Greetings,
I am a long-time Nintendo fan (I also have an Xbox) who woke up one day and decided that "I NEED A PLAYSTATION 2!" I am going to get a new slim PS2 because, despite the problems, it's very neat system. But I want to play game backups of course, just in case the new slim model tries to scratch/melt the game discs. So, I read, researched, read and researched some more...and ended up here where I have seen many of the forum posts. (plenty of great info here, thanks)
Well, (just when hope was lost) by accident on another site, I stumbled across USB Extreme. It's a great concept, playing games off of an EXTERNAL hard drive through USB. Many people thought of it (including myself) with the new slim model; but someone actually made it happen!
Sadly, some things are too good to be true and I know the theoretical max bandwidth of USB is far less than the speed of the PS2's optical drive (and the old internal hard drive.) So, without further delay...my questions:
Has anyone actually tried USB Extreme and would care to share their experience? Specifically, do games feel any slower during "load times" before and during play, and/or viewing full motion video? Has there been any skipping in FMV? Lastly, does this setup work with PS1 games as well? (the official site doesn't say)
If this turns out to be a viable solution for backups, I might jump for joy! (seriously)
In case it isn't obvious, I do not want to go spend over a hundred dollars on a new system just to lose the warranty by modding it. Forget it, I simply refuse to do so. But the day after the warranty ends, that case comes off! For cleaning of course :) Yes, I am still debating whether or not to buy an older model instead of the slim; but I am leaning towards new/slim.
Even though I have never personally owned any Playstation (1 or 2) system, I bow down (in respect) to you all as keepers of the greater magic. And I wish to join your ranks.

I must be blind, I am sorry, I missed the thread just below all about USB Extreme, I'll go read that.
