Hi all and thanks for the warm replies,

As I said, I haven't purchased all the programs, not even God has that much $$$$, I can't comment on Copy123 but as a rule, the super easy proggys have a reputation of fast and sloppy encoders.

For those who haven't tried Nero's Recode2 but have Nero sitting on your Desktop somewhere and use it for burning, you don't know what you're missing ! Try using Recode in the "Remake a DVD" Mode. You'll never, ever go back. It has the same "Start / Stop" feature that DVD Shrink has BUT you get to keep your menu. For those who just LOVE to put together different pieces of DVD's to make your own "Spoof" movie, this Baby "Rocks," and you guys who want to split your movies to 2 separate discs, pick your spot and slice it, where you like it.

Finally, I used Recode2 to radically trim 5 DVD's cutting out everything from the opening right up to the opening scene and at the end, when the screen fades to black, I cropped it right there. I then took all my trimmed movies over to DVD2One, and burned them all to 1 single-sided DVD. Yep, 5 DVD-5 movies on a single disc with unbelievable quality. A complete weekend of movies on just 1 disc. Using the same method, I put 4 VD-9 movies on a single disc also.

Now you can sea what having too much time on your hands can do - downright scary isn't it ?

I have a short guide for Recode2 on the ScubaPete site (in my sig) - give it a try and like always, let me know how you like it.

Burn on good guys, burn on . . . .

Cheers,

Pete

@gwendolin,

Here is a simple and basic piece on how to Recode using Nero Recode 2 and DVD Decypter.

01) open your C: drive or hard drive, click on File, New, Folder, and name it MyNewBackup_DVD, then [Enter] to save it, and make another folder as MyFinal_RecodeDVD, and [Enter] to save it.
02) now go inside both "MyNewBackup_DVD? and ?MyFinal_RecodeDVD,? click on File, New, Folder, and name it VIDEO_TS <---- yes, type in "exactly" like this and then hit Enter to save it. Now closed that.

((( to decrypt or rip a dvd movie using DVD Decrypter )))

01) put good quality media in "dvd burner" (use high quality media such as Taiyo Yuden (Fuji or Sony), Maxell (all Made In Japan only) and Verbatim (MCC003 & MCC004 only)
02) put original movie in "dvd rom drive or dvd burner? if you only have a dvd burner
03) open up DVD Decrypter, click on MODE, File F
04) "source" <----- from your dvd rom drive or your dvd burner
05) "destination" <----- browse to your New Folder that you created earlier aka "MYNEWBACKUP_DVD," and "VIDEO_TS" then click OK
06) now click on "DECRYPT" <--- it's the arrow next to the disc and burner icon. Sit back, relax, go smoke, run to a liquor store quick or go watch TV and wait until it's completed. (NOTE: make sure you don?t have any other programs running while ripping.)

((( to encode a movie or compress/shrink a movie using Nero Recode 2 )))

01) Open up Nero StartSmart, Nero Recode 2, click on "Recode an Entire DVD to DVD"
02) change your "Custom" settings to ?4350MB? and check on "Fit To Target" to avoid from burning/getting too close to the edge.
03) click on "Import DVD," and browse to your New Folder "MYNEWBACKUP_DVD," then to VIDEO_TS, then "OK". Recode should do a quick analysis now (approximatel 1 ? 2 mins), once its done you should have the whole completed movie with main title, audio, foreign audio or subtitles and extras.
04) NOTE: now you can remove any unwanted audio i.e. foreign audio or subtitles and extras, so your back up will be better on quality. If you don't want to remove anything, then just leave as it is and you'll have a "full disc back up", now click on "NEXT"
05) "Destination" <--- Hard Disk
06) "Target Folder" <--- browse to your folder: ?MyFinal_RecodeDVD,? and VIDEO_TS that you created earlier, then click on "BURN"<--- this process takes any where from 20 ? 30 mins depending on your computer specs.
07) NOTE: if you want super quality, then [check/tick] on either ?Advance analysis? (this will encode in 2 passes, but will improve the quality) or ?High Quality Mode" [slow recoding], then click on ?BURN?. Now sit back and relax, go smoke or watch TV.
07) once Recode completed the encoding process, you'll have at least something like 25 ? 35 VIDEO_TS small folders inside your "MyFinal_RecodeDVD" folder depends on how big is the movie.
08) now open up Nero Burning Rom, Nero Express or any of your desire burning programs and just back it up. That's it... easy as smoking. (this backing up process takes any where from 7 ? 10 mins depending on your speeds of media & computer specs.)
09) since you have the encode/compress dvd files inside your MyFinal_RecodeDVD already, now you can go to your MyNewBackup_DVD, and VIDEO_TS folder and delete all of them files because you won?t be needing them anymore.

Just another side note here, I highly recommend using genuine Yuden 8X DVD+R media only. With that being said, if your dvd burner is capable of changing the "book type" or "bitsetting" your DVD+R into a DVD-ROM format, then have Nero Burning Rom or Nero Express change it for you. Yes... DVD-ROM is the univeral format for all functional dvd players. This will be easier for any of your 1 1/2 or 2 years or older stand alone dvd player to read and or play.

((Here's how to book type using Nero Burning Rom))

01) open up Nero StartSmart, then click on Nero Burning Rom
02) EXIT out the "New Compilation" when it pops up
03) click on "Chooses A Recorder" (it's a small burner icon next to (I) and the arrow down)
04) click on "Options", then on "Book Type Settings", set to "Automatic" and click "OK" - that's it... easy as smoking. Now every burning using a DVD+R disc your Nero will automatically change the booktype into a DVD-ROM format.

((Here's how to book type using Nero Express))

01) open up Nero StartSmart, then Nero Express
02) now click on "Copy Entire Disc"
03) click on "Options", then on "Book Type Settings", set to "Automatic" and click "OK", then "Exit" out. That's it... easy as sipping on some Corona. Again, now every time when you burn, Nero will automatically change your DVD+R into a DVD-ROM in prior to the actual burning process.

Basically, you only need to set the "book type setting" on Nero once. So, if you book type it with Nero Burning Rom already then you don't need to do it again on Nero Express or vice versa.

Hi alkohol,

Good guide my friend ~

I would like to add just one small correction if I may ~

When suggesting Fuji as a media for use in backups, We can't forget to point out that, like Maxell, only the +R should be used. Both Maxell and Fuji offer -R's made in Taiwan and are, of a substandard quality while their +R's are, a most excellent discs.

The following is a fairly large selection of hi-quality media, which, over time, has proven to be of consistent quality and dependability for use in DVD video work.

The following Hi-quality discs meet our criteria for DVD video work: Phillips, Sony, TDK, HP, "Branded" RiData G03's, Maxell +R and Fuji +R?s BUT not the -R's as they cannot be trusted, Ritek G04 and G05's ( BUT not the 01's or the 02's), Verbatim DataLife, Verbatim DataLife Plus and media boasting "Advanced Metal AZO" BUT, it must say "Advanced METAL AZO", this indicates a superior dye and dye application on a good composite disc. Other discs such as Memorex, ?Great AZO?, and Princo are, in a word, crap. As a general rule, the majority of discs manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, Mitsubishi, RICOH are good bets. Only those Ritek named above are to be trusted the rest should be avoided. Look closely at those discs we recommended, you will see some dye types not listed by us. Those are poor risks even though the same company makes them.

Cheers,

Pete

hello all, great site. I purchased 123copydvd for $30.00. I was told it was a great program, and for the price.I was able to burn movies, able to play on computers; unable to play on my dvd players, namely Denon. I wasable to play on liton dvd recorder.I always use the brand dvd disc, memorex, maxell, fugi, I never have any issues with other software programs that copy dvd movies. 123copydvd( i find out they no tele #, no 24 hour tech support as stated on their box and their site and as well adverisements; their online never works; also there is no manual instruction book online or in the box.)

After several emails, they said there software does not support my burners; it is not on their list. What BS. How is the customer to know what burner is supported or not, to search for that info its finding a needle in a hay stack. In my opinion this software sucks big time. ( i'll stick with shrink/dvd decryter, dvdfab, and 321 studios) Can anyone provide some assistance. I would like to contact #, and if knows what is the story with 123copydvd. thanks in advancefor your help.

Hey Andyzeus, I use 123copyDVD, Ive looked on their site and my dvd drives werent on their list of supported drives but they work, ive got a phillips DVD8631 and a LG DVD-rom 8163 they both work fine, the only prob i have is the quality, if you try to copy the whole disk is will look shitty, i always use feature film only and i get rid of all the audio tracks i dont need like other languages or directors commentary, and id say about 9 out of 10 end up with same quality as the original, but i still use dvddecrypter/shrink for the ones that dont work with 123copydvd,

People trying to sell you something want your $$.$$ and thus will lie through their teeth to make a sale. Pple who have made the mistake of purchasing a crappy program LOVE company and don't mind misleading you so that they aren't alone.

As snotragg stated, the proggy has a low-end encoder and with such, will produce a poor quality backup. As you delete different sections on your original so that little OR no compression is required, the encoder and compression engine have very little to do and thus the backup will become more acceptable. Unfortunately, many movies are so large, they require compression, and thus your backups will become unacceptable. Spending your hard-earned money on a program you can use only sometimes is pretty silly when, with the spending of just $9.00 more, you could have purchased a decent program such as, CloneDVD2 ($39.99) and then had a program that you could use with any type of DVD and it would give you a quality backup, time after time.

We have all learned this same thing the hard way. I know of no one who began this who didn't purchase something we regretted. Our most common mistake was in the purchase of DVD XCopy which, a couple of years ago was the "Top Dog" in the backup market. Once we found DVD Shrink (FREE) and DVD Decrypter (FREE), we made the switch without a look back. Now, DVD XCopy has gone the way of the Do Do, defunct, out of date and out of business. As funny as it may seem, there are still unknowing youngsters who, see an ad for this proggy and buy it, un-working, unsupported and unable to even come close to the quality of those 2 FREE programs I just named.

Again, I know not where you got your information BUT, Memorex is at the very bottom of the DVD quality heap. As for Fuji and Maxell, only their +R discs are of the quality needed to backup DVD's. Fuji and Maxell -R discs should be avoided as their quality control is as non-existent as is Memorex's.

Sorry, I cannot. As our children love the Internet because they can "Hide" there and pretend to be other pple, unfortunately, so can unscrupulous companies who pander substandard software. Buying online from a reputable stores such as MertLine.com OR Newegg.com who stand behind their products and will issue refunds. Buying from larger retail stores who offer a 30-day refund OR paying with a major credit card are other suggestions for your next time purchase. You have our sympathies.

We are glad to sea you have discovered Shrink and DVDD. Should you also have Nero on board your PC, I suggest you try Recode2. An outstanding program, under used by most. Used with DVDD OR AnyDVD with Recode2 (or CloneDVD2), can standout to make a "hard to beat" combo which will serve you well for years to come.

All the best,

Pete
