I have never used JVC brand dvd blanks before. Have any of you? Do you like them? Well, I was in Big Lots today, and saw they had 30 pk. of JVC 8X blanks (both +R and -R) for $11.99 a pack. If you'll look at my user name, you'll see I HAD to buy a pack to try. I have used two so far, and they worked very well. If I can get through half the pack, without any bad ones, I may have to buy a couple more packs. I just wish they were printable ones.
If any of you live near a Big Lots, you may want to check them out. At least there won't be any rediculous shipping charges on them. LOL My local one is sold out of the paper right now, but I usually buy my Glossy Photo Paper from there too, for $3.99 for a pack of 20 sheets. I use that for my dvd covers.

DVD Decrypter says the manufacturer for these JVC discs is MJC ME. Are they a good one? Not familiar with the different ones.....

In my area here in west central ohio, those Big Lot close out stores are called Odd Lots. My local store also have these jvc 8x discs. The first thing I checked on them was the country that manufactured them. They are made in China, both plus and dash formats. I'd be pretty skeptical of chinese media.

$11.99 for 30 discs = 40 cents a disc. Way too much, especially chinese media. I pay 40 cents max on all my non printable dvd media at local stores like staples, bestbuy, office depot, office max, walgreens, comp usa,and circuit city. And the quality is excellent and you can even get some of the fuji's and sony's that were made by taiyo yuden for the same price as those jvc's.

Try going 300+ burns without a coaster on the good maxell, sony, verbatim data life plus, and taiyo yuden media. If you waste half that 30 pack, then you're paying 80 cents apiece. You can get taiyo yudens on the net for around the 30 cent range along with free shipping if you look careful.

Glossy photo paper: staples have the hp semi gloss 6.5 mil/ 165 g/m2/45 lb bond 8.5 x 11 in paper. Somewhere in the $15-$18 range for 100 sheets. This paper is thinner ,but my dvd covers look just like the original. The product code is Q2509A.

Just my 2 cents worth. I usually keep an eye out for all those stores i posted above for their on sale media because there is always some great quality media on sale,if you are cautious of buying media on the web.

I 2nd what saugmon said entirely, i would seriously stay away from anything MADE IN CHINA in terms of media~ :) even the dreaded CMC MAGs that we all have come to hate are still made in taiwan, i can imagine that these JVC (taking a good name and bringing shame to the company reputation by producing it CHEAPER in china) will not last very long if they seem to burn ok right now for you~

it's one thing that china produces SOOO much stuff at a fraction of the cost for stuff made here in the US or even Europe for that matter; as people say, "you get what you paid for", and with the JVC blanks...you are actually "doublely screwed" since as saugmon pointed out, you are not actually paying LESS for them...this is on par w/ some of the GOOD media at local sales (best buy/compusa/circuitcity/etc) for the media~

i can assure you that these JVC blanks are NOWHERE close to high quality as Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim...as well as the others that saugmon pointed out...maxells, sony..etc.

i know that i can be a "label guy" sometimes w/ my equipment as well, while JVC does make some very good quality components; the fact that they DO NOT produce blank dvd media for themselves, they outsource to other manufacturing companies (and in this case...a very cheap one-where one can assume is NOT of high standards), your chances of depending on the JVC reputation in this case...is VERY slim to nill of being good~ :)

Recommended Media:

Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

I'm gonna have to start reading the sides of the pkgs. better. These JVCs say made in Malaysia.

In my area, I occaisionally find the good name brands on a decent sale, but not very often. Have found 20-25 pks. on sale for $17.99, so I thought $11.99 for 30 pk. was good. My main pk. I'm working on now, is a 50 pk. of Fuji (printable) I got at Sam's Club for $35. Can't afford too many of those. I can usually only buy one pk. of 20-25 at a time. Sometimes (a lot), I only get 10 pks.

I have burned close to 300, without very many coasters. Maybe 10-12. Coasters came from a pk. of TDK (always thought they were a good brand), and a pk. of Khypermedia (should have known better).

I have NEVER seen any 8.5 x 11 photo paper in the $15-$18 range for 100 sheets. Seen 20 sheet pks. priced like that, and maybe a 50 sheet pk. on sale. Again, tough to spend that kind of money on paper. Rather spend it on discs, and get cheap paper. With paper I get, you can't tell difference from original.

We have a Staples about 25 miles away. I check there frequently, although I hate the place! Full of stupid people. Hard to get waited on. There is a Walgreens in the same town. Will have to check them out. Nearest Best Buy, Office Depot, Office Max, and Circuit City are about 35 miles away. Don't get there much. Nearest CompUSA is about is about 75 miles away. Get there very little! I'm glad you guys have all these big time stores nearby. It creates competition, which means lower prices. The only thing we have in my town is Big Lots and Wal Mart. No competition here, so prices aren't that great. The town that's 25 miles away has Wal Mart. They say their only competition is Target, so they have a LITTLE bit better price than my town. Online is better prices, but like was said in my Verbatim DL thread........... by the time I pay shipping on one pk. of discs, I can get them here at Wal Mart.
I live in a geographical oddity! Hopefully you understand a little better now, why I think $.40 a disc is pretty darn good! I go to Best Buy when I can, but it's not often.........

@JVC:
You need to discover internet shopping. Meritline.com, Rima.com, Newegg.com, Supermediastore etc. can get you higher quality media including the shipping charge for 40 cents or less per disk. Watch for the specials or the free shipping offers.

I'm only a minute's drive to staples and super walmart, but the better stores like office depot, circuit city, comp usa,and best buy are a lot farther.Staple's have the hp this week, usually crappy cmags.I believe best buy has the sony 1x-8x,spindles of 50 for $20. Other than that,i didn't see anything I liked.Office depot has their store brand media on sale, probably cmags also!

Kypermedia: I wouldn't even use their media in my original K-hypermedia +8x burner, LOL

Tdk's: Very hard to tell. C-mags is a lot of their plus format media, but the dash format looks to have some higher quality manufacturers.

Fuji's: I haven't tried any,but they have some very good manufacturers. Best buy seems to always have these on sale.

Verbatim, The last time I went to sam's club,I only saw only the verbatim data life. The +8x verbatim data life plus are the only ones I will buy. The digital movie quality are pretty good, but not as good as the data life plus. They feature the metal azo dye.

Maxell: One of my favorites in the plus format. All of the 4x I have burned were ricohjpn-01,no matter what quantity of packs I got.The plus 8x's are riteks and hitachis, also very sweet.Beware of the small 3 or 5 packs made in taiwan-reports of cmags on them, bummer.

The dash format maxells has even better manufacturers like taiyo yuden, ritek, and hitachi.

Sony: Another of my favorites, but only the 1x-8x speeds.
Beware of the sony 1x-4x and 4x sony's.They tend to use the same ID codes for multiple countries like austria, japan, and taiwan with their slower speed media.I found this out on their dash format.
