Hello,

I've recently purchased Imation DVD-R 4x at officemax. They are blowing out the 4x media at $6 for a cakebox of 25!

What are your experiences using this media? Do you burn on a computer or DVD Recorder?

I've tried a couple and they seem nice. AZO Dye.

I've read some are CMC Magnetic and Some MCC.

Overall, how do these stand out with you.

On VideoHelp.com 14 reviewers have good ratings even on the CMC's.

Let me know...

Thanks

Greg

GregRod -

look thru 1st page of this for my own experience with a few types of that appalling media (Imation) over a year or 2 period - ..Memorex/CMC - don't let them near your Burner..... - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/195438

Imation is not highly regarded, if regarded at all.
Here's where i summarised some MCC/CMC stuff last night for somebody - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/216718.
It seems some of my highly regads Verbatims are being made by the scourge of disc technology CMC. I find it very hard to recommend or discuss media now, the market is being overrun by crap manufacturers. I've been proud of my Verbs while watching/replying to soooo many posts where people are afflicted by bad media and now i can see that happening with MCC if CMC have got anything to do with it. Luckily i have had top results with MCC so far, regardless of where they're made, whether it be Taiwan, India and Singapore. There's more and more info coming out lately that suggests CMC are making more MCC discs than a lot of us thought..

lmao...ummm I mean the verbatim 'warlord' humbled by cmc secretly trying to move into mcc territory. I hate to say it but where the almighty dollar, pounds or wherever you reside manufacturing savings and consumer buying will drive even the highest standard holders to bend to put more in their pocket. With all the burners saturating the market and high demand its natural for companies (particularly stateside) to circumvent quality for quantity. Outsourcing, cheaper taxes are sending execs to remote places to manufacture more for less out of pocket expense to the corporation. A shame as verbatims are always available for purchase at most local pc/ media stores.

*holding on to my verbatims (verified as authentic) and wearing my 'I love taiyo yuden t-shirt :)

lol, i've been trying to make sense of the guys over at cdfreaks, it seems there are members there who hold CMC and other such landfill media in fairly high esteem. i think it's cus they PIF scan all manner of media against various burners. However we over here at afterdawn see the bad side of that coin, ie the endless posters with endless media woes. (Not saying the cdfreaks guys don't know their stuff, but those of us here that see so much traffic due to crapola media see the real side of bad media).

sorry guys, i get quite vocal about Media, it really annoys me how the quality of media/who makes it is such a big problem.

:)

I agree but faced with execs trying to save a few bucks as long as folks will purchase a 100 pk of memorex (cmc) for 59.99 (with coupon or sale of course) vs. a 50 pk of verbatim (mcc) for the same price seems that they are not worried too much by what experienced users are proving to be crap media. I read the cdfreaks forum all the time but the 1 thing I have found is only thru experience and visiting forums like AD will one have a true sense of not only good media but have the upper hand as the mistakes we all learned later on is being spoonfed to them. As far as imation goes I will not comment as I know them only for cds and i guess they needed a voice in the blank dvd media department.

Yes..

Creaky, you were the one that turned me on to verbs. I have a crapload of Digital Movie discs and they are great. They were being blown out last month at circuit city so I piled them into the cabinet.

However, this post was about Imations and not Memorex. While I understand that CMC made garbage Memorex disc's (never bought any and tell people not to buy them) I've read (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?selectmedia=686#comments) that these particular Imations are good.

If you have not used them then how can you post in terms of helping me.

7 posts and all I've read is "Get Verbs and I love my TY's". I think we all know what your stance is on Verbs and TY's. I agree the Verbs are good. I also use Maxells and TDK's.

However, my DVD Recorder uses a maximum of 4x discs. (I can upgrade to 8x but folks have reported terrible problems with their machines after the upgrade so I'm sticking to original specs. Therefore, I am buying as much good 4x discs while offered at low prices)My DVD Recorder manufacturer recomended Imations.

Please respond if you have only used these specific discs.

Greg

actually I use them quite often at work for data not video. I "borrowed" some to burn a video at home and not bad then again I'm not into experimenting to find out later they wil deteriorate in a period of 6 months or less. the 2 I took home worked ok but with all the new blank dvd media on the market I will stick with a brand I am more familiar with.

Yes i agree we got off topic but that usually happens when we are twiddling our thumbs waiting for a response.

actually if you would look at the followup posts after yours you would see the trend of cmc slowly moving into a distinct category as some media once known for having mcc coding now are manufactured by cmc.

While I am no expert i would say if they work for you then continue to use them especially at a bargain of $6 for 25. This was in no way meant to bash you but I think after being around some forums for awhile you tend to have good intentions in mind but get sidetracked. I apologize if you feel or felt we did not answer your question.

Being that imation is relatively new to the general blank dvd media world as I said earlier if they work for you then I say go for it. As time goes by if they start to fail or are praised at a high rate then and only then would anyone know they are top notch or bottomline.

No..

I wasn't feeling like you were bashing at all. Creaky seems to be very knowledgeable about the subject, its just his love for verbs and everyone elses love for TY's seems to get many questions left by the wayside. There has got to be more discs to use than Ty's and Verbs that are good. As Imation seems to be everywhere and does use AZO dye, which is not found in joe blow brands, you would think they would be decent. Yes, No?

I appreciate your responses.

Like I said, I agree with Verbs and TY's. They are very good. My Maxells I believe are TY's.

@GregRod

If these Imations work for you then that is fine, in fact post back with some scans of your burned disks as this information will help others. There have been so many people who have experienced problems with CMC Mag disks, myself included, that when members see that mfr they immediately think it is rubbish, this may not be the case. I am sure that Verbatim or Imation have their standards and do not won't to sell a bad quality product, so the disks you have may be very good. Just my opinion

@GregRod -

I myself use only a couple types of media, mostly from lack of funds and partly to being stung badly by bad media in the past (that's what got me into researching media). Anyway, what i lack in personal experience in all types/makes of media, i try to make up for in researching, ie hours of reading other people's posts, here on Afterdawn, and i try to get a broader view via cdfreaks forums/other forums/news articles/google etc.

I am by no means an expert on media, but what i do try and do, is advise on a subject as and when i can, even if it's not 100% on topic. I like to see the bigger picture, even if i do only preach Verbs, for instance, and try to impart extra info if i think it's relevant.

Sorry you feel left by the wayside, i and many others here contribute to an awful lot of threads, which is all done in our free time, so we do the best we can, even if it means bringing in a bit of info that isn't strictly 100% what was asked or not knowing everything about a subject.
I for one am in the midst of most media threads, whether i reply to them or not, i subscribe to most of them on a daily basis. Afterdawn is a huge place with 2500+ members online at any one time, we try our best :)

Got me wrong Creaky.

What I meant by "left by the wayside" was I had asked about Imation, but by the last post you guys were talking about Verbs, meaning where was the info on Imation that I had originally asked about?

Its all good. I know that this is posted in your free time. I am in no means taking shots at you. It looked like you took something personally.

Like I said, I've read your posts and I have taken your advice.

I was just wondering about these Imations. That's all.

ArnieBear, I can not do scans as I only have a DVD Recorder, but now that you mention it What do you think about the Mad Dog 6-1/NEC2500?

I noticed a few on clearance at Officemax. As I do not have a ton of cash and would like to get into scanning for quality I will need a burner. Thoughts?

Thanks...

Greg

actually gregrod you can do scans with your recorder. You can use dvdinfopro to do pif scans. At the moment i don't have a drect link as at work the website is blocked during peak hours but I'm sure someone has the link handy. Once you have finished burning your dvd put it back in your recorder and open dvdinfopro and along the top you will see pif scan. (NOTE: make sure you get the free version of dvdinfopro). Most rely on that to determine if they have a good burned dvd. I have found that even though I have a "perfectly" backup copy the scans sometimes show numerous errors. As with the imations or any other brand of dvd media alot of times its hit or miss.

http://www.dvdinfopro.com/ there you go use that link to get the program.

As far as the maddog 6 in 1 you can go to videohelp.com, do a search and read the reviews if any have been submitted.

I stand corrected I did not see a review for that particular model will try to google it and see if someone has used it

to burn or not to burn that is the question
