when I use dvd shrink, all seems to go ok-it gets to 100% and starts the entire count over again. Once it goes through the 2nd time, the tray opens and it allows me to burn. Any ideas what's going on or adjustments i need to make??

The first time through is advanced analysis and the second is the actual encoding. You can uncheck advanced analysis in the quality settings window but I don't recommend unchecking it as it will affect the video quality.

Hello ripmayer:

I see several ways to interpret your question. Mort's answer is about the quick analyzation just after you insert the original disc and then encoding.

I am interpreting as this double as: analyzing/encoding. If this is the case,there is a tab on the backup options. This is after your quick analyzation,re-author if you desire. After that,you click on the backup tab. If your backup copy is going to be compressed,there is an option on the center tab. This tab is the "quality settings".Click on that quality setting tab. You'll see:Perform deep analysis on the top and Compress video with high quality adaptive error compensation.You have options on the adaptive error for max smoothness,max sharpness,and a couple others. If these boxes are ticked,they will cause the analyzation-and then slower encoding to your harddrive=take longer for the process.If these boxes are grayed out,no compression is used and won't have that option.

This may be where you are seeing DVD Shrink going to 100% on the analyzing, then 100% after the encoding, and spits out the original.

If this is the case,just untick those options. I only use them on highly compressed dvds because I mainly do main movie only.When shrink tells me my compression is below 80%,then I tend to use the maximum smoothness.

@movies27

Here is an article on deep analysis and Shrink, it will explain it for you

http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44797

I use it if the compression shows 85% and under.

I must add, I used to use the advanced tab but 99% of the time you won't see the difference.
Uncheck it and the time taken will more than half.

(I might be inclined to use it if I were shrinking some huge movie like any of the LOTR trilogy and particularly if I was gonna back-up the whole disc.)
Remember if you do like to back-up the whole disc you can alter the compression ratio for the main movie compared with the ratio of extras etc leaving more space for the main title.

movies27,

I'm very particular about my backups and never use shrink anymore for encoding. I use RB/CCE almost exclusively now but when I was useing shrink I not only used advanced analysis but also used max smoothness in quality enhancements.

Back to your question. Yes it does make a difference especially on big screen hdtv's (I have a 52" hdtv). You probably won't notice as much if you use movie only mode but the higher the compression the more you will notice the difference.

@saugmon

I guess I didn't make myself clear but I was talking about the same thing you said not the initial quick analysis. Being lazy as usual and trying to type as little as possible :)

My bad mort.I just use simple layman terms-LOL

Working the night shift turns my brain to mush!

I just used the max smoothness on Constantine.The cover bragged about its speacial features,what a waste.Oh well,still looked near original quality.My last pc would shut off when I used this enhancement-black screen or blue screen of death.

I really don't see any difference between the 2 on my 32" tv.

It's been a while since I used those enhancements,since my last piece of crap pc broke.If I used any of those adaptive error enhancements on that pc,it would shut off my pc with the black or blue screens during the analysis phase..It was ok without the enhancements-95% success-99%+ if it got to the burn phase,and never coastered any backups out when I burned on the fly-300+.

Hi Saugmon, Thanks for the input. The double encoding is just that. It's not showing analysis/encoding. Only encoding twice. When the encoding time runs out, it automatically starts to encode again with a new full time clock?? Why has it started doing this double encoding only recently?

Hi Mort81, Should it state that it is in advanced analysis the first time through or does it just show encoding and then encoding again the second time through?

The first time it displays 'Analysing' the second pass it displays 'Encoding'.

Hmm, try removing DVD Shrink in the control panel and then download it again.
