I have noticed some of the same issues with other users that I too am experiencing. I'm usually able to get the disk ripped, but when it comes to burning it, I just make coasters. BUT not every movie. Son of the Mask burned fine on the fly out of shrink, but then fails to do additonal copies when I run Nero (Stand alone) Papparazzi did the same thing. It took ne three days to find the right combination to do Hitch, and when it burnt first it was fine, subsequent tries are doing the same thing. I'm getting the impression that maybe my drive is on it's way out. Any suggestions? (I run a stand alone system, no network connection, and scanned frequently using a variety of antivirus and spyware prgms.) TIA

whoa let's take one title at a time i'm getting information overload I get that you are making one successful copy then nothing hmmm new to me
let's see. are you taking the same exact steps the second time around that you did the successful time. If you could, please let us in on these steps as this might be helpful. are you getiing error's during rip, compress,or burn,or are you getting successful burns that won't play in your stand-alone if your getting errors please let us in on them as this also could help out. if you can get us a burn log also very helpful. but before all that please make sure that you are using quality media. as this is the number one producer of coasters. not to be rude but I would love to help you out or at least see it get worked out 4 you. but help us to help u

On the fly copying will always increase the chance of bad or faulty burns.

My preferred method is to rip to hard drive, compress or reauthor if necessary and then burn from hard drive.

Good quality media is important and it is recommended not to burn any faster than 4X

Never have had a problem with on the fly encoding on a rip. Ether your media is the problem or your doing somthing on your computer when its burning. Remember don't touch the computer when its burning.

If I understand your problem its riping on and playable on your comp? Just get bad burns?

Use Verbatim

Thanks for replying, well...what I meant as to 'on the fly' was that I let shrink start Nero automatically after ripping. Occasionally, the burn would fail, and usually very close to completion. On actually burned the movie to the credits and that is where the burn ended. I had originally thought I may have inadvertently done something on the computer while it was burning and screwed up the burn. Mostly if I let DVD Shrink run it's course, it works. If I go back into the hard drive and try and make an additional back-up from the stored files, it fails. Sometimes the failure is immediate and sometimes the failure is further into the burn. One error that I did note I was recieving was a data read error. I was thinking at this point that shrink was able to rip the disk, but some of the protection went along with it. The reason for this thought came from running AnyDVD while trying to burn the same files again and it went through succesfully. I have the same trouble with the odd audio CD thatt I burn with the same Nero program.

Try running a defrag on your computer, close down any programs that are running in the background and no multi-tasking while burning and use good media. If you are having problems at the end of the disk then try not burning so close the the edge, set your target size in Shrink at 4300, and see if this makes a difference. Here is some info on read errors in Shrink

Rgr - would still like to know what brand/s of media you are burning to - good quality media such as Ritek, Verbatim, TY recommended.

What speed are you burning at?

Are you using labels on your burnt DVDs?

@colw

Thanks for adding the burn speed, I got the early morning blahs and forgot about it.

@venom8

Keeping your speed down to 4x, will aid in less errors especially if you are using cheaper media. In Shrink when you hit your backup button look for burn settings and set it to 4x.

I'm using Maxell disks, and I burn at 4X. I'll try the defrag and see what that gets me. I'm not running anything in the background. I believe the issue actually started when I ripped hitch. It seems tat since then I've gotten these problems. Maybe just a coincidence, but in case the info helps.
Thanks

I started out using xcopy platinumfor a long time and got a lot of failed burns. It did seem that certain media worked better than others. Then later on I began using DVD Shrink and Nero. I now could backup to my hard drive, which works great, then burn in Nero. But I was still getting alot of failed burns in Nero. I had recently been using TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 to edit home movies recorded on my ILO standalone recorder. the DVD writing tool built in never failed to burn one of my videos. So I decided to try using it to burn my backup movies. I have now burned more than 50 movies without one single problem. Huh? Why does it work so well when Nero doesn't?

I now rip to HD with shrink or DVD fab decrypter and burn with TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 and so far 4 brands of discs and no problems.
Except for certain movies that are difficult to rip.

I do know for sure that media quality does make a difference but there has to be more to it.

Hope this helps somehow. CK

post your Nero log on one of the failed burns like I said b-4 let's just handle one title at a time (btw stand-alone usually reffers to a set-top player the dvd player hooked up to the t.v.) any way's that Nero log will provide a lot of information this will cut out a big portion of the q&a session that seems enevitable in this thread. also I use also these maxell dvd-r's they work great 4 my set-up. DVD Decrypter is free and still the king so let's try and get that up and running because this will provide a log and a very good assumption that the ripping process is not where the problem lies try it out if you get the chance. first thing get the Nero burning log and will shall commence the operation.

Just finished attempting to copy Paparazzi from the HDD. When I first ripped it with Shrink it went right to the end, full burn, no problems. In fact I did Man of the House today without a probelm with Shrink. Here is the log file that Nero put out for Paparazzi: (I hope posting it doesn't cause a problem. If so please advise the correct way,, Thank-You)

I'm pretty sure this could be part of the problem I have read of several dma setting's being turned off by xp they thought they're drive was spent to but forgive my ignorance of the matter not personally dealt w/this prob yet, knock on wood!

Your firmware is out of date current is 1.0C. Scroll down until you find your burner and download the new firmware.

Thanks for the tip on the firmware. I thought I had done that a while back. As for the l8nights reply, the correct media is what is shown. I use DVD+R's to copy with. Never had an issue with that. The only media issues I ever came across with the TDK were certain brands won't work. I'll try the firmware update. The DMA issue is something else, I too noticed that but am unable to change it. Is there a possible registry edit that would force this?
Thanks

the log should have been showing the media's m.i.d. after you get the firmware update pay att. to that part of the log and see if it is followed by the correct manuf and speed capabilities. good luck.

You have to watch TDK some 4x and 8x +R's are coded CMC Mag and this is not a reliable mfr, as you will see from other posts.

Ok i'll check the log out. The irony of the situation is, that this issue just seem to pop up. I've lost count of the anount of copies the machine has made 'til it started acting up. And to beat it all to heck, I just checked the setting for the one drive that always seem to be locked into PIO mode and it now has gone to DMA. You would think that I had a bunch of kids surfing the net blindly with all the idiosyncrasies that seem to occur. Yet the system sits by itself, not network attachment, (Unless I need to do software updates) and it hasn't been plugged into a connection for at least two months due to time restraints. I just finished a clean burn of Ice Princess, no problems. I am though, using my root drive and not the secondary (Just to see if this is where the issue may be. Thanks for all the input, you have enabled me to see some of what I was missing. I'll post when I have additional details to any of the issue I'm having.

Thanks Again, great site!
