Here's the situation, I am considering buying either an Xbox or Playstation 2 for my kids(so that I can get them off my computers :)

1. I'd like to softmod whichever system I buy. I've read the threads about softmodding an Xbox and it seems pretty straight forward and easy. Is the same type of mod possible on a Playstation 2? or do I have to get a hardware mod for Playstation 2.

2. I know there are a bunch of emulators out there for both PS2 and Xbox so that these machines can play older systems games. Do both systems have the same emulators out there? meaning can both PS2 and Xbox play the same older system games?

3. Which game system has a more active internet community for help, support etc.?

4. Which one has a larger library of games for younger kids?

Any other useful information that would help me decide which system to get would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know anything about modding, i'd rather play the game the way it was meant to be played.
BUT
3) you'll find all the help you need online for either system. There're enough people out there that will answer just about any question you can have.
4) If you're really looking for something for younger kids, Gamecube has the most FUN games, and have a larger library that can be played by younger kids. All systems have adult-themed and child-themed games, though. But just between the XBOX/PS2, I'm betting you'll more likely find games that are... MORE suitable for younger kids, that are more popular. i.e. buy 'em a ps2 and they'll want GTA: San Andreas (adult only), buy 'em an xbox, they'll want halo (rated teen, or so)

(get the xbox. the only reason i'm on the ps2 forums at all is because my ps2 has tons of hardware issues-- definitely crappy hardware)
