it does sometimes and doesnt others
i put a dvd in there and sometimes it reads it like its suppost to and tells me whats in there
and others it wont
so i reboot with it in there and it sees it then?
thats strange

Are you talking about recognising your burner, or recognising data contained on dvd's, please be a little more specific and provide your PC specs aswell......................?

i run xp pro
just got a benq dvd burner off of newegg
and basically wont recognize it as a burner and it wont recognize when i have something in there
meaning when theres nothing in there it shows up as a normal cd drive on my computer
i know when it recognizes it, because it says benq dvd/dvdr under it or something to that nature

check your master/slave jumper settings. Go into device manager and see if it shows any problems there. Is it original movies it's not recognizing, or just burns?

Also check your IDE cable to it.
Make sure there are no bent pins anywhere, replace the IDE cable if you can to eliminate that.

its with both burned and reg dvds it wont read it after i initially had used another
so i reboot and it works fine
just now noticed another question comes up, ive just recently started burning, and a few of the dvds ive burned, might be all of them, 2 lazy to keep restarting the cpu to see if its the case but i know 2 of them dont have sound?
something i can fix after ive burned or are they just coasters now?
the video is fine

Well, if you forgot to add the audio streams, you won't be able to add them to the discs.
You'll have to backup the original again................
What are you saying now?

what happens is if i start the computer up with a backup or plain dvd it will recognize it in the drive
once i click it or watch it or whatever its ok
take the dvd out and pop another in, whether is a backup or normal, it wont recognize it
my drive even changes names from benq dvdr writer to cd drive D:

for the audio problem, have you checked the audio section of the menu on the disc? Some DVDs I've noticed either copy weird or they default at DTS audio, which you need a DTS decoder to hear and TVs don't have that (well, most anyways).
For the other problem about your drive, do you have the drive on its own power cable (meaning nothing else connected on the same cable)? Because I just ran into something similar that was resolved by distributing the power a bit better.

if you can I'd try to give it its own cable. Everything you put on that cable draws current and if you have too much current draw and the cable (or connector) can't handle it it compensates by lowering voltage. That's why I had 4V going to a 5V plug and my PC wouldn't boot, kept saying that I needed to plug in the power cable to my video card. Gave it its own cable and it's up at like 5.1V.

sorry squizzle this is for the 2nd to last post you made........can u go in more detail about the audio feature i should turn on
i use DVD Decrypter and shrink and got a great guide with pictures and everything. followed it step by step
ive been testing the burns back in my dvd burner that did it, possibly it would work on tv with sound ya think?

when you play the dvd, if you copy the full disc including menus, from the menu there should be an audio menu or in the setup menu, you should be able to change the audio there, like 5.1 surround, DTS audio, etc.
Not all DVDs have this menu though, and if you did movie only you may be SOL on this one.
