+R DL media.
Improves strategies to avoid missing calibration required when buffer under run.
Cannot change book type of DVD+RW using BookType Management
Corrects flash fail thru 1394 interface
Improve the flash failure rate
Disable the supporting of Ricoh +R DL.
Instructions:
Download the JS04.exe file to the computer containing the DVD Writer drive. Once the file is fully downloaded, double-click the JS04.exe file to install and initiate the firmware update. Follow the on-screen directions to complete the firmware update.

Reminder:
The PC should be power cycled off after the firmware update. Failure to cycle power may result in the DVD Writer temporarily malfunctioning.
2- If Sonic has DLA (Direct Letter Access)enabled, it can conflit with other burning software. If you don't use it, I would turn it off.

3- Memorex media are really not that good. Using better quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim would probably help.

4- Burn slow, fast burns on DVD media causes playback problems.
Most of us will burn at 2x or 4x unless you have the best media, which are Taiyo Yuden.

Good Luck !

Normanl, make sure you didn't download the "in-cd" packet when you downloaded Nero. That packet can cause some problems.I agree with cougar, try some better media first.

What speed are those sony Plus format discs you are using along with the memorex +rw's? 4x/1x-4x/or 1x-8x? Their quality can drastically differ between all three of those speed ratings.

I also got a new hp pavilion after my main pc blew 2 power supplies and a gig of ram. Mine's the a1118x-b. It also has sonic and the hp 640c lightscribe. I also have Nero,DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter. My first on the fly copy coasted out because of a software conflict with Nero.I successfully burned on the fly with sonic, but it took 20 mins at 4x. I can make an extra copy through DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter quicker than that.

cougar_ii, thanks for that info on the Direct Letter Access and the link to the updated firmware. I'll bookmark that update for future purposes. Getting rid of sonic entirely is no problem with me if I have to. I do like my oem older version of Nero. Well over 400+ on the fly burns in my last pc with 0 coasters.
