I have found some great info here, and promising. But also in a search I have read where some things wont work with Magic 3 because the chip deactivates after booting or something.

Here's what I want and I need some advice if it can be done:
1- Put backups on the HD & Run them off HD
2- Backup retail games to HD & run those of HD

(I know this sounds simple but please only answer if you know it works with Magic 3 chips)

Ok, before you answer, remember that with this chip I've heard that you cannot just swap disks all the time and have everything work. I'd get the swap magic and all that if it actually worked but mostly what I want is to hook up to PC, put the games on the disk and put it back on the PS2. I know that I can't use HDLoader or any of those things to copy backups from the PS2 DVD drive but am guessing I can throw them on via PC and have them work.

I don't care how many exploits or how hard it is to do, if it works I will do it but just don't flood with info about what you did with your chip or unchipped PS2. That stuff is making me dizzy :)

For USB Advance/eXtreme I used a WD400 in a USB2 enclosure. I installed games with the official Windows interface and used USB eXtreme Free Edition to boot them.
For HDLoader I am using WinHIIP to install games onto the WD400 in the USB enclosure. Then I transfer them to a Maxtor 120 DIAMONDMAX PLUS 9 6Y120L0. I boot with Fully Patched HDLoader.

Yeah it probably should'nt be any different to any onthr chip. But you need a memory card exploit to boot, since i use SM and if ya don have a modchip then SM with mc exploit is best way. Not sure about the Magic3 chip but it should work with a HD like anything.
I use a USB drive with some games on and Usbextreme to load em, which boots from da memcard when i put a Psx game Cd in.

The easiest way to put games on a HD is to get a USB one like me, 80gb-120 is fine, download USBextreme from http://www.eurasia.nu
First connect yer drive to the PC, run USBExtreme.exe and start installin your DVD games. It's very easy to do, then you connect it to your PS2 and the only last thing you need is to burn a cd with UsbAdvance on it, which u can DL from that site. It shouldn't be a problem to start the cd if u have a modchip. I was thinkin is it that one thats a solderless type? and still requires swap discs.

Hope that helped

Cheers

It's a regular mod chip. No swapping or anything. I think it was designed so that you could still play online games by shutting down once the game had booted. It's hard to find info about this chip. I know it is great at booting backups on any kind of media, all regions. I am just getting worried about the future of my laser. I'd like to throw games I play a lot on there like Star Ocean and Lego Star Wars that gets played a lot by my kid.

I have now a patched HDLoader elf thingy that claims to be much better than HDAdvance. I'm not sure what to do with it yet though. Maybe it will become clear once I unpack the file and read instructions, lol.

I have never seen info like you just posted. Thanks. I think I might get an enclosure to put one of my spare HDs in and go that way through USB. Do you still need the network adaptor for that to work? Seems you wouldn't since it's USB. My immediate thought is can you use this software without USB? But then also it might just be easier to unplug the USB if it conflicts with the Magic 3 when I need to boot DVD backups.

Yeah i found the USB is a bit slow with loading em and i read its cause the PS2 only has usb 1.1 interface damn!. But I suppose its good if you're wanting teh give the all important laser a needed HOLliday! and save it's ass :P. Which it really does! i like it cause its alot quieter than hearing my frickin noisy laser.
I originaly have wanted the normal HD for my PS2, but because i would need to get a network adapter just to use it, that puts me off due to it would be costin more. I could do it tho, what sort of Hd have u got, hey where did you get the patched Hdloader.elf from? cause i'd like to download it.

Loading a game on a usb drive is the easy part i find, but i later found half of my frickin 8 games i loaded on don't bluddy start from it! and probably not from any other hard drives either, which really suck.
Did you install your modchip ur self?, cause i'm wondering if its hard to do it or not?. I can solder, but am too concerened about buggerin up my $ony.

Thx

Ok. First THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for the link to the USB Extreme stuff. I realized I have everything I need. The DVD Burner I use is in an enclosure and I had an extra hard drive in my PC. So I used partition magic to format it FAT32 (It wouldn't detect until I did that for some reason). Then I formatted it with USB Extreme on the PS2. I'm not sure exactly what file system it is now. It doesn't show up in partition magic anymore but works with the new Windows USB Extreme software.

Cool thing is, I can mount the games with Daemon Tools and copy them right to the hard drive now and they work! Seems only unpatched NTSC games but this works with backups so this is awesome!

It's a little slow loading, and as advertised FMV is slow and crappy but games go fine and this will save my laser. I can just leave the USB Extreme disk in my PS2 and choose which game instead of switching disks all the time and plus again no laser problems (except that it is on when a disk is inside from what I read BUT it doesn't need to strain)

My PS2 is professionally modded with Magic 3.1 of course. I hear that HD Loader has problems with Magic (why I started this thread) and also compatibility with hard drives is low. I'm using a Western Digital 40 Gig hard drive. I'm thinking if this works good enough I will put it back in my PC and use the 120 Gig one for PS2 then I can have like 40-50 full size DVD games on there.

I'm not even sure where I got the Elf file but I think I found the link in this forum so just search about it.

Total cost to do this was ZERO!!! Thanks so much!!! I recommend just getting an enclosure and using a spare hard drive if you have one. Luckily I decided to get an external DVD Burner off eBay and it was just a regular one in an enclosure but bonus for me this time, hehe.

I'm not sure if that hacked USB Extreme disk will work without a mod chip but it's worth a shot. I think it will because all of my games never boot unless I reset and this auto booted.

I will stop back here and see what games work I have a ton to try. I think probably more games work with a mod chip but the USB Extreme site has a list thread.

I have Ace Combat 5 (DVD), Gradius V (CD), Star Ocean (DVD), Transformers (DVD), Tekken Tag (CD), and X-Men Legends (DVD) on now. These are all backups (NTSC USA) and some I didn't even have to burn first (just mount and transfer-which is faster). I'm out of DVDs to burn now so this is great. Other games that didn't work were mostly PAL converted to NTSC so I think it is the ID (some of them booted the P/N switch which I patched in but not the game. I put Burnout 3 USA DVD on their but it was Echelon so I don't know if they hacked something to show off like usual or if it's the game. Might be a way to rename the ID to trick it I dunno. What games are not working for you and are they backups or retail? Which games ARE working for you? All mine are backups but I have a chip so it works. I have about 25 games now so I will try to list them as they succeed.

Let's list our hardware maybe that will help also.
SCPH 30001 USA/NTSC Model v5 I think it is called
Magic 3.1 Mod Chip
USB Advance Free Version
USB Extreme (Windows interface version)
Western Digital 40G HD w/enclosure
Formatted with Partition Magic as FAT32, then formatted again with USB Advance Free Version on the PS2.

Hope I can remember which games I patched so I can try the unpatched correct region versions. They would probably work unpatched but then I'd have to get a RGB cable and the whole point of getting a modded PS2 to save money on games. Got a deal on eBay it was premodded and hardly used for about $150. You can sell a regular one and buy a modded one, hehe. Total would be less than paying to get it modded when you add it all up. I didn't spend a dime getting the PS2 either really because I sold my XBox for the same amount!

Oh, I think that HDLoader Elf was here: http://www.exploitstation.com/index.php?page=elfs
I am curious how you load these on your memory card?

Hey,

Hdloader, are you using that?, cause i'm wonderin if it would work with a usb drive, i've tried but doesn't, have u tried?. So are you using a normal HD w/ a network adapt and a usb also?, or do you just use a usb. About that patching are you patching for PAL or for them to work with the Hd?, cause i like ta know if there are patches for games that just refuse to load off the HD.

I've got 36 games, and i now know which ones i have tried usin on my Usb HD and don't work. Thanx for that list it helped alot!.

These i've tired and found didn't work:

1. Brothers in Arms, a real shame!
2. Flatout
3. Burnout 3
4. Shell Shock Nam '67
5. Conflict: Vietnam
6. Jak 3

I loaded on MGS3 just teh otha day, and thankfuly it works!, and was thinking that really wouldn't. Have you tried any Metal Gears?.
Funny how it's the ones you like to really have on the hard drive and would luv ta use but they just-don't-friggin-work!! grr.

Thx

I'm geting a network adaptor so I can use HDLoader. I'm wondering if I can just use the same drive or will just have to start over. I haven't tried MGS yet. I know there are patches for games like GT4 and God Of War that help HDLoader. I have the fully patched HDLoader and a cool GUI for WIndows to load up the games to HD. I now just need to test it when I get the adaptor.

I haven't had any luck with patched games, but I have heard many people are patching from NTSC to PAL and it's working. I redownloaded a lot of games in NTSC and they work fine so it best to just get the right region.

This USB eXtreme thing would rock if only PS2 had USB 2 instead of 1.1. What a shame. Some CD games run fine though and if I had no other choice I would put up with the load times and stuff. It reminds me of an Amiga 500 when I play off USB, lol. If they would just put a "loading game" screen in somehow it would be a lot nicer that a black screen every time you walk into a new room or parts of a large game map.

Someone is working on getting games like Burnout 3 to run. A few people I know also think maybe the same kind of way you patch DNAS games might make them readable from HD. Someone said they built in DNAS to a lot of games just for future versions online or something. And all those games happen to be ones that don't work on HDLoader.

UPDATE: I had to reformat the drive for WinHIIP so I think the answer is no to USB eXtreme working on the same drive. However, I can install the games to the drive while it is in the USB case and then take it out and put in the PS2. This is a nice time saver and so I don't have to open my pc and hook up the drive then restart every time I want to add games.

Hey,

What sort of drive are you using a Maxtor?, sounds like your usb is just a plain IDE drive in a case. It is isn't it?, i got mine in a case and I didn't realise until now that it must be just an ide-usb converter cable inside. I want to use hdloader too, cause it's much better & alot more fun with lots more things you can do wit it!. Mainly the need to transfer some saves from my near full mcard, and i think is just better then using a usb i guess, only if ya have the orig PS2 that is! hehe :P

Maybe you like ta know if you get a drive for your PS2 go for a Maxtor cause apparently i read somewhere they work the best for PS2s.
And they are the most reliable ever.

Yes, it is just a WD400 drive in a USB enclosure. I just ordered a Maxtor 120 Gig off eBay. In the meantime, I am installing games to the WD400 and then I will copy them to the Maxtor 120 when I get it. I just found a GREAT site that has compatibility lists for Fully Patched HDLoader and Toxic OS.

http://list.ps2hd.com/

The main site has good tutorials, exploit saves you can put on your memory card, etc.

http://www.ps2hd.com/

So you can run almost any game between Patched HDL and Toxic and if you can't it tells you if there's a patch or something you have to do.
