Seems like I have read every thread post on disc burning and read speed. Almost everyone is against burning above 4X. I have always burned at 8X and I have very little problems. I am wondering if anyone is burning at 16X. I can buy a pack of Verbatim 50 8X for $19 and change. That is what I always get. Yesterday, I noticed that they have the Verbatim 16X for the same price.(as well as the printable) I think I will get a pack and give them a chance. Someone must be buying them and not be having problems or they would stop making them. I think they may have improved on them since last Oct. when they came out. Has anyone bought any and tested? What was the results after using them. Please no opinion replies, just test results.
Thanks

- there's your answer :)
i have just bought some 16x Verbs but won't risk 8x on them as i did that on my 8x Verbs and 8x TY discs for a while. I reply to far too many posts EVERY night where burn speed is a factor to personally encourage 8x burning (to all those noobs who post here), but if you're getting good results, nice one.
'fraid you just won't get a flood of replies advocating higher than 4x burning.

Not really...What I am asking is for people who have used 16X to post their replys. Also I believe that the older computers need to burn at 4x. However, the new ones that have HT can burn 8X with a 95% sucess rate. I do it all the time. I just want people that have tried the 16X on the newer computer to share what they saw. Thanks for your reply!!

I have a benQ 1625 and I always use max when burning and I have been up to 13x on TY's and no problems.
I only use TY's and wouldn't try it on any other type of disc,
except dataplus.
I write heavily compressed dvd's slower.

I have been burning at 16x with 16x media for months. I have to admit I have an occational coaster (1 in 50 ) but I do not think that is related to the speed. I use Taiyo Yuden media and Verbatim media. I also use 8x Maxell (MXLR G03) rated at 8x but burns at 16x in my Nec. I have burned over 800 discs at 16x and I believe the success is because of the firmware and the media. If your firmware write stratagies support 16x media you will be successful.

sorry rushman, not got a test result. but not got an opinion either just an interest in all things to do with dvd burning
i've always burnt at X4 with a pioneer 106 with verbatim +r 8x discs and never had a problem, in fact they have been the only disc's i can recommend .....
but last week i got a pioneer 109 and just updated the firmware to
1.57 and like you said the X16 look to be replacing the X8 verbatim's
so like yourself was wondering if pushing passed the X4 speed is going to show a differance in quality,

I did 4 test today. 1 XXX, 1 Cartoon, and two recent movies.(16X) They play perfect on all my players at my house. Some of my friends came over and I sent them to their house for test. My $36 Magnavox from Walmart playes everything I burn with 16X. Some friends have problems playing movies on the more expensive players that are couple years old. The cheap players work the best. Apex, Cyber Home and magnavox MWD 2000 F. My Sony always plays my back ups. However, you can always get a bad disc out of the box. Some players will not play if you have to many errors per sector. The players I mentioned always plays.
Just Passing it on!!
Thanks

@rushman1 -
i appreciate your question and your opinions, however while i don't trust my burns to higher speeds, i'm just concerned that lots of newbies will read this thread and ignore the common sense replies and storm into 16x burning, then i guarantee we will have a flood of posts re bad burns as these people won't appreciate that a 100% successful burn does NOT always equate to a playable disc. I must reply to 20 or so posts every night, where bad media, burn speed etc are major factors to people's problems.
Granted these are top media but i myself had had the odd problem with 8x on 8x Verb's, and few round here are more into their Verbs than me. But i'm glad some people are having success - i'm just looking out for the noobs myself.

I`m with creak on this one,and in all honesty we are only talking about time diff here. The time diff in burning at 4X to faster is minimal, and success rate is more important to me than the few minutes longer my burns take.

Well this thread failed to disclose one thing. Are the people who insist with staying at 4x using up to date computers. I think it is the combination of computers ( P4 HT) burners (Plextor) and software.BTW.the software I use does not allow me to select the speed. So I dont know what spped I am burning at. All I know is that it pops out at 6 min burn time with a 16x verb disc. I guess thats around 12x.
Thanks

my computer is very up to date. when i did try 8x, twice on this kit, both discs were useless. what i can't remember if that was before i went to 1GB of ram or not. i myself now stay at 4x out of paranoia and have no intention of changing just yet, just don't want the gried of intermittent failures/major reburning exercises.
however what's most important about burns speeds is what gets recommended to newbies, ie most people suggest 4x because that's what a lot of experienced and knowledgable users see as the best speed with the best results. it's no different from CD's where just cus you can do 48x burning, doesn't necessarily mean eveyone should burn at 48x and get good results.
however there are people who are able to use higher speeds successfully and that's great, but even they recommend lower speeds to the masses. we get far too many posts every day where speed of burn is a proven problem factor so the first thing to do is suggest people try a lower, better speed, then go from there.
glad to see you're having success with higher speeds, maybe my own paranoia will be kicked into touch sometime but for now i'm happy to stick to dull ole 4x :)

@Rushman1:)i must agree with creaky. i use RiTeckG05 rated 8x but never burn above 4x and most times even slower. that way it is an assured successfull burn
and you'll find that most on here have a half decent computer (except me of course mine still runs on gas)LOL

my computer runs on fish bones :)
but, i will have to wholeheartedly agree w/ my buddy creaky...i for one think my computer is fairly up to date, 4 gigs of ram, 3.4ghz Intel Extreme Edition w/ additional 2mb level 2 cache; i use various burners from a pioneer dvr-109 to a sony dru-710a...i happen to burn MY backups @8x, with no problems; BUT i still continue to recommend newbies/others to stay @4x for best results. everyone has a slightly different setup, regardless of how "new or old" it might be...4x is generally regarded as the "safest" speed for reliable burns, i still preach this despite my personal use of 8x~
good luck to you all, sometimes, slower IS better..the consistency of it is higher than burning at high speeds, namely 16x~ :)

and to add to this one, i've just watched a movie on a trusty Verb 8x -R (burnt at 4x) - and it skipped. i'm gonna use up my stocks of -R and switch to +R, booktyped. Even though i think what's happened is that i multitasked during that particular burn, i don't tolerate even one jumping disc.
*grumble* dvd burning *grumble*

come to the 8x/16x DVD+R side of the fence creaky~ u know i never have problems or skipping w/ my MCC003s or MCC004s~ i naturally booktype everything i make, so once your DVD-R are used up...i would suggest to try the DVD+R Verbs...they are nice...all i can do is praise the good quality of them...unlike the 16x DVD-R Verbs that some are experiencing troubles with, i have YET to have even 1 with the 16x DVD+R flavor. just a thought...good day
