may i ask what is the media ID coding on these discs? i have never used them before so i will not comment just yet...but, if you want GOOD quality media..my PERSONAL recommendation would be genuine Taiyo Yuden media and the DVD+R format Verbatims~ :) check my sig. for suggestions...

if you are willing to purchase online, 4x Taiyo Yuden is very good price...you might even get lucky and get the TYG02s (8x dvd-r) for the price of TYG01s (4x dvd-r) :) many people have gotten lucky, i for one WISH i were that lucky, but i can't complain...4x DVD-R TY discs i have are great for the price~ :) i got mine at www.supermediastore.com, i believe they are around $32/100 right now. about the same price for your OSI ones, but better quality~

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

I've never heard of them.

Here's a free handy tool to download to check for the manufacturers ID code: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...

Let us know what the mfg code is. Just select drive and click identify. It will then show-for example:
Manufacturers name: Taiyo yuden
Manufacturers ID: Yuden
Media type ID: T02

This example would make Yuden000-T02 as the mfg code. These were just purchased today at staples. They are the fuji +8x,spindles of 30 for $9.94.
Last weeks bargain was Office depot brand 8x in 100 pack spindles for $28. These are ritek-r03.I keep track of local on sale good quality media.

not a good sign if you two haven't heard of them; i know i haven't so would be lying if i said i hadn't mentally put these in the "avoid as they're crap" category.

This is neat, I bought the same OSI DVD-R 8X 50packs for $17CAD with tax. Never heard of the brand before and just curious to test them out since they are so cheap.

I scanned one with DVD Identifier and the result is:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:TYG02]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd.]
Manufacturer ID : [TYG02]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

TYG02?? That doesn't sound so bad does it? 50 pieces for $17CAD+tax. So don't be so quick with your words and judgements. But could it be a fake though? Can DVD identifier be fool somehow by some smart DVD producer?

Oh by the way, forgot to mention, can bad DVD degrade the life span of our DVD writer? Cus I got Memorex 25pack once and got 2 coasters out of them. Just wondering if they can ruin the DVD laser head everytime they screw up writing properly.

Thanks all.

kshark, that MID code can be counterfeited.

Look at the dye side of the disc.In the purple dye, near the hub you'll see a code. It'll be like Tgxxxxxx or something like that.Just post us the 2 letters along with the 6 digits of that code.I'm not sure if that can be faked.

Poor media bad on writer lasers?

Usually the coaster rate and the playback on stand alones are the usual casualties of poor media. Once in a while you'll hear of someone whose disc explodes in their drive.
It shouldn't hurt the laser, unless the exploding disc occurs, LOL,then more than just the laser will be damaged.

Just keep all the discs nice and clean.

those MIGHT be fake, but, as saugmon requested, look on the inner hub and I will tell you if they are fake or not...for TYG02s, it should be more along the lines of GG000xxx (where xxx is the batch number, it could be GG001234- as an example where the batch number would be 1234, meaning it's a more recent product)

let us know...bad media 99% of the time WILL NOT AFFECT the longevity of the burner/laser itself, but, to produce coasters on bad media is a problem in and of itself, no need to worry about how your burner is taking it hehe :) it's YOU that is going to be disappointed and mad for wasting money on bad media and now you have yourself a shiny coaster rather than a perfect backup :P

Thanks for the help saugmon and kivory666.
I took at look at the writing on the dye side of the disc near the stacking ring (is that what you mean by near the hub, saugmon?) and to my disappointment it's IFPI CY22 :( Darn, fake I suppose. Hehe, nowadays anything can be counterfeited.

Another question about bad disc. Assuming I get one sucessfully burnt, would it last long if I keep it clean and scratchless? Or is there other adverse effects it might have other than exploding during playback?

BTW, can a disc really explode during playback due to poor quality of the disc itself? It's a really high rpm to get a disc up to the speed of explosion.

Thanks for all the advise again. I got much to learn from you guys :)

PS: I found the disc specs for this OSI DVD-R I bought.

@kshark -

looks like the guys found more FAKE TY media there. which is good for us as it's more info for us to help future posters with their supposed TY purchases. i 'spose the good thing is you only got stung for $17, could have been a lot worse (it usually is), last few days a guy got tempted by an eBay 'deal' of 400 'TY' - they were fake of course, but he'd bid on them THEN come here asking for advice. luckily he got out of the bud. phew!

I'm glad you didn't pay too much for those fake tys. I'm not sure who made them, but maybe they'll be ok for data.

Exploding discs, I've seen it on a show called mythbusters and someone here about a month ago had it happen to them.I'm not sure if media quality is the culprit though, but anthing can happen with cheap/crappy manufacturers.

Longevity of your discs,It is reported that the lower quality/crappy dvd media is breaking down quicker.Sometimes less than 6 months.

to creaky:
phew, thank god it's only $17. I burnt one so far, but everything looks fine during the burn and after the burn, hopefully same for the other 49 discs to come.

to saugmon:
I think we watched the same show :P Mythbuster maybe even the same myth that disc can blow up inside regular disc reader or writer, but the myth is broken. Regular reader or writer can't get disc spinning at the rpm required to make the plastic shatter. They got to use a industrial high speed motor to achieve the explosion effect. From my memory, the explosion was so powerful that the plastics chipped into protective thick container (looks like bullet-proof glass) and bring down the camera beside it.

I just hope my disc won't have a short life, I don't care now if some of them are coasters since I know they suck, but dying on me in less than a year is sad :(

Thanks guys :) your advises are wonderful.

no worries.

ps i have seen a disc explode, admittedly it wasn't a blank one, but a Windows NT4 install disc or something. the bang as it shattered scared the whole office. disc probably had a crack in it beforehand or something

Wow, crazy stuff. The pieces actually fly out the "box"? Then the poor ROM reading it must be busted. I hope no one was injured cus after seeing the clip in the show, I think it would be painful to get anywhere close to the explosion site.
