I know there are plenty of threads about this already but....
I've been using shrink & decrypter to back up some of my kids dvds (they're brutal on the dvd's) with memorex dvd-r 8x 4.7gb with no problems. I bought a new 50 pack of maxell which won't work and then a ten pk of fujifilm which also won't (comes up medium not present) I had a couple of the memorex left so I used those again with no problems. Any suggestions for a newbie. I'm trying not to waste these dvd-r's. Buy more memorex?
Thanks in advance guys

Hi there,
Please provide us with a little more details.
What DVD Burner do you have ?
Do you have the latest firmware installed ?
- Maybe those new Maxell are not being recognised by your DVD Burner.
What software do you use to burn, DVD Decrypter ? (Burn an .ISO) ?
If you use Nero or VSO CopyToDVD, provide us with a Full LOG file, there's a lot we can see in there.
Maxell should be better than the Memorex, and FujiFilm pretty good.
VSO Inspector v1.1 --> http://www.vso-software.fr DVDInfoPro --> http://www.dvdinfopro.com
Can provide you info on your DVD Burner, and get the Media Code off those blanks.
From there we can help you search if you have the latest firmware and why it doesn't like those new media.

The drive is a philips dvd8421 came with my hp. As for the media i downloaded vso inspecter and it says no media inserted for both the fuji and maxell. I've been burning with decrypter to this point. Haven't done anything regarding firmware. was burning at max speed using memorex, and have tried every speed in between for the other two. Thanks for the point in the right direction.
Sorry if this double posts

Hi there,
Here's the link to the firmware for your burner:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?dlc=en&l...
Quote: Release Date: 2004-10-20 Version: 9H10
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software4/COL9264/pv-25051-1/SP26401.exe
This seems to be the latest firmware for your drive.
With VSO Inspector again, check what firmware is currently on your burner.

Hi there,
I didn't like VSO Inspector v1.0.9 because it flaged all EMPTY sectors (00 00 00 00 00) as bad.
That's wrong :)
Their latest version VSO Inspector v1.1 fixed all that.
Now it can scan all the sectors off the media, and don't bother with the empty ones.
There's also a new feature called File Scan.
It will open and read every file off the media, faking you are trying to copy from the media to your HD for example.
This way you are sure every sector of the media (Where written) is readable, and each file can be open individualy.
I am now a VSO man :)

Alright guys, once again thanks for all your help, but.......
I've been trying unsuccessfully all weekend to upgrade firmware. I download the upgrade burn it to cd-rw then restart as instructed. When i try to open the upgrade windows installer starts but I get an error message
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'RNENU.msi'in the box below.
The box has c:\hp\tmp\src\

I'm now officially lost. Any suggestions
