there is no new firmware for my burner. any ideas on what is going on?

thanks

In most cases, a sudden slowdown in speeds means your IEEE controller or controllers have been gotten changed from DMA mode to PIO mode.

Check here, scroll down to the section dealing with DMA:

Or install your hardware properly by reading the instructions.

Primary and secondary slave/master etc.

Believe it or not my DVD RW is the slave to my bog standard DVD player in my PC but it works!!!!!

Tried all DIP switch settings etc, various IDE cable formations etc.

Only the above works....

And it works fine.

You might have to unistall ide controllers several times before it will change to DMA mode
1.
Start,My Computer,R click,select properties
2.
Select hardware, select device managergo to ide controllers.
3.
Uninstall how ever many drives you have and restart, should reset back to DMA mode.
4.
R click primary ide controller, select properties, click advanced settings.
Select drive back to DMA

Im alright Chaz but cheers anyways.

Windows XP did exhibit problems initially, with vanishing writer drive, but after making DVDRW the Slave and DVDR the Master, everything worked fine.

Trust me I tried all IDE combos and BIOS settings.

I can burn at max DVD write speed (8x), read max speed both DVD drives, but cheers anyways for caring.

It works, I ain't fixing it.

I have never tampered with flashing the DVD BIOS, trial and error rules with what you got.

All should be set to DMA. Your drive will be listed above the ide controllers in the tree.
