Hi, this is actually a simple question, but just written with a lot of detail for your fine tuned nit picking pleasure, so bare with me here! :)

I recently purchased a LG GSA-4163B due too many good reviews and recommendations. I also purchased a supposedly genuine unbranded (purple die)100 Spindle of Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-Rs. (The Base is bigger at the bottom than at the top, but I cant find a ?Made in Japan? label anywhere like some people have reported)

All purchased from www.SVP.co.uk a few days ago. I decided to buy from them due to many positive reviews from people on the internet saying that they do indeed sell genuine TY media?

However, I?m wondering if you could help me work out why I?m getting (what I consider) inferior K-probe scan results from my burns on my Sony CRX320E (Rebadged LiteOn SOHC-5232K combo-drive, with the latest official Sony NYK5 firmware)

I'm hoping its just the drive I'm using to scan. I realise that a proper LiteOn DVD-Writer is better for doing K-Probe scans but unfortunately I do not have one, neither does anyone else I know, so sorry :(

I?ve tested about 6 discs so far from this spindle, with various types of data at a 4X burn speed which is the next speed-step down from what these disks are certified to burn at safely. (8X)

The first 3 disks where burned using the drives A104 firmware, and the latter 3 disks were burned with the newest A105. (Both were official LG firmware, not moded)

It appears that updating the firmware had no effect. All the 6 scans have pretty much identical results.

I?ve run the discs through all of the popular media identifying software and they all report the MID as being: TYG02

Ok so here is what every one of my scans look like on average... these kind of ranges:

My system specifications are as follows if they help:

Windows XP Pro + SP2
ASUS P4C800-E Motherboard
Pentium4 3.4Ghz
2GB - PC3200 DDR RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT
.

Hehe yeah, I remember reading over that thread when I was doing research into what drive and media I was going to get. However, I?ll give it another look over.

I'm still curious though? in your opinion, should I be worried about the results in my test above (for a genuine TY 8X disk), or is it likely that my combo drive is throwing the results off?

My PI rates seem to be so-so and sort of close to yours, acceptable, but its the PIF errors that are worrying me. :(

Every PIF graph I?ve seen of good quality media on the internet seems to be single spikes now and again of 2 ? 5. Mine seems to be a constant blocks of 5!

Somethings nagging me inside though, that I?m ok (I hope!)

@Arizent.
Are your scans reliable?
Inasmuch as they mirror the scans that I see from my (TY0G1) purchased in Canada in a bulk pack.
Are they the scans that you would expect to see from the acclaimed manufacturer?
Hardly.
Yet until more people actually scan their media ( as opposed to saying 'I have no problem burning') and let us know the results, we are only guessing.
We can't all have the wrong drive/software/firmware/ram/processor and I guess that only time will tell whether the discs that I have burned today, are still playable a year from now.

I tried using Prassi's / TX?s burning software called ?ONES? which was recommended to me on another forum for its better UDF ability and here are my results so far, burned at 4X like the others:

Better, but I?m still not totally happy yet. What do you think?

Also any other suggestions for what could be going on here or alternative burning software with a good writing ability, please do tell!

@Creaky B.
Yes I have seen the scans from this link and accept that they do show, in an accurate way, the variation on different grades of media.
My results show the same variation, but inverted.
The 'good' media scans poorly.The 'shit','crap','rubbish', media scans better.
Point to note: my burner lists most of the good,bad,ugly dvd media as suitable for burning.

@Arizent.
I agree the scans are better, but did you switch burning software?
The start of the thread was to verify that those TY's were the real McCoy and that good TY's output better burns.
To me, a test has to be consistent in the software and hardware used to get the goods- i.e to compare TY to 'other' using the hardware I have and the software that most use (Nero?).
That way, I expect to see scans from my 'genuine' TY's that outclass 'optodisc' and 'maxell', but my experience with the discs I purchased does not support that contention.
I'm still scratching my head over my results.
I either have 'bad' genuine TY or bad fake TY or a burner which burns good on those brands which are derided in this forum and burns poorly on the 'best'!!!

@attar

I started this topic as a general troubleshooting question really. Not specifically questioning only the quality of TY discs.

I'm trying to work out which out of my: TY discs, DVD-Burner or CD-RW combo-drive is the "weakest link" in all this.

However, anyone is welcome to contribute anything. :)

I accept your (gentle) rebuke, but, if you'll forgive my temerity, the topic is " Are these reliable TY scan results?",and it is in the DVD... Media forum, so perhaps I can be forgiven? ;)

Hehe, yes you?re right. Sorry if it seemed I was having a subtle stab or anything.

I mainly posted it in the media forum, as I wasn?t quite sure were to put as I?m not sure weather it?s the discs or my drives that are messing me around :)

How about a scan of a non-Ty disc to compare (from the same burner/software, of course)
Show me yours.I'll show you mine :)

What is the code on the TY disc's hub. Should say something like TG001162 or a similar variation of that. As for the scans I use Nero's tools "Disc Qualtiy Check" and my TY's generally scan much better than the ones you show. Very rarely do I have a point above 2 PIF with PIF totals generally between 20 to 100 or so. My PI Average is usually ~1.5. A little more info on your discs could help rule them out(inner hub code, place of purchase).

The place of purchase can be found in my first post, and the holographic like code from the inner part of each disc reads: GG000103

If that?s any help :)

Just for kicks, heres how annoying this whole DVD-R media / Drive fiasco is:

Here?s a disk I burned last night at 4X

--------------------------------------------------

Here is the SAME disk scanned under the same conditions the next day:

Wounderfully reassuring, I?m sure you?ll agree?. Yeah right :)

i don't get too caught up in the whole PIF scan thing myself, i only check the odd disc when i suspect i've wrecked a burn due to multi-tasking

@Creaky:
I just bought 100 MCC-004 Verbs at Best Buy for 40.00. I also got the new Benq 1640, 79.99 at Circuit City they had the 1620 Pro for 49.99. I am going to scan some discs with 1640 as soon as I update the firmware. I cant believe a new drive that only out a week in the US has old firmware already. This drive is supposed to burn 4.3 gig in 5.17 sec with a perfect curve. We will see.

Arizent---The code is good, my TYG02's the hub code is GG000102. These TY's for me are the best according to Nero's Disc Quality Scans. I have had TOTAL PI Failures @ 7 on the low side and almost always under 100 TOTAL (unless multitasking in my early burning days). I would have to say the disc you have are 100% REAL. What kind of scans do you get on other medias....Verb's Riteks, etc...

You can't rely on scans done with a cd burner or dvd-rom. The scans will be not be accurate whatsoever. The scans MUST be done with a DVD burner to achieve usable results. :)

When I compare my bulk-pack TY against Verbatim (MCC) or Maxell, with Nero CDSpeed, the Verb and Max show the manufacturers name ie MCC or Maxell, the "TY" does not show a manufacturer.
And to repeat my refrain, these "TY" scan lousy compared to any other in my collection.

Hey guys, I too use TY media(which I'm pretty sure is real). When I scan a burned disk with Kprobe or DVDInfoPro on my Lite On, I get very good rsults. However, when I try to scan the same disc with DVDInfoPro on my Pioneer, it would seem as the disc is not even worth of being frisbee material. Don't rely on these scas too much. If you want, when I get home tonight, I will post a scan of what I believe to be real TY media...

@skidme, i too don't worry too much about the whole scanning lark (i did experiment with it in 1st link in my sig). for TY discs you'll have codes you can check around the inner hub, such as akyllonen mentioned up the page..
