That is pretty slow. 4x is par for us here at AD. We can get you sped back up with a little info.

The slower burning helps on crappy media. The higher quality media can be burned successfully and great playback at 8x/12x/and even 16x.

What's the brand name/speed rate/and format of your blank media?
What's your burner model #?
What's your pc specs: Processor speed/ram/hd space?
What programs you using for the dvd backup process?
Have you defragged lately?
Do you multi-task?
Do you have any spyware/viruses on your pc? Many,Many more possibilities!

I burn great at 4x on my old p3 celeron 598 mhz,256 mbs ram,xp-home, 30 gig hd,and benq 1620 dvd burner.Analyzing and encoding are slow, but the quality is near original with no playback issues.

Some of your programs like DVD Shrink can put a toll on your processor, but you don't use much of that processor when it comes to burning your dvds.

Answer those questions. There's many of us here to help speed you up.

I've got dial-up. It's cheap and slow,But you don't need the internet to backup your dvds!

TO the replyer well I always welcome help if needed as i mite need some from time after time and true it can be the DVD-R i used but its wired i never had a problem from about 90% before just started having them as for my burner I have a toshabi I forget the model as for write now and it could be that also thats why I am buying another new burn to match the effect I will be getting as i read NEC is one of the top 10 burners on the market toshabi wasn't :( and the NEC will be muti dual layer DVD+-R etc writing at up tp 16X i will be pasting something I read as to what made me make my mine on buying this and as for media i will change from legacy 4x back to riddata 8x I would try Ver. as it seems others like it but riddata really was the best i have used so far . Here is part of the page I read as i shop from newegg mostly and no i didn't get the page from them but did get alot of reviews .According to industry experts 16X will be the end of the line for write-once DVD; pushing the drive speed faster could endanger the integrity of the disc. Last month DVD+R was first to cross that finish line. Now we have two 16X DVD-R drives on the chart: the NEC ND-3500A and the Pioneer DVR-A08XLA. A supplier of optical drives to PC manufacturers and retail drive companies in recent years, NEC is jumping back into the fray with a branded model for consumers.

In its initial outing on our chart, the $100 NEC ND-3500A earns one of our Best Buys. This model did well on all of our write tests, and it comes with a versatile software bundle. Our other Best Buy goes to the bargain-priced Lite-On SOHW-1633S, but this drive has a slower DVD-R spec than NEC's.
so as i read it says writing at top speeds are pretty bad i know i know nothing gone with ur disc but i will be safe then soryy :P and i have burn at 8X before with out problems again don't take this as a bad/ rude reply ok as I welcome help anytime as for my comp its a custom comp AMD 3200 pro with 512 memory I did have XP as the problem started with that and changed it to ME still same problem oh it does have the 9800 pro graphic's card I beleave the harddrive is the ATA version forget wich one.so if u can think of some help I will look into it and also I just tryed backing up Blade 3 and it has a error in the end of burn as did the other DVD even with droping it down to 2x write so I don't no i mite mess with it tonight thanks for replying.

You used legacy and ridata media. There's better stuff out there.I think you mentioned verbatim. The data life plus 8x in the dash and plus formats are excellent. They have the metal azo dye and are one of the top 2 or 3 on quality.

Errors on the end of your backups may be the cause of poor quality media. This poor quality media has to be burned slower. It also may have to have a smaller backup target of 4300 mbs. This reduced target size help keep the burn from reaching the outer edge of your discs. The low quality media may have uneven dye on that outer edge. Some programs like DVD Shrink can reduce that size and help out on many issues.

Your next burner: Nec 3540 is a nice quality burner for under $50 at newegg.com.Also keep in mind the benq 1620,also under $50! Both these drives have the ability to booktype dvd + media to dvd-rom making them more compatable on more stand alones. It's a very nice feature.I've got 2 benq 1620. Well over 1300+ burns on my main pc,and 300 + on my backup pc.
99% success rate and 90% compatability on the many stand alones and pc drives that play my backups.

What programs are you using in the dvd backup process? I use the free stuff, just look at my sig!

Hi guys,

Lets get a little more current on a few things. The latest litey out is the SOHW-1693S and is considered one of the best dvdrw's on the market today. Greatly improved since the first 16xx series. The latest benq is the DW1640 and is also considered one of the best out.
Neither pioneer or NEC are capable of bitsetting (NEC can with modified f/w or crossflash to maddog f/w but not pioneer). Big disadvantage in my book. Just my 2 cents.

OK back sup peeps just wanna put this up and say thanks for the info heres some also about BENQ
I've purchased a 1620 and a 1620pro, both of which are exactly the same drive when the firmware is upgraded to the latest version. The 1620 is quiet, produces good burns, and does so reasonable quickly. The Pro was slow before upgrading the firware and couldn't read some of it's own disks; after upgrading the firmware every furn fails almost immediatly. Rolling the firmware back to an older version allows burns, but they go slowly (10-12 minutes for a 16x burn, same data on the other drive in 6.5 minutes) so I'm going to have to RMA. Newegg doesn't warranty this item though, so I'e got to go through BenQ. Buyer beware. just from a buyer :) and oh fireware what does it do and why do u need to upgrade it and where would i find it :P and just to say i beleave all three seem to be great drives BENQ/lite/NEC they would all have flaws some times but its good to no many peeps buy it so u no u are getting a top drive .And as for the programs i use is DD/shrink/Nero 6 the one they have for DL here at AD :)and theres all kinds of grades for media of ridata but maybe i will try VER. one day :) and hey thanks again for the info.

Sorry to hear about your benq. I also learned that the 1620 and 1620 pro were the same drive only different f/w. I've had nothing but good results with my benq and like it a little better for burning because it is not as particular about media as my litey is. I like my litey a little better for ripping though due to it's SMART-X technology. Both my drives do an excellent job of bitsetting DVD+R media.

I noticed benq has 2 different firmwares between the bulk 1620 and the pro 1620 when I first bookmarked my firmware page at americal.com.

My first one is actually a I/O magic 16x,made by benq. The second one I have I got from newegg.com. I'm down to 20 or so sony -1x-8x left, and they will be the last dash format discs I use!

Wannadie, I've heard that having 2 of the same brand name dvd rw drives can cause issues, especially when you update the firmware.A little confusion for the pc. Just a little info I've heard.

Firewire is kind of like usb,but a little slower I believe. As far as update,I'm not sure. I've got 1 firewire port on my new pc,but nothing to hook into it.

fireware
Uh, I missed that one too, LOL

Firmware is the built in programming for the drive to perform. It's usually about the burner's manufacturers recommendation on which media mfg code it is allowed to burn, the speed, and increments of how fast to burn it. Some burners have to be updated to be able to handle the newer media that is being produced, like the 8x and 16x speeds. If that mfg code isn't listed on that firmware, you'll not be able to burn it.It probably has other things in it,but usually boils down to what media they are allowed to be burned.
Manufacturers do a lot of testing on media.Every now and then they'll add updates for burners. When I run into problems,I'll download the latest firmware from my trusted site.

Hacked firmware can make a drive: Region free/rip faster/and burn faster. These aren't highly recommended.
