what type of media are you using? and are you able to watch the disc in p.c.? most likely media compatability issues.
this is a link for a very useful (free) app to identify the true nature of your media try it out if you have any questions post your results back here

uh-ohh jinx (media is fine) that has alway's been a bad omen what is the m.i.d.

anyway's please give info on method used did you change any of the defaults during compression

b also do you store your files on your hd the only time I had any prob's w/ the dynamic duo (dvdd, dvds) was once when I had so many titles on my hd that it had to break up the files when storing them(i still had 80+free gig's) make sure you have ample space on hd and de-frag often

I'm not sure about The forgotten, But defenitely on The Grudge- Columbia pictures had some sort of encryption that screwed up my copy and many other members copies of that movie. Here's how I fixed that issue:

Do your normal process, but reauthor for main movie only in DVD Shrink if you haven't. I'm not sure how this movie did for entire disc.

Set the start frame in DVD Shrink just past the columbia trademark of "Lady Liberty".It's only a second or 2 at the beginning. Then you can resume your process. There's something screwy about that movie.

From now on,all the columbia pictures I back up I will cut out the lady liberty trademark.I learned my lesson the first time,LOL

I may have cut it out on The Forgotten. Usually I cut out some of the opening and ending credits on most of my backups to reduce compression and forgot to do it on The grudge.

Not until after seeing 20 million posts on the same issue that it was encryption related.

Good Luck!

@saugmon both title's did fine w/ just dvdd & dvds 4 me that is why I was leaning on the media Neither seemed to have anything special on them and I was using the same method I have since the dawn of time what problems did you inccur?

That particular backup: The Grudge-region 1-Main movie only, seemed to be normal on the process of backing it up to my hard drive and burning. When I put that first backup copy in my sony dvp-ns325 stand alone,it started making noises and wouldn't play. That sony plays everything off all 5 pc burners and my tv home burner.
There was something wrong with it. It was on a new maxell -8x mxl-rg03 gold top disc,so at first I thought it was the media.I made another copy on another sony +1x-8x,but this time I cut out lady liberty icon at the beginning-just like I do on the majority of my compressed backups.
After a few days, the same questions about that exact same playback issue were being posted over and over again here at AD. I told them to cut out that trademark and all was ok.

I8nights, If it was any other movie besides The grudge,I would say it was the media. If rbeyer backed his copy with main movie only, that would be the first thing to check out.All columbia releases ever since then,I cut that liberty trademark out.

I still have nightmares between that backup and Resident evil Apocalypse, LOL!

Consider yourself one of the few lucky ones because both of these movies have exactly the problem Saugman has described you have to edit the start point in Shrink for them to work. I8nights have you played your copy's since you backed tham up. Others have said they backed up fine which they do appear to until you try watching them. I believe the movie the Forgotten was also like this if I remember right :-)

Cheers

the copies played w/out flaw on my x-box and I also made a copy 4 a friend to borrow and he said it played flawlessly. I remember thinking something was up the first time I watched it due to the pixelation they put in the opening frame (lady liberty) but this was in the original I use nothing but maxell (ritek g-05's) for the past six months and I will watch my copy tonight to see but it was'nt more thatn a month ago I viewed it and as I am fairly new and extremely curious I usually watch pretty intensly for flaws (even in zoom) I don't recall any other prob's
but lucky! well I guess every week some one has a problem w/ this or that on a new release and no prob's 4 me hell I even got dvd-rb up and running w/out incident and then the next day someone mentioned the installer. hmmmm???? I guess lucky is just how you look at it.
just found the file on my hd and reburned it plays flawlessly only thought is maybe it was deep analysis have done this since like my 2nd back up if I remember right this was about the time everybody started to get bad presses. really don't know also about the time dvdd was last up-dated if I remember right I think I got the update the day it was released.

I also had no problem with these movies the way I normally back up which is main movie only. Where people are running into problems is when they are doing the whole disk, but it can be done as explained above. :-)

P.S. I haven't had a problem myself with any movie doing just the main movie. That really doesnt help the hundreds of others who are having a problem with these movies though by just saying I did it fine.. There are far to many posts here on AD of these movies being a problem for it to just be strictly user error... :-)

Cheers

@ bbmayo my reply was not ot be down-grading all appologies if it was taken that way btw It might however be considered selfish because I continued this conversation just 4 my own curiousity you will never see me on these forums saying is there something else I can try alot of times I have already found a back-door to get the job done but post a problem just for the pure knowledge.
I guess I'm that cat that curiousity just could not kill (quickly becoming my catch phrase)
maybe I try to help the way I would want to be helped just dig deep to find the prob. yea most of mine are user error but I would rather know than cloud my hd with yet another program I have several.

anyway's sorry if I created any confusion or grief

btw on closer inspection in the beginning scene's of grudge(full movie) I did hear the x-box trying a little harder to read the disc but played w/out a hitch is this in any way harmful to my player?

@ I8nights

My replies were not directed towards anyone and I don't take anything personal so no apologies needed :-) My last comments were just a general statement, but now that I read them a little closer it looks like they could have been taken as being directed towards a particular post, but that was not my intensions at all. I am just trying to help the original poster rbeyer, but if you notice he/she hasen't responded latley so maybe they got it figured out anyway ;-) So you just keep on helping out whever you can :-)

Cheers
