I realise that this has discussed before but that was a while ago.

As of today... I chiped my first GC with the VIPER GC yesterday.Everything went fine until the iso's didn't want to play on my GC.I am using RIDATA DVD-R 4x and a DRE appears at boot.Anyway,

WHAT MEDIA IS BETTER TO BACKUP *COUGH* YOUR GAMES? Mini-DVDs? DVDs?
- or+?. I know one is cheaper than the other but I want to get the less errors possible.

I'm using a Qoob SX. I got alot of DRE errors on some cheapo printable DVDs that I already had. I read somewhere on the media comparison chart that TDK was rated very good. I bought a 50 pack of full size TDK DVD-R 8X discs and haven't had one DRE error yet burning them at 4X speed. I am a believer in TDKs now. :)

Umm I have been using dvd+r for about 1 week now, I have disk 1 of Tales of SYmphany, super smash bros. melee, prince of persia and maria sunshine. All ripped and burned myself. I think it really depends of the method your using of burning it.I have never had a DRE on GC games or Ps2. Using nero would be the best.

Haha I forgot to actually give an answer to your question. I know of two very good disks for burning, Ritek g04's and tdk disks. I'm cheap so I use Fujifilm DvD+R's.

Normal DVDs. I bought a modified case to allow the Gamecube to accept full size discs. I was planning on just using mini, but they are more expensive.

Do you have less chances to get DREs on normal DVDs than mini-dvds?

I don't think it makes a difference if its mini or full size, I believe it just all comes down to the maker of the media and the quality of the media.

Yes, those work fine. I bought a 50 pack of those exact Riteks only two days ago. Before I used Sony DVD-Rs but they would only boot sporadically (only after hitting the power button 4-6 times). Now they all work perfectly. I wonder what it is about Riteks that are so much more reliable over other DVD-Rs? The purple dye? (which is much darker on Ritek than on Maxell, Memorex or Sony)

I Believe DRE comes from bad rips, not the media you use to record it. I use DVD+R that cost me 59 cents a disk... how good do you think those could be eh? Yet for me I've never once got a messed up game. Also I would say the burner and your burning application. I say pick up a pioneer dvd burner from 100+ bucks those are good and Nero burning rom.

K one more thing, i actually got my sony dvd-r's to work, but liek 5 minutes after playing it freezes and says error reading disc, so is that because i set my lazer to low? or cause the dvd-r's are crap, guessing it might jsut be the DVD-R thing and i should just go to sony dvd+r's? or riteks?

Well i need no help, but to others who use the adapter booting like me and boots the GCOSv 1.4 for booting backups, for me i turned my lazer up a big in ohms and now my sony dvd-r's work perfect, so i think i have succesfully got my gamecube working perfect.

Well just for the record, even though you managed to get your games to work, I was going to say just restart the game, update your bios if your using Qoob, 1.3c is out and it fixes media issues and reduced DRE's and for those foreign or PAL games chnge your video setting. Helps me out. I never have tweaked the lazer.

I have used 2x and 8x TDK DVD-R like stevetex (I only burn at 1x or 2x). I haven't used them on Gamecube yet (my modchip is in the mail), but they have worked flawlessly for the 15 PS2 burns.

The 8x TDK DVD-R are on sale at Circuit City right now, they sell 25-pack for $9.99 (the label in my store says this is up until 8/23).
fyi, CC's 50-packs are not on sale and are 39.99.

To compare, I used Ritek Ridata for PS2 game too, and got 2 bad burns out of 10 on my Pioneer burner. Other people seem to have had better results than me though.
