It's my birthday in a month, so I'm thinking of getting a mod chipped PS2.

The one I am thinking of has a Matrix Infinity SE chip, and the guy said he will give me a version of NERO that works fine backing up ps2 games.

What is that chip like? Will it back up newer games? Should I be looking for something else?

The Matrix Infinity and the DMS 4 & DMS Lite are the best chips out there right now. Nero works pretty good but i suggest you get a free program here in the software section called DVD Decrypter also. It works great for games.
And DVD Shrink is also free and works great for movies.
I do all my games on Philips 8X DVD-R and movies on DVD+R
(same brand & speed)
Other good media TDK, Verbatim, Ritek G04

If you don't mind me asking how much is he charging?
Is the PS2 a Slim or one of the older chunky style?
And i would suggest getting him to put in a laser fix also like the Summone laser fix.
I know places that have them premodded with any of the above chips plus laser fix for about $265 + shipping so make sure he isn't charging you more than that for the system, chip, install and laser fix.

It's $399 postage included, for a PS2 slim, with the matrix infinty SE chip and 10 free games.

I'm going to buy some good DVDs soon. I'm on my last 4 or so of my crappy cheap brand ones, and have only found out after reading these forums that DVD quality is a huge factor.

I'll find out about the laser fix aswell.

(Edit: Those prices are in AU$)
