Bought a spindle of the MIJ Maxell's on sale at Office Depot....what a bunch of junk those are. Coded out to MAXELL002. PI Failures are outrageous with totals of ~6000 and spikes and blocks of 45!!! These are going right back to ODP. I will no longer stray from my TY discs!!!!

individual user experiences vary...but, glad you decided to stay aboard my TY bandwagon~ :) you might have just gotten a bad batch, but, what a hassle it is to drive back and return them no? :)
sorry you had to go through such trouble...at least for me personally, i have YET to have to such a regrettable experience when i purchase and use genuine Taiyo Yuden~ :)

Interesting discussion, I bought Maxell R+ at the Future Shop in packs of 20 in their jewel cases Ricohjpn and they are doing fine on my BenQ whose support recommends Maxell and I got a very good price on them.
Not one coaster out of 50 backups done.
I have a good supply and am happy.
Cheers!

I agree with kivory on the bad batch of maxells. Office depot will take them back, make sure you save the outer shrink-wrapper. I've bought over 400+ maxells from them.A while back,a member recieved some maxell -4x yellowtops in the mail that were white and didn't have any dye in them, LOL
Appa,The only media I found that my benq's didn't like was verbatim digital movie quality -4x. Other than those,it'll burn anything you slap in them. I've burned a slew of ricoh's.The maxell +8x riteks and hitachi's are also sweet. If you get a chance, try the verbatim data life plus +8x,sony +1x-8x,and fuji +8x.
Those sony and fuji's can be burned at 16x in both my benqs. The japanese ones are made by taiyo yuden.

Could be a bad batch...I haven't seen anyone else with reviews(including PIE/PIF scans) so it's hard to say. I'll gladly bring them back as I work less than a mile from the store....tons of media choices where I am with Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples, Office Depot, all within a mile or 2....like I said before....I'm sticking with TY's!!!
saugmon-have you ran disc quality on any Maxells with the MAXELL002 code...not the MXLXXXX coding?

Thankyou Saugmon for the suggestions. Being a Noob, it is always great to hear from experienced users and as I try to grow a little in knowledge by participating in forums such as this one it really makes an individual anxious to learn as much as possible.
I know that media is very important and the folks at BenQ were so cooperative in explaining why that I was very fortunate to get off to a good start.
I am learning by trial and error and have bought a small pack of Sony RW+ to practice with and am doing different backups simply trying to get the hang of it.
I especially like to read about Media types and this forum is indeed great for that.
I get the general impression that media made in Japan is of better quality and using the dvd identifier I try to keep track of what I buy.
Up here in Canada I have found that it is difficult to find R+ made in Japan and so I have kept on with Maxell, however I will now be on the look it.
Thankyou for the comments.

Appa, I noticed media quality a year before I started burning dvd's on my pc and I haven't found these AD forums. My tv recorder-cyberhome- had a hell of a time with memorex. That's why I stick with the plus format,so I can try different media in that recorder and pc. I've burned a lot of stuff, even cmags with very little problems on my benq. That cyberhome had trouble with them and the ricohs. That baby sure loves those verbs dlp +8x,and so do my benqs.
Here's some of the media I have used, and I rate it for my benq's at a 4x burn speed and no multi-tasking:
Verbatim Data Life plus +8x: Mcc-003
Sony +1x-8x-Yuden000-T02
Fuji +8x: Yuden000-T02
Taiyo Yuden-g02
Sony -1x-8x:Sony8D1
Maxell +8x: Maxell-002-00- Hitachi/Ritek R03
All those performed super, and I couldn't tell which was any better than the others.99%+success rate!
All these were very good,at a 95% success rate:
Ricohjpn-01- Maxell +4x,verbatim data life +4x,sony +4x
Sony +1x-8x: SonyD11
Maxell: Mxl-rg02 and Mxl-rg03- I had one that separated!
Verbatim +4x digital movie quality: Mcc-002
The worse of what I have burned:
Sony dash 1x-4x and dash 4x- Sony04d1
Verbatim dash digital movie quality:Mcc-01RG20- 1 out of 2 coasters.
Cmags from teon and phillips in the plus format-Lots of playback issues even at a 2.4x burn!.

When ahead and watched my backup w/ 6000+ PI Failures. It plays fine. No glitches/ skips/ etc....Could it be my drive not liking the media. Sony DRU-710. Any ideas???

wow that stinks, I always know Maxell to be some of the best media. But with prices dropping so low on media it probably affected their quality too. That does stink.

akyllonen,
Are those maxells +r or -r? The reason I ask, Your sony is a rebadged lite-on SOHW-1633S/1653S and is capable of booktyping dvd+r media to dvd-rom useing dvd decrypter, nero, or the lite-on booktype utility.
Also have you checked to make sure your f/w is current. That can make a ton of difference on these drives. BYX4 is the most current f/w for your drive. If you continue to have problems an eeprom reset may be in order. My litey SOHW-1633S didn't like verbatum (MCCOO3) at all when I first started useing them but after a crossflash to SOHW-1653S f/w and an eeprom reset, it burns them better than any other media I've tried.

They are +R's (MIJ). I'll try a firmware update and burn another one to see the difference. I don't want to use too many though...as I want the return to go smooth...

If are burning those Maxell 002 on a Sony 710 burner even with the lastest firmware it won't support those discs. They are great with NEC burners or LG burners.

I'm glad they were free,50% burn and 50% toast.
I only use Sony1x-8x,TY's and VDL+
