I am a new user of DVD Shrink and am well pleased with what it can do. I have made several backups and been amazed at the results. Then things started to go wrong. Suddenly the DVDs I had backup up started giving problems during playback on my computer. I started getting freezing during playback with Power DVD or it didn't even start because of "disc not recognized or not inserted". Shortly after I had made these DVDs they did play fine on Power DVD. Another thing is that I can?t backup the backup DVDs again using DVD Shrink because a cyclic redundancy error results somewhere during analysis.

What makes this even more puzzling is that these same DVDs used to work on my computer and now don't, and still do work on my cheapo standalone DVD player with my TV.

After reading some comments on this forum I thought it may be because I am using cheap DVD media (Mr DVD from Poundland). But this doesn't explain why they initially did work on my computer and still work on my standalone DVD player. Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, I think it is the cause of your problems. Cheap media degrades with time. Your "cheap" DVD player is less sensitive to this (so far) than your computer DVD.

bilbo65 is correct cheap media will give you a lot of problems and you will get the CRC errors when trying to backup a backup. Just remember to keep your burning speed down to 4x this will give you less chance of errors and set your target to 4300 or 4334 so you do not burn too close to the edge.

Thanks. You are probably right about the cheap DVDs. Though what is still puzzling is that they do seem to have degraded in the two weeks since I got them and made the backups and they were probably sitting in the shop for a lot longer and manufactured even further back in time. But nothing else explains what has been happening. So, no more cheap media and hope that solves the problems. I will also try arniebears suggestions when using up the stack of cheap media I still have left.
