I follow just about every guide for burning a movie and I get the same result every time in the movie there is always a part that freezes or it skips. I burn with external Sony burner VRD-VC10. I turn off all my applications and I used every type of media and nothing seems to stop the problem can some one help me out?

Sounds like the source disc is dirty or scratched. Check it. If it's dirty, clean it. If it's scratched, you can purchase something like SkipDr to repair it. You can find it or something like it in most retail stores at a nominal price. Happy burning!

I'm not sure from your post if you're having trouble with one specific movie or just in general you're getting bad results with any movie. If it's just one movie then it may be the DVD itself is defective.
Otherwise, if it's in general, I'd first play the ripped files off my hard drive to see if the bad spot in the movie also shows up there. Then at least you'll know at what stage in the process things are going wrong.
If the ripped files play well on your hard drive but after burning they don't play well in your stand alone DVD player I would first try the burned disc in another stand alone DVD player (or play it from your DVD drive) just to be sure your DVD player isn't just having a hard time with +R or -R discs, whatever you are using.
Also, I'd burn at the slowest speed my burner would allow. I'll often times drop to 2x to get better results on a problem movie. Try using DVD Shrink with Deep Analysis, and use the Smooth Quality setting.
Make sure you are not using too much compression as well. Different people have different preferences but I try to keep the compression above 85% or so.
Good Luck.

What speed are you burning at? Does the backup play ok on the dvive that burned it? Try playing them in some other stand-alone dvd players. Your player may be extra finicky.

mort is right but I also think that moonrocks is on the right track, too. You may be burning at too high a speed. Your disk media sounds fine... they are quality disks, but you haven't mentioned what programs you are using, what movies your are trying to backup and what speed you are burning! with more info we can process your answers better!

I am using DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink and Nero 6. I am burning them at 5.1. I rather not say what movies (do not want to get in trouble with the forum) just some have copy protection and some do not.

But it does sound like a media problem...... but you are burning with some good media...... are you using DVD-Rs or DVD+Rs?

I used both DVD-R and DVD+R. Some of the movie I download is ok and it runs fine but other parts do not. I tried the Sony website for updates with the firmware for my burner but there is none.

Oh these are downloads instead of backups of originals. The downloads probably have some corrupt files. Will they play ok from your hdd on your pc?

Open shrink, click on edit then preferances, under target dvd size select custom in the dropdown menu then type in 4350. Click ok. Give that a try. Keep burn speed to 4x or under.

all i'll add is i only ever set to 4300MB for even top notch discs, and recommend the same to all. I never recommend burning to the outer edge to anybody, not even myself...

Rosko26. This is my first post to this forum, but this is only because I've been able to solve the zillion problems I've had burning by searching through posts on this web site. I had the exact same problem you had for a few reasons: cheap media, burn speed, burning to close to the edge of a dvd, and my stand alone dvd player which has problems with certain brands of +R and -R media. I discovered this by playing my skipping dvds in another DVD player without any problems. I solved this final problem by ensuring that I set all my burns to booktype: DVD ROM. Now my sensitive DVD player has no problems with my burns.
Thanks to everyone for all the excellent information on this website. I would have given up burning a long time ago if this site didn't exist.

chaz,
Not all dvdrw drives are capable of bitsetting (booktyping +r/rw media to dvd-rom). What brand of dvdrw do you have?
