I used to have a sony single-layer burner, but it died on me. Recently bought a new, Emprex dual-layer burner from Fry's outpost.com website, dvd+r.
Have DVDXCopy Platinum, which I use for burning dual-layer into single layer, and a DVDEcho package, which has dvddecrypter version 3.1.4.
Anyway, here is my problem.
I tried to use the DVDDecrypter to read and then write the iso files, but it gave me a disc that wont play on my computer or in a standard dvd player. Was using Verbatim 8.5 discs.
My goal is to be able to quickly copy some dual layer discs that I own into some other dual-layer discs. Is there something I am doing wrong as far as dvddecrypter, or perhaps i just bought a crappy burner?

I found the updated version, and installed it, trying my first burn now. The newer version is much easier to use than the old one.
1. What is booktyping?
2. How long does it normally take to finalise a disc?

Ok, just finished my second test burn.
1. Stayed in "finalizing" mode for about 7 minutes before I finally just manually shut down the process.
2. The disc had some kind of funky scratch marks on it (the first one did not).
3. Dvd did not work.
4. I am not sure what to do, or what the problem is. help? Again, to recap:
Using Emprex 1018 burner, firmware version (according to decrypter) is A082. I am using Verbatim Dual layer discs DVD+R DL.
Attempting to backup "Constantine" as a test.
My goal is to backup dual-layer dvds onto other dual layer dvds (not intersted in dual-to-single compression).

Here's what I found for f/w for an Emprex 1018IM http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1774 It doesn't look like it is capable of bitsetting.
Will the backups play on the dvdrw you burned them on?
Although you mentioned that you are not interested in compressing a DVD9 to a DVD5, are you aware that most compression proggys allow you to remove unwanted soundtracks, subtitles, and copy movie only thus greatly reducing the amount of compression required. One very popular and free proggy is DVD Shrink. Personally I use DVD-RB/CCE (the best encoder under $2000). I edit out the junk I don't want with dvdremake leaving a folder around 6500 and 7000 mb then encode with RB/CCE and burn with Nero. I can't tell any loss in video quality between the original and my backup on my 52" HDTV.
You may need to use DVD-R media to be compatable with your stand-alone dvd player since your dvdrw is not capable of bitsetting.
Can you post a log of your last burn?

I will have to copy the log from the next burn I try.
Problem is that my reason for making dual-layer copies is that i have several dual-layer discs for tv shows, anime, etc, and it is stuff that if I try to compress to single layer, I am compressing 7+ gigs into 4.7. Most dual-layer movies I can compress easily from about 5.5-6 gigs down to 4.7 without any loss of quality.
Problem is large amounts of data, and I am trying to avoid re-authoring.
I will try one more burn from this emprex, and I am going to manually lower the speed to 2x. I will post the log from that after its done. I am also going to try a dvdxcopy single-layer burn on some TDK media, to see if I can actually get one of those to work. If I cant get this stuff to work, I will probably return this emprex, and just bite the big one and buy a sony DRU-720

I compress 7+ gb all the time with rb/cce and notice no loss of video quality. I can't say the same for any other transcoder/encoder software. The sony would IMO be a better choice. It is capable of bitsetting along with benq, lite-on, LG, plextor, and ricoh.

Ok, I updated my firmware, and was able to burn a dual-layer to single-layer using dvdxcopy, but...
The burned dvd only plays on computers, wont play on any of the dvd players in my house.
There is a bit-setting utility available through the company's tech support website, www.drvupdate.com, but it doesnt give me an ability to alter the bit-setting, so I am beginning to think that this burner is just a POS.
