Archos AV400 questions!

When I plug my av400 into my PC, then try to watch a video from it in RealOne or Windows Media, only the sound plays and it says there is an error downloading the codec; this is not to serious because i can watch them on the player, but how can i edit the movie (eg, chop some off the end)?

How can i use the file format i have on the player, and through my computer put this .avi on a dvd-r, aswell?
