I own both the earlier Region 1 of this film, and also the one which was just recently released (the 2 disc Special Edition, I think it was called). And, I had no problems at all backing them up.
On the earlier one, I used DVDShrink (although I am certain that DVDDecrypter would have worked fine, as well, to rip.)
On the more recent one, I decided to splurge and did a dual layer backup. Thus, I used DVDDecrypter. If I had chosen to try to compress the discs, I could have used DVDShrink, again.
I am confused about a few things, based on your original post.

Midway, through the rip? Or, midway through the burn? You write that you were burning with Clone DVD and Nero. Does this mean that your rip was already successful?
So, is this midway through a RIP or midway through a BURN?

Does this mean you tried to use DVDShrink to rip from the disc, or that you used it to try to compress the ripped version (from a hard drive) that you had already ripped using DVDDecrypter?
With little information to go on, I can only guess why you might be having problems. Right now, though, I suspect a dirty disc, or a scratched disc, or one with smudges, etc. Have you tried to clean it?
Can you perhaps post the exact error messages you are getting, with clear delineation of methods tried?
Have you tried just using DVDShrink to rip it, with nothing else running? Did this work?
Have you tried using just DVDDecrypter to rip it, with nothing else running? Did this work?
This is just a regular Warner Bros. DVD. It is not a Sony or Columbia or Tristar, it does not have ArCCos copy protection or anything special on it.
