Just picked up two spindles. 100 good quality discs for under 40 bucks ain't bad. With the 20 Verbatim and the other 25 Maxell I got last Friday I might be good for awhile. Now, I just have to sneak them in the house without my wife seeing them;p)BTW, they are Made in Taiwan but I don't expect to have any problems with them. A had to burn the last batch that I got from Office Depot at 4x instead of 8x but that's a small inconvenience in the grand scheme...

I keep all of mine at 4x. Slow and steady. Those maxell 8x's will only let me burn 12x max!

I just got some Fuji +8x's made by taiyo yuden. 16x is available on my burn speeds with these babies..

16x was purely accidental. This new 8x media, you gotta make sure you don't have it set on max.Sony and Fuji +8x is the only ones to allow me that fast. All other +8x media, only 12x max.
I still keep it at 4x,and on my full hub printable media-2.4x.

jlp666: Get some dash format for your pioneer dvr 104. From what I have seen,it is dash format only. The other atapi drive could be a benq.

This is what I found on that pioneer:

Here's one of several sites I found the Atapi drive:

http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=251654

What firmware do you have on that atapi drive? It may need updated.

Maxell is a top notch media, so you can't go wrong with that - especially if it's "MADE IN JAPAN". Honestly, I dig both TY (including genuine TY, "Fuji +R and Sony +R made in japan by Taiyo") and Maxell equally.

gotta say that the Maxell japanese ones are great for me too~ i might not have used them as much as the other members here, namely saugmon, but i have used about 200 of them :) and to reiterate on what i said/posted earlier, the Ritek G05s for ME PERSONALLY, have been great too~ :)

maxell is a reliable brand for the most part, just be careful on the few that saugmon mentioned earlier...

Hello Kinza,
Quote:
I love Maxell media. I only got a 15 pack but they were great, *sobs in background*. The only useful purchase from Wal-Mart I have ever made.
You mean you never bought underwear at Waly World and enjoyed them ?
HAHAHAHA

I bought 25 x DVD-R Maxell from FutureShop (Media ID: MXL RG03)
and just for testing, I burned 2 of them at 8x and they were both 100% error free. I was suprised, since I burn everthing at 2x because I do not have quality media.

After looking at this page: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

I noticed those Maxell were 1st Class Media, no wonder they worked at 8x :)

I just placed my 1st order of Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 4x from http://www.blankmedia.ca

I will get them next week, and will now burn at 4x with confidence.

Hello gear79,They must have opened up another tunnel down there in texas!
Those latin american maxells haven't migrated up here "around columbus ohio" yet. I just checked my local super walmart and the only japanese maxells they had were the full hub printables. The other plus and dash r's and rw's were all made in taiwan-ritek media.I checked spindles and jewel packs.

Even their sony plus 1x-8x were taiwanese, not the taiyo yudens like staples have just across the street. Looks like walmart ditched their ILO media, but still have the 100 pack spindles of Imation-way too pricey-probably cmags.

I was wanting to pick up a pack of them. I've got no issues with cmags as long as they are burned at 2.4x. Seeing as how they are made in latin america,it may be an even worse manufacturer- UGH!

I'd love to see that MID code on them. Also a pie/pif scan.

yup, i am 99% sure of it.......... see, this is how i happened to find out. i was helping an elderly man (i say that, cuz he was way older then me) he was looking for dvd cases, so i helped him out, then he picked up a pack of memorex plus format, asked him what he was doing and said was making copies of dvds using his new vcr to dvd recorder.......etc.etc.... anyway...... i told him if abything to buy the maxells and to look at the labels...well, to my astonishment... it said right there...'made in latin america'
i grinned at the ole man, and told him to hit up best buy for the fuji's they had for 9.99 a 25 pack... he took his cases and walked away........ confused he was, i'm sure, but i got his noodle workin.
i will try to swing out there tomorrow and take a pic with my phone, then i will try to put it up first, unless i just buy the pack, we will see.

I was in Office Depot today and noticed that they had the 25 packs of Maxell DVD+R that are made in Japan. The last couple of times that they have had the 50 packs on sale they were made in Taiwan. Of course, they were not on sale today!

You did that old man a favor and pointed him in the right way. I started out using memorex in my tv burner and had quite a bit of trouble with them. That's why I stick with the plus format, because I'm always trying out different stuff for that recorder also. It does love the verbatim data life plus +8x and it's only a 4x speed rated recorder.

considering this man was told by a b/b employes, he could record from vhs to dvd on any blank disk, i remembered another format, i just learned the other day on how to use data format for some of my downloads.... works really well, using nero burning rom and the data dvd function..
(and i know this is not related to topic) but is there a difference in video quality using data vs. re-encoding d/l movies?
and is it possible to re-encode to multi-channel format from a 2 channel (d/l) they are just in stereo...

Ha! Ha! not funny !the tiny print they put on the spindles & jewel boxes might as well be chinese cause if I can't read it ,it makes about as much sense to me! Anyways gear79 my friend thanks for the info. Good luck Peace & Happy Burning !

Het ,Hey , Hey !!!the gangs all here did a little research on the Maxell's from latin america ! I emailed Maxell and they have replied and here is their reply " Mr. bigtoxy69-Thank you for contacting Maxell Support.

Looking at the product packaging at our office, I see 4 lines on the
packaging mention locations.

Three of those locations are merely Maxell office locations.

"MAXELL CORPORATION OF AMERICA New Jersey, USA"
"MAXELL CANADA Concord, ON Canada"
"MAXELL LATIN AMERICA Panama City, Panama"

Those three above are merely locations where we have major offices. We
also have offices in Singapore, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, etc...
http://www.maxell.com/ <http://www.maxell.com/>
Underneath those three lines, there should be a line that either says
"Made in Japan" or "Made in Taiwan."

Please let us know if you are seeing something else stated for the
"Made in xxxx" line than the two mentioned above and please let us know
what all 4 lines say.

Again, thank you for contacting Maxell.
Christopher S.

Their words not mine hope this enlightens everyone about this situation ! Now if only they would put the picture of Charo In a thong back on the Dvd Cases ! LOL!!!!! peace and Happy Burning!

Another small note about Maxell DVD media . I was out and about yesterday ! OOT & ABOOT for our Canadian readers LOL! just kidding !and I was at a local Walgreens (Drtugstore) and as I am now almost compelled to do I meandered over to the Electronics/photo section of rhis store and noticed that they had a selection of Maxell DVD media both + & - and lo and behold almost all of it was made in japan! I shop varoius locations of Walgreens stores in my area and some have Japan Maxells some taiwan some both ! But I have made a mental note of this store for future sales! Perhaps the ones this store has are older or newer stock than the other locations have I'm not sure the packaging doe'snt appear to be beat up yet so maybe they're new ! They have 10pks. 15pks. & 30pks. if I recollect right! Anyway thought that uou'd eant to know Inquiring minds and all that! peace & happy burning!

BIGTOXY69: I have burned many maxells from all over the place-when it goes on sale.3/5/10 pack 4x jewel cases=All japanese in the dash format and ricohjpn-01 in the +4x. But reports of maxell using c-mags on either their 3 or 5 pack dash, not sure of the speed.

All the maxell 8x media I ran into: Taiwanese are riteks for both formats.Japanese dash 8x are Mxl-rg03 and japanese +8x are Hitachi-002-00.

I usually get them at office depot or staples.Office depot always switches them around.1 week the japanese discs are on sale,2 weeks later all they have is the taiwanese. Staples haven't had them on sale for several months, but they carry the fuji's now that are japanese!

Walmart same way, both sony and maxells all mixed together. If staples only has the taiwanese sony +1x-8x on sale,I take the flyer across the street and sort through walmarts sony +1x-8x media.

I don't have a single complaint from any of those brands regardless if they made in japan or taiwan. All perform identical.I just try to make sure they are the japanese ones, for the same price.
