Please help. Not sure what the problem is. I've been using nero 6 and dvd shrink 3.2 for about a year and had no problems. Great quality movies. I had to reformat my hard drive and re-install the dvd softwares and now the quality of my backups are bad. Specifically, at random points in the movies the picture will skip and get "blocky". It last for a couple seconds and then it plays fine for a while, then does it again. I never use my computer when I'm actually burning the disc, but I do minimize the encode/decryption process and open other programs on the computer. Should I not do this? As for settings, I have the deep analysis option checked and have the 'compress' option set at default (sharp).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jim

Did you happen to swith your blank DVD media? If not just make sure everything is up to date drivers/software on your system. Check what spped you are burning at with Nero when you reloaded it may be burning at max speed. Also if this is happening more towards the end of your movies try adjusting the target size down in Shrink to something like 4300mb.

Cheers

I didn't switch my media. I've been using ritek 8x DVD-R media and have had good luck with them until just recently. The problem doesn't occur on every disk I burn. Just the last two, Million Dollar Baby and Constantine. The playback is fine until about 3/4 of the way through the movie then it start skipping and "blocking". It usually lasts for a couple seconds, skips a few seconds of the movie, then continues on fine. They never fully crap out and stop playing. I had by settings to burn at max (8X), but I'll try slowing to 4X and see if that helps. If it was a problem that happened on every disk I burned, it would be easier to solve.

Thanks for your help!

Yeah those Ritek G05's have been known to be doddgy it wouldn't surprise me if you problems with some here and there. Slowing down the burn speed should help out a lot though.

I re-burned Constantine and Million Dollar Baby today. I did it at 4X instead of 8X and had the deep analysis option enabled (hadn't used that in the past). The discs play fine, no skipping or blocking. The slower speed appears to have done the trick. I'm just about to the point where I need to order more dvd media. I usually get the 8X, but since I'll be burning at a slower speed from now on, I think I'll get some 4X media (save a few bucks too). I was unaware that burn speed had such an effect on the quality of playback. Thanks for your help! Jim

It really has a bigger effect when it isn't very good media, but that also shows even with good media you will still get better results burning at slower speeds.

Cheers m8
