Hi everyone. :)
I've been reading a lot of information on PS2 modding lately. I'm fairly confident in my soldering ability and not afraid to install a modchip. I'm still not too familiar with all of the terminology and terms used, so please bare with me.
I mainly want my PS2 to be able to rip games to the hard drive (for faster loading times/no memory card), be able to run emulators, and I want to attempt to load Gentoo Linux onto it (I'm a C/C++ programmer).
I realize that there are various modchips that are all 'direct boot'. Are there any important differences between them? Or is it just personal preference/bias?
Also, some of my friends have modded Xboxes running something called XECUTER (some 'OS' based loosely on the Linux kernel as they claim) which lets them rip ISOs of DVDs to their hard drives, watch movies, run emulators for various systems, connect to it via FTP, and so on. Are there any of these 'operating systems' for the PS2? I'm assuming that there must be. I tried searching, but to no avail. (That led me to believe 'operating system' was not the correct term.)
I'm sorry for the newbie questions, but I am fairly new to modding and am interested in learning. I'm studying electrical engineering/software engineering in college, and hopefully I will be able to contribute back to the modding community someday.
My PS2 is a Version 9,SCPH-50001/N, DATE CODE: 3C.
I'll summarize my main questions to make it easier for those who reply:
1. What are the significant differences between all of the solder-on modchips?
2. Which mod chip would you recommend I get giving my situation/desires?
3. What is the correct term for the replacement 'operating systems'?
4. Which 'operating systems' would you recommend for my desired functions?
Also, please correct me on any terminology that I am not using correctly. Thanks if you're still reading this.
