Here is the long story short:

-I bought my ps2 some years ago, first game: NBA Live 2001.

-I let my cousin borrow my ps2.

-After a while he said it stopped working, getting DREs.

-He told me it could be a weak laser problem.

-I Researched it, read about it... Sony Sucks.

-The ps2 sat at his house for like a 1 year.

-I finallypicked it up.

-It's a v4.

-It wasnt reading any games, whether DVD(silver) or CD(blue.)

-Called Sony, they were not helpful. I kept saying DRE DRE DRE.. but I think they stopped free repairs some time ago. Although I asked for a supervisor and mentioned laser errors and he said it was internet bullshit... they are real fucks not admitting their mistakes.

-I suspected I had the laser problem and that sony were being bastards... and I mentioned before lol.

-I opened it up and blasted the shit out of it with compressed air, especially the laser lens.

-I noticed some really small specks on the lower part of the lens, the lens is like 2 things, a dome and a flat part which the dome lies on right? Well i think there were really small specks on the flat part... just an observance.

-Well after that it started reading DVD games properly. YAY!
It did not read CD games... EVIL NOISES + DRE.

-Tried a day later... will read DVDs... 30-70 in reading NBA LIVE 2001 (CD BLUE) with very little noise, just a slight whirrrr. It makes EVIl noises and gets DRE with Contra Shattered Soldier (CD BLUE).

-So I was really surprised when it started reading DVDs after cleaning. I thought weak laser + dust made it not read anything and now it could read DVDs because uhh... silver is a nicer color than dark blue ;-).

-Was even more surprised when it started reading NBA Live 2001 the next day... I thought the little knocks I gave it while it was reading the disc actualyl did something.

-Wasnt surprised when it stopped reading NBA Live 2001, because it was nt reading Contra Shattered Soldier anyway.

-So.... my plan before I opened it up and cleaned it was to get a DMS4 modchip, prolly solderless, and replace the laser.

-But now I am not completely sure if the laser is weak, although I am really leaning towards that direction.

-After reading the the first thread, it said to check if it reads DVD-Rs... but question: Will it read it anyway if I replace the laser? I mean its not worth getting a modchip if it wont read my backups.

So I am gonna test the DVD-R thing. Other than that, I am asking you guys for your thoughts on what my problem might be. I think replacing laser will fix it.. and then I can continue with my mods. But the really odd behavior it is displaying makes me doubt.

Summary: reads DVD games, mostly does not read CDs... makes EVIL NOISES.... V4..uhhhhh....weak laser? thoughts?

SO nobody is familiar with the problem...? Maybe I am the only one who cannot read CDs but can read DVDs... that would be funny.

Ohyeah, I hear that v4 ps2s cannot read Dual layer... so will replacing the laser change that? This problem is along the lines of the other one, reading dvd-rs... will replacing the laser change any of that.

I am sorry to triple post

Seriously, any thought that you may have would be much obliged. I find this to be an odd problem compared to the regular ones I have read about. Again, any thoughts would be much obliged.

I have cleaned it with compressed air, I dont really want to touch it. I have heard of ppl cleaning + adjusting, but after a while the just need to get a new laser. I think I should do that now. But, will that one just die later? I wonder if it is worth it.
