Hi all,
my problem is regarding a safe brand/media to back up some of the files on my hard drive. My HD is nearing full and i was always planning to just put my stuff on dvd and that would sort it out. However, some stuff i had on a couple of imitaion dvd-rw seem to not be accesible anymore, not just on my machine either. Is this typical to dvd-rw but not to dvd-r, or to both?
The blank media i was planning to use are "Verbatim DVD-R for recording 4.7gb 4x certified", they were bought in a spindle pack. The stuff i will be putting on them will be alot of video (video files, avi mpg divx etc), as well as data, games etc, also dvds with video and data, music etc mixed.
I've heard verbatim discs are good but ive also heard imitation are good but now the data i put on them seems to be irretrievable. I need the data to be safely accesible for life if possible, if not at least 5-10 years.
Also i currently store the dvds in paper sleeves, is this advisable? I keep them out of direct sunlight, but is in the dark best? Any and all storage tips for longevity welcome.

Thanks for reading!

Truly...you can't really go wrong with some verbatims, unless they're fake ones. They should hold up fine, but I would have no idea for how long...Since discs like this haven't been around very long, they haven't had the test of time yet. As for the whole paper sleeve thing, I cant see a problem with that, unless it's sand paper:P I noticed you said you keep them away from sunlight...That usually helps, and yes, DVD-RW are a much less reliable source than DVD-R, but hey, they're rewritable! Sorry for my stupidity...

Verbatim data life plus 8x's in either format, are some very good media. They feature the metal azo dye. These are Verbatim DLP for short. These are made by Mitsubishi.

Verbatim also has the data life/media life/and digital movie quality to list a few. These are pretty good. It's easy to get the data life and the data life plus mixed up.Some of these are made by mitsubishi and some are made by ricohjpn.Reports of cmagnetics are on some of the data life's.Cmags, for short, are a crappier manufacturer and noted for short life spans!

That's the hard part about dvd media,so many manufacturers making media with the same brand name.

Imation may have once been pretty good, but times have changed. Not highly recommended!

Get some genuine taiyo yuden from supermediastore, meritline, or rima.com for some of the best. Not bad prices either! They make media for other brand names, but the genuine ty's are all made in Japan!

If you buy it locally, like I do, Look for made in japan on the wrappers. Fuji/Maxell/Tdk/and Sony 1x-8x has media produced in japan and taiwan.Get the japanese ones that I just listed.Taiyo Yuden produces some of the media for these brand names. Some of TDK'S plus format, taiwanese media are cmags.

Paper sleeves should be no problem. I heard many members hanging them vertically, not horizontally when they store them.I use the full size single/double/in the thin and regular size cases. Many members also prefer the larger binders.

i'll wholeheartedly plug the Verbatims as long as they're datalifeplus. Imation are indeed something to avoid.

??? What I recommend doing if you really really value the data that you're backing up is to make two copies using two different brands of DVD. Personally I'd use Verbatim? and Japanese made Sony?. Store them in different DVD albums in different locations ???

   ? Just my 2ą worth ?

Thanks for everyones reply,

My Verbatims dont say Data Life Plus on the disc, all that is written on the disc is what i put in inverted commas at the start of this thread.

In the middle of the disc still on the blue bit is the code:

ZC6134-DVR-H47C

And right in the very centre of the disc on the inner most transparent plastic part is this code:

4095E3122-07631B03

These and the info in the first thread is all the written information on the disc. Would these be alright or are they not reccomended for my task.

Thanks again.

as creaky suggested, please run a media ID coding program on them...ALL my Verbatims have a "ZD" coding, not the ZC you mentioned...while i never claim to know everything about authentic Verbatims, that is just the info from MINE~ i can verify for Taiyo Yuden, but Verbatims that's a different story~ :)

mine reads as follows: ZD1321-DVR-X47B

let us know~

Anyone know anything about this media in regards to my original question?

Would much appreciate if someone who knows what they're talking about would reply.

Thanks!

I don't know if I fit that description, and with that remark you are lucky you got a reply.

:) agreed w/ arniebear, that remark, depending on HOW you read it, could imply that you are saying EVERYONE else that replied has no merit in answering your question...i for one do know a thing or 2 about Verbatim, but, not as extensively as i do with Taiyo Yuden...

i keep all my blank media in the dark, no direct sunlight and most of them in the BOX they came in when shipped from the online retailer that i purchased them from...

better watch how you phrase things in the future LDee as some members are not as forgiving and could take your comment as being quite rude~ :)

I was referring to the fact that I know little about the subject.

I would have used more careful language if I knew people would pick me up on it in such a defensive manner.

If one observes the thread, i was asked to post media info, did so, and had not recieved a reply after that. Then posted to try to get a reply. In that post is where the offending material was, to me it seems quite odd that i would be referring to anyone else other than myself, considering no other member had posted inbetween. Also, why would i be disrespectful to a whole bunch of strangers that had gone out of their way to help me for no apparent gain, isnt it more likely that i was referring to myself when looking at it this way also.

I agree with kivory666 that it depends on how you read it. Further more, it depends on what you expect people to behave like when faced with an ambiguous statement. I guess people expect negativity and arrogance, who can blame them when you look in our societies. However this creates a negative feedback loop which is undesirable so should be avioded if reasonably possible.

As for wether i should watch how i pharse things in future, i think that is open to debate, so i dont know if its helpful or not to suggest one "watches" how they interpret data?

Thanks for the links and suggestions, once again the members of this forum help me out!

no worries...everyone evaluates and perceives things differently, it's difficult sometimes when you read a post or comment w/ no backing emotion...naturally, it's open to debate, but AD is not about arguing or debate, it's about helping each other w/ issues that are pc/program/hardware related :)

hope i answered your question regarding how to store them... :) paper sleeves is fine, and keep them out of direct sunlight...i personally keep my backups in a binder type case w/ sleeves that fit 4 on a page...store those binders upright as well.
