I recive a write error when shrink dvd ans dvd decrypter tries to write to a blank dvd-r when I try to back up this movie. Nothing is written on the dvd at all. All medias fail. Fugi, sony, verbiem, GQ, tdk. I tried to back this on up for a few months now. I heard this one is on the impossible to copy list! Any feedback would be helpful.

I have no idea what list you are refering to but everyone I have had contact with on this and other forums have successfully backed up this movie without any problems. Have you ever backed up any movie with Shrink. Are you new at this. I suggest you read the great guide listed in the cover page of AD.

I didn't have a problem w/ this film at all using DVD Decrypter to ISO Read then DVD-Shrink to change extras to still image etc. Output as ISO & seperately burn w/ Decrypter in ISO Write mode [x4 is maximum speed suggested & use a decent blank]

It sounds like you already have the movie ripped to your hd. If that's the case the problem not the movie but something else. What is the exact write error? Can you post a log? Does your burner write to -R?

I had no problems with this movie. It's been awhile - probably used Shrink and Decrypter.

Crappy media is probably the cause of your problem. Try different disks. I used Decrypter and Shrink and had no problems(well I did get the warning about possible structure protection.) If you get a write error it probably means your burner dont like your media.

I changed a couple settings in DVD Decrypter that might of messed things up. But there are very few setting to change. I will try to list an error report. It is very strange. DVD Decrypter tells me there is a write error. However nothing was ever written to the disk. I can also use that disk again because it is reported to be blank in windows. To anlad, there is a list of disks that are reported as (vdc) very difficult to copy. And this movie was on the list. I am relatively new to digital backups. It is a very sensitive process. I will try to find the link for that info. And blinkie 7 I will get a error report and post it.

How long does a successful burn take? It take my system about 5 hours. That doesn't seem right. I use DVD Decrypter then DVD Shrink then dvdclone2. I use to just use DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. But then DVD Decrypter started to bomb on the burning sequence. I also have AnyDVD in the background.

Hi Chaseme,

Sounds like there could be a DMA problem as the whole process should only take around 35 mins. Search the forums for how to set your primary and secondary IDE channels to DMA. Once you have DMA enabled on both channels follow the guide below to the letter.

Here are all of the required steps to ensuring a hassle free backup.
First of all make sure that you have the latest version of AnyDVD running in the background and have no other programs running on your PC (including an internet connection). Insert DVD into your required drive and when AnyDVD has removed the copy protection open DVDShrink. Click 'Edit', 'Preferences' and make sure that the box next to 'Run analysis and Backup in Low priority mode to improve multitasking' is UN-CHECKED. Click 'OK'. Click the 'Open Files'button, locate the Video-TS folder in the directory of your drive. After the first analysis manipulate as normal removing extras etc. to suit your personal taste. Click 'Backup'. The first tab is 'Target Device': Where it says 'Select Backup Target' select 'ISO Image File'. Do not select'Iso Image File and Burn with Decrypter'. Next click the 'Quality Settings' tab. Ensure that the two boxes for 'Deep Analysis' and 'adaptive error conpensation' are UN-CHECKED. The use of 'Deep analysis' can double the time it takes to backup a disc and the use of 'adaptive error conpensation' can quadruple the time taken. I only ever use the Deep Analysis mode, and that is only when the main movie is compressed to 70% and lower. Now click the 'Options Tab'. Make sure that the 'Run backup in low priority mode' box is UN-CHECKED. Click 'OK'. Shrink should now be backing up the dvd as an ISO Image File to the folder of your selection. While this is happening do not use the PC for anything else( it is also recommended to adjust your screensaver properties before attempting any of the above so that the screen saver will not activate and interrupt DVDShrink's encoding process). In the progress box that comes up make sure that you deselect the use of the little preview window. Once Shrink has finished backing up the DVD to the Hard Drive close both DVDShrink and AnyDVD. Open 'DVD Decrypter', Click 'Mode', 'ISO', 'Write'. Insert blank DVD into your burner. Make sure that your burner is selected as the 'Destination'. Select the ISO image file that you just created using DVDShrink as the Source. Set the writing speed in the bottom right corner to'4x'. I would advise against going any faster than this for the best backup quality. Click on the pictures of the drive and disc to write the disc. That's it. When DVD Decrypter has finished you should have a perfect backup. If not please be aware that nearly all playback problems are as a result of using poor quality blank discs. Use Verbatim or TY's for superior quality.

One last note: DVDShrink's encoding speed is also effected by your processor speed, PC memory etc. A good friend of mine uses exactly the same method as me to backup his DVDs yet his PC takes twice as long as mine due to his very slow processor.

I hope that everything that you could possibly need to solve your problem is written above.

Best Of Luck!

Snakeeye.

Snakeeye, wow you were right my ide drive controller was set to pio. I set it to dma and followed your instruction and was able to rip avp perfectly. Amazing how one setting could make a huge difference.
Why does the controller switch back to pio though. I have to sometimes switch it back to dma?

I have followed the instructions exactly on this page, yet instead of writing an ISO file, it writes 4 individual files with the extensions I01, I02, I03 and I04 and then an MDS file. I've checked all the settings and it all seems to be ok. Any suggestions?

@Emerallde

You have a hard drive that is in Fat32 and not NTSC format and needs to break the movie up in smaller chunks. If the movie is smaller that 4.3g then open Decrypter and use the iso write mode and open your MDS file. If the movie is larger and you need to use DVD Shrink the open Shrink go to file and then open disk image and open the MDS file. This file will rejoin all the other iso files.

Yeah, think Arnie meant NTFS, but I understood what it meant. This did work perfectly, by the way. Used DvDShrink to rip it, then DVD Decrypter on the MDS file to write.

Thanks for the help!

Sorry arniebear - it just gave me a little smile cause I'm queen of the typos - it also looked like something I would do. :)
As for 'oops' - well I won't even go there (referring to myself).

Hi,
I too am having a problem trying to backup my copy of Alien versus Predator but it is not like any problem I have had before. The disc plays fine on my home dvd player but refuses to be read on my computer. I am quite experienced at backing up my discs and am starting to wonder if there are some dvds out there with a new type of protection since I also have two other dvds that my dvd rom or dvd writer cannot read, they are both working fine with almost all other discs except the one named above and Constantine and 13 going on 30. Anybody got any ideas.

@billyfish - there's nothing funny about the 3 films you've mentioned. I've used DVD Shrink alone to backup all 3.

sounds like a media problem to me - download dvdinfopro (free from www.dvdinfopro.com and run a disc thru it's media info check. paste results here

Hi Creaky,

I think you misunderstand, I can't even play the original discs on my computer they play fine on my home dvd player but neither the dvd rom or the writer will play the originals. When I try to play the discs all I get is a message asking me to insert the disc to play or no disc inserted.

@billyfish - sorry my eyes/brain weren't quite in sync as had been up all night working, missed the bit about drives not reading the discs. in your case there's obviously something a little amiss. need something more to go on as one drive messing you about i'd understand but not two drives

Hi Creaky,

I am sorry I don't really have any more to go on my dvd writer would not read the discs so I thought maybe it was because it was a writer so I purchased a Samsung Dvd rom that is supposed to be able to read all types of disc but still the problem persists. What is more baffling is that for some reason the 13 going on 30 disc now works and I have been able to back it up. I don't know why it started working but I just kept opening and shutting the drawer with constantine in and then changed it for 13 going on 30 and it worked. I tried the same thing a couple of days ago and it just would not work I have not changed anything so I am baffled. I am starting to wonder if it has something to do with the region code but my rom is set to the same region. I bought the discs from abroad and my home dvd player can play any region.

hmmm... i always use region-free firmware for my drives, that'd certainly be worth doing however you'd usually get a real obvious error/message if it was a region problem thingy
