I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, but here it goes. Beside the fact I've had problems burning for awhile...Now, I can burn DVD's to my Sony DVD+R's, but they will only play in my computer. Is this a setting issue with DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter?

Most playback problems on standalones due to the use of poor quality media - Sony media while not the greatest should be OK.

Other causes can include burning too fast (max 4X recommended) or the use of labels on burnt DVDs.

It is not a setting issue with Shrink or Decrypter.

Some standalones are finicky with the media they will playback - I have found el cheapo Chinese players much more versatile as to what they will playback compared to more expensive name brands.

Try some different media (e.g. Verbatim, Ritek or TYs) - also try some - format media.

Try playing your burnt DVDs on a selection of other standalones (friends etc.)

i had that problem to. when i burned my first dvd i almost freaked out because it only wanted to play on my pc and not my tv.

well here's the solution to your program. you'll probobly have burned the dvd on a DVD+R.
what you need is a DVD-R.
most dvd players can only read self writen - dvd's.

so run to shop and get some - dvd, burn and play.
it took me a while to discover but now things go well :)

Good luck

theresa24,

What brand and model is your dvdrw? Some burners are capable of booktyping +r/rw media to dvd-rom making them the most compatable format for stand-alone dvd players. Dvd-rom is most compatable followed by dvd-r then dvd+r. Try your burned discs in some other players. I doubt it is your media, sony is usually pretty good stuff and about 3rd on my list after verbatum and taiyo yuden. I put them in a tie for 3rd with maxell.

I tried Philips DVD+RW's and those seem to work fine on my JVC XV-N5 stand alone. I looked up my DVD player and it seems to be fine. I'm going to try other stand alones though. I bought Sony DVD-R DVD's so I'll see if those work as well.
My burner: HL-DT-ST-DVDRAM GSA-4040B its a multi recorder I just don't know who the manufactor is.

Thanks for everyone's responses!!

What speed are these sony dash dvd's?

I've found the better manufacturers are on the 1x-8x media. The 4x and 1x-4x performed a lot worse. Some of those dash 1x-4x and 4x are made in austria. Sony likes to use the same codes on media from different countries, usually on the dash format.
Examples sony04d1, I found both taiwan and austria making media with that code.Sony08D1,Made in both japan and taiwan.

That appears to be a LG burner which is bitsetting capable. I would definitely booktype your +r/rw media to dvd-rom making them the most compatable format for stand-alone dvd players. You might as well check your f/w for the most current vs too. The current f/w is A114. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1628

Thank you so much for all your replies! I tried to play my burned Sony DVD+R's on other stand alones, but they don't work. I haven't tried the Sony DVD-R DVD's, which are 1x-8x, yet, too afraid to open another brand new pack. But, I will, I'm too determined to get everything working right again. Still, the Philips DVD+RW's work, but since they are RW's the quality isn't great, and they're expensive. Next, I will try Creaky and Mort81's suggestions. Again, thank you all for your help.
Oh yeah, thought I'd mention that the Sony DVD+R's have been on sale at Best Buy at $19.99 for a 50 pack for awhile now. Although, I am having burn problems with them now they did work for awhile....

I to am having the same problem that Theresa has had....I've tried two types of different media- tdk DVD-R and philips DVD+RW yet neither of them are playing on my dvd player or my ps2 yet they play on here.

Any suggestions? I'm not 'amazingly skilled' on here either so if you can help I'd appreciate it if the answer was in simple form. thanks for your help

Doyle05,

Use this free proggy and give us the manufacturer and ID of both makes of your discs. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Some stand-alone dvd players can be finicky about playing rw media. Also what speed are you burning at?

I would 1st suggest trying some good quality media probably DVD-R. Verbatum and taiyo yuden are top notch and most recommended here. I like verbatum DVD+R booktyped dvd-rom. Dvd-rom is the most compatable format followed by DVD-R and then DVD+R.

Another thing you could try is booktyping some good quality DVD+R media to dvd-rom. Your NEC can not do this without flashing it with modified f/w or mad dog f/w. This could even make your dvd+rw's compatable with your dvd player and PS2.

A lot of compression can sometimes cause playback issues as well. What proggy's are you useing? What movie is it? How much are you having to compress? Have you tried backing up movie only?

Hi Creaky!

Yes, I was able to get Nero working again by doing the .15a update. Weird. I was able to burn a couple of DVD's after all. Afterwards, some would burn and not play on computer, or not burn at all. Well, actually, sometimes the Nero Info Tool, would say that it did burn. Then I started trying the DVD+RW's and they worked. Now, I'm going to try yours and Mort81's suggestions.

Hi Again,
Well, I read everything. And I'm still unsure of the type of drive I have the last Firmware version is A106, that was updated. When I went to Firware Index, it couldn't locate my HL-DT-ST-DVDRAM GSA-4040B for an update. I'm just a little nervous downloading the A114 since it said doing the wrong thing can crash my hard drive. How else can I find out the manufactor's name?

Thank you all!

@theresa24 - use Nero's info-tool, click on 'drives' tab (make sure to select the correct drive) and the firmware version is there. didn't we do this in one of your other threads though ?

yeah, we did do the whole Nero-Info thing, and it started to work for a while. Then it stopped so I thought it was the settings that I had Decryptor and/or Shrink on. I've tested the burner and its fine. Gateway won't tell me the manufactor name since its an OEM. Which, I understand. Maybe its someone trying to tell me to buy a new burner or DVD player :)
Well, I'm going to try the Sony DVD-R's now and see what happens. Thank you all for your help. I really appreciate it!!!

IMO thats pretty low of gateway. How are you supposed to update your f/w? Device manager won't tell you the make of your drive?

Creaky, thank you for adding that link to my other thread. I never thought about closing it that way. I appreciate that! Gateway actually came through today and told me the name of my manufacture! Well, Mort81 you were right! It?s Hitachi-LG Data Storage; also the tech said there were no firmware updates for it. I?m just glad they told me! And Device Manager only said that it?s a standard CD/DVD Drive.
Ok, I burned ?Million Dollar? to a Philips DVD+RW, it played on my stand alone after I turned it off and on a couple of times. Then, I went back to some of my Sony DVD+R's that I tried to burn on and they will not play on anything. Is it possible this particular pack of Sony DVD+R?s are bad? Now, those are from two different packs, bought at different times. But the problem started when I tried to burn with them. My stand-alone will play previously burned Sony DVD+R?s that came from another package. Should I exchange my Sony DVD-R?s for Verbatim?
The only reason I believe my burner is fine, is because it passed all of the tests that my computer comes with. Can a virus cause this kind of problem?

Once, again thank you all for your help! ~theresa24
