You'll need the following programs to crack and then back up.

((((( for cracking/decrypting engine )))))

01) DVD Decrypter (free... this baby can decrypt and back up awesomely)
02) DVDFab Decrypter (free... this program is slowly rising and could be the next DVD Decrypter)
03) DVD43 (free.... cracking/decrypting engine)
04) DVDIdle Pro (retail... cracking/decrypting engine)
05) DVDRegion+CSS Free (retail... cracking/decrypting engine)
06) AnyDVD (retail... cracking/decrypting engine)

((((( for shrinking/encoding/compressing )))))

01) DVD Shrink (free)
02) Nero Recode 2 ( retail)
03) InterVideo DVD Copy 3
04) any of your preferred encoding/shrinking programs

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

If you have DVD5s, then DVD Decrypter will do (both ripping and burning). If you have DVD9s and would like to burn to DVD5, then rip with Decrypter, compress with Shrink, and burn with Decrypter. Consult the guides at this site.

No problem. Check out alkohol's list of suggestions too if you have time. They do wonders if you know how to work with them.

@gwendolin,

Since you've got Nero Recode 2 already, now all you need is DVD Decrypter (yes... it's free), you should get this while it still available here at afterdawn.com - DVD Decrypter will "decrypt" or rip and crack any of the "encrypted protection codes/copyrighted protection" that was put on any of the original dvds. Go here to download - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_...

I assumed that you're pretty much familiar with Nero Recode 2 already, since you said you owned it. Here is a basic and simple steps to back up using DVD Decrypter and Nero Recode. I'm not an expert on Nero, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

01) open your C: drive or hard drive, click on File, New, Folder, and name it MYNEWBACKUP_DVD, enter [ENTER] to save it.
02) now go inside "MYNEWBACKUP_DVD", click on File, New, Folder, and name it VIDEO_TS <---- yes, type in "exactly" like this and then hit ENTER to save it. Now closed that.

(((( to decrypt or rip a dvd movie using DVD Decrypter ))))

01) put good quality media in "dvd burner" (please use good quality medias such as TY/FUJI, Maxell, SONY (all Made In Japan only) and Verbatim (Made In Taiwan is OK since it's rare to find one that's Made In Singapore now-a-days)
02) put original dvd movie in "dvd rom drive"
03) open up DVD Decrypter, click on MODE, File F
04) "source" <----- from your dvd rom drive
05) "destination" <----- browse to your New Folder that you created earlier aka "MYNEWBACKUP_DVD", and VIDEO_TS, then click OK
06) now click on "DECRYPT" <--- it's the arrow next to the disc and burner icon. Sit back, relax, go smoke or go watch TV and wait until it's completed.

(((( to encode a movie or shrink a movie using Nero Recode 2 ))))

01) Open up Nero Recode 2, click on "Recode an Entire DVD to DVD"
02) change your "CUSTOM" settings to 4,400MB and check on "Fit To Target"
03) click on "Import DVD", and browse to your New Folder "MYNEWBACKUP_DVD", then to VIDEO_TS, then OK. Recode should do a quick analysis now, once its done you should have the whole completed movie with titles, main, audio, subtitles, extras.
04) NOTE: now you can remove any unwanted audio, subtitles and extras, so your back up will be better on quality. If you don't want to remove anything, then just leave as it is and you'll have a "full disc back up", now click on "NEXT"
05) "Destination" <--- Hard Disk
06) "Target Folder" <--- browse to your folder: VIDEO_TS that you created with DVD Decrypter earlier, then click on "BURN"
07) once Recode completed the encoding process, you'll have at least something like 20 VIDEO_TS small folders inside your folder.
08) open up Nero Burning Rom, Nero Express or DVD Decrypter or any of your desire burning/backing up programs and back it up. That's it... easy as smoking.

Hope this help you a little.

No problem.... and you're welcome. I'm still new to all this stuff myself as well. I have very little knowledge about backing up DVD movies -- I guess after all those years of ripping and burning DVDs, audio CDs; I'm doing ok as of now. All I can say is.... afterdawn.com rocks!!!

Yeah, please come back in here if you have further issues regarding ripping or backing up DVD movies all right. Cheers now. :-)
