Probably it's some other process on your PC is taking too much resources. Open Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del) and see what happens.

Go to the device manager and see if drive is in DMA or PIO mode. Needs to be DMA.
If in PIO mode, remove that channel in device manager and then reboot. Windows will put it back in DMA.

firstly about task manager, i had that problem for ages and stumbled across the solution myself.
double click just to the left of the disconnect button on the grey area and that should solve that problem.

secondly:

To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager

1.Open Device Manager.

2.Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

3.Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

4.In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only."

Do a virus scan, and rid your computer of spyware, using programs like AdAware, Spybot, and Spy Sweeper. AdAware and Spybot have free versions, but IMHO, Webroot's Spy Sweeper is better.
